Learning times: A key factor in managerial personnel decisions

How often should a man be inducted, socialized, trained, developed, and then promoted or transferred from one department to another? The answer should depend to some extent on the average learning time for the manager's new job, and the company's feeling about a “break-even” or “pay-back” period when the employee works to “pay back” the organization for providing him with the job learning opportunity.     

Realistic Portfolio Allocation Decision-Making For The Small U.S. Retail Investor

This study introduces new domestic mixed-asset and international equity securities that allow for exact portfolio replication even by small U.S. retail investors. Using these new series, various return characteristics are examined. Finally, three sets of mean-variance analyses are conducted: a domestic equity sector-only portfolio, a domestic mixed-asset portfolio, and an international mixed-asset portfolio. Real estate warrants inclusion to varying degrees in all three portfolios. International equity inclusion was also demonstrated.     

The Influence of Confucian Ethics and Collectivism on Whistleblowing Intentions: A Study of South Korean Public Employees

The current study presents the findings of an empirical inquiry into the effects of Confucian ethics and collectivism, on individual whistleblowing intentions. Confucian Ethics and Individualism–Collectivism were measured in a questionnaire completed by 343 public officials in South Korea. This study found that Confucian ethics had significant but mixed effects on whistleblowing intentions. The affection between father and son had a negative effect on internal and external whistleblowing intentions, while the distinction between the roles of husband and wife had a positive effect on those intentions. The effects of collectivism were also different depending on the specific types of collectivism. Horizontal collectivism had a positive effect on both types of whistleblowing intentions, whereas vertical collectivism did not show any significant effects on whistleblowing intentions. These results indicate that cultural traits such as Confucian ethics and collectivism may affect an individual’s whistleblowing intentions in degree and direction, making blanket predictions about cultural effects on whistleblowing difficult.     

Aggregation for material balances

In an input-output system, let final demands and gross outputs be iteratively balanced by successive approximations. The speed of convergence will depend, among other things, on the initial choice of gross outputs. Suppose that, using some aggregation weights, aggregate supply is made equal to aggregate demand in the initial plan. The current paper finds the set of aggregation weights that yields speediest convergence. An economic interpretation of the “optimal” aggregation weights is given, and some examples are calculated. SOME TIME SERIES PROPERTIES OF CORPORATE EARNINGS IN NEW ZEALAND: A NOTE

This study examines some time series properties of earnings and returns on shareholders' equity for a sample of 110 New Zealand firms. The results show that successive changes in these time series are independent and that they can be modelled by a random walk process.

Within the last decade a vast array of computerized management information systems have become available to the hospitality industry. Their impact has not so far been significant, but where they have been introduced efficiency has increased, employees have gained greater professionalism and job satisfaction and cost effectiveness has improved.
