This paper extends previous analyses of the choice between internal and external R&D to consider the costs of internal R&D. The Heckman two-stage estimator is used to estimate the determinants of internal R&D unit cost (i.e. cost per product innovation) allowing for sample selection effects. Theory indicates that R&D unit cost will be influenced by scale issues and by the technological opportunities faced by the firm. Transaction costs encountered in research activities are allowed for and, in addition, consideration is given to issues of market structure which influence the choice of R&D mode without affecting the unit cost of internal or external R&D. The model is tested on data from a sample of over 500 UK manufacturing plants which have engaged in product innovation. The key determinants of R&D mode are the scale of plant and R&D input, and market structure conditions. In terms of the R&D cost equation, scale factors are again important and have a non-linear relationship with R&D unit cost. Specificities in physical and human capital also affect unit cost, but have no clear impact on the choice of R&D mode. In recent years, alcohol-related problems on college campuses have been well documented. This research examines how two different alcoholic beverage health warnings placed on the label of a fictitious brand of beer influence alcohol-related risk perceptions, attitudes and intentions, and characterizations of problem-drinking behaviors of binge and non-binge drinkers in Australia and the United States. The consumer welfare implications of our findings, which show that the dependent measures are influenced by both main and interaction effects, are discussed. 相似文献

Traditionally, consumers used the Internet to simply expend content: they read it, they watched it, and they used it to buy products and services. Increasingly, however, consumers are utilizing platforms—such as content sharing sites, blogs, social networking, and wikis—to create, modify, share, and discuss Internet content. This represents the social media phenomenon, which can now significantly impact a firm's reputation, sales, and even survival. Yet, many executives eschew or ignore this form of media because they don’t understand what it is, the various forms it can take, and how to engage with it and learn. In response, we present a framework that defines social media by using seven functional building blocks: identity, conversations, sharing, presence, relationships, reputation, and groups. As different social media activities are defined by the extent to which they focus on some or all of these blocks, we explain the implications that each block can have for how firms should engage with social media. To conclude, we present a number of recommendations regarding how firms should develop strategies for monitoring, understanding, and responding to different social media activities. 相似文献

There are important synergies for the next generation of ethical leaders based on the alignment of modified or adjusted mental models. This entails a synergistic application of moral imagination through collaborative input and critique, rather than “me too” obedience. In this article, we will analyze the Milgram results using frameworks relating to mental models (Werhane et al., Profitable partnerships for poverty alleviation, 2009), as well as work by Moberg on “ethics blind spots” (Organizational Studies 27(3):413–428, 2006), and by Bazerman and Chugh on “bounded awareness” (Harvard Business Review, 2006; Mind &; Society 6:1–18, 2007) Using these constructs to examine the Milgram experiment, we will argue that the ways in which the experiments are framed, the presence of an authority figure, the appeal to the authority of science, and the situation in which the naïve participant finds herself or himself, all create a bounded awareness, a narrow blind spot that encourages a climate for obedience, brackets out the opportunity to ask the moral question: “Am I hurting another fellow human being?” and may preclude the subject from utilizing moral imagination to opt out of the experiment. We will conclude that these forms of almost blind obedience to authority are correctable, but with difficulty. We will argue that linking the modification of mental models to an unbinding of awareness represents an important synergistic relationship and one that can build effectively on the lessons learned from our experience with moral imagination. 相似文献

Astroturf organizations are fake grassroots organizations usually sponsored by large corporations to support any arguments or claims in their favor, or to challenge and deny those against them. They constitute the corporate version of grassroots social movements. Serious ethical and societal concerns underline this astroturfing practice, especially if corporations are successful in influencing public opinion by undertaking a social movement approach. This study is motivated by this particular issue and examines the effectiveness of astroturf organizations in the global warming context, wherein large corporate polluters have an incentive to set up astroturf organizations to undermine the importance of human activities in climate change. We conduct an experiment to determine whether astroturf organizations have an impact on the level of user certainty about the causes of global warming. Results show that people who used astroturf websites became more uncertain about the causes of global warming and humans’ role in the phenomenon than people who used grassroots websites. Astroturf organizations are hence successful in promoting business interests over environmental protection. In addition to the multiple business ethics issues it raises, astroturfing poses a significant threat to the legitimacy of the grassroots movement. 相似文献

The current debt repayment problems facing many farmers have led to requests for changes in farm financing mechanisms for the sector. Two such debt repayment instruments, namely the shared risk mortgage and commodity-based loan mortgage, were recently introduced by the Farm Credit Corporation. This study is a comparative evaluation of their potential to adjust the cash flow repayment requirements of these mortgages, compared with a floating-interest-rate conventional mortgage, using an average Ontario dairy farm as a case study. The results of the analysis show that the changes in the mortgage interest and principal repayment conditions improved the cash flow positions of the farms relative to the conventional mortgage. The study thus concludes that the changed mortgages offer some prospect for improving farm net cash flows when interest rate levels are reduced at least for a short period and when fluctuations in interest rates are limited. However, the major impact of these changes in mortgage conditions is related to this level of interest rate charged, and other methods of reducing or delaying interest charges on farm mortgages may be equally successful in improving net cash flows of farmers with relatively large debts. Les problèmes financiers dont font face actuellement les producteurs agricoles ont amenés une remise en cause des mécanismes de financement du secteur agricole. Deux instruments de paiement de la dette, l'hypothèque à risque partagé (SRM) et le prêt basé sur les prix (CBLM), ont été récemment introduits par la Société du Crédit Agricole. Cette étude évalue le potentiel de ces deux instruments à ajuster les remboursements requis, comparativement à l'hypothèque conventionnelle à taux d'intérêt variable, en utilisant comme étude de cas, une ferme laitière moyenne type de l'Ontario. Les résultats de l'analyse montrent que les changements dans le remboursement en capital et intérêt améliorent la position de cashflow des fennes comparativement à l'hypothèque conventionnelle. L'étude conclue que les deux nouveaux instruments étudiés offrent des espoirs d'amélioration des cashflows nets des fermes lorsque le niveau des taux d'intréêts est réduit pour au moins une courte période et que les fluctuations de ceux-ci sont limitées. Cependant, l'impact majeur des changements dans les conditions de l'hypothèque est relié au niveau du taux d'intérêt demandé et d'autres méthodes de réduction ou de retarement des frais d'intérêts sur les hypothèques agricoles peuvent être également bénéfique dans l'amélioration du cashflow net des producteurs relativement endettés. 相似文献
