Establishing predictive validity of measures is a major concern in marketing research. This paper investigates the conditions
favoring the use of single items versus multi-item scales in terms of predictive validity. A series of complementary studies
reveals that the predictive validity of single items varies considerably across different (concrete) constructs and stimuli
objects. In an attempt to explain the observed instability, a comprehensive simulation study is conducted aimed at identifying
the influence of different factors on the predictive validity of single versus multi-item measures. These include the average
inter-item correlations in the predictor and criterion constructs, the number of items measuring these constructs, as well
as the correlation patterns of multiple and single items between the predictor and criterion constructs. The simulation results
show that, under most conditions typically encountered in practical applications, multi-item scales clearly outperform single
items in terms of predictive validity. Only under very specific conditions do single items perform equally well as multi-item
scales. Therefore, the use of single-item measures in empirical research should be approached with caution, and the use of
such measures should be limited to special circumstances. 相似文献

We study the effects of managerial turnover on earnings management activities in a model in which managers care about their external reputation. We develop an overlapping generations model showing that both outgoing and incoming managers bias reported earnings such that typically very low returns are reported in the first period after a manager has been replaced. Outgoing managers shift earnings forward to their last period in office as they will not benefit from earnings realized after that. Incoming managers can have an incentive to shift earnings to the second period in office as reported earnings will, immediately after a management change, only be partly attributed to their own ability. New ventures as well as new business units experience significant difficulties in finding a viable business model. They often
need to adapt their initial business model due to the presence of uncertainty and ambiguity. Technology-based companies are
confronted with particularly high degrees of uncertainty and ambiguity. We hypothesize that adaptation is crucial for the
performance (measured as survival) of these businesses, but that this effect is moderated by the (in)dependence of the new
technology-based business and by the industry in which it is active. We test the adaptation-performance hypothesis through
a survival analysis of a sample of 117 independent new ventures and business units. Our findings suggest that adaptation is
beneficial in less mature, capital-intensive and high-velocity industries but not so in more mature, stable industries. Also,

This paper develops the method of matching as an econometric evaluation estimator. A rigorous distribution theory for kernel-based matching is presented. The method of matching is extended to more general conditions than the ones assumed in the statistical literature on the topic. We focus on the method of propensity score matching and show that it is not necessarily better, in the sense of reducing the variance of the resulting estimator, to use the propensity score method even if propensity score is known. We extend the statistical literature on the propensity score by considering the case when it is estimated both parametrically and nonparametrically. We examine the benefits of separability and exclusion restrictions in improving the efficiency of the estimator. Our methods also apply to the econometric selection bias estimator. 相似文献

The aim of this study is to analyse how the internal market orientation, considered from a dual perspective, cultural and behavioural, affects the development of external market-oriented behaviours by improving the attitudinal results (affective commitment and job satisfaction) of the internal customers. An empirical study was carried out, based on the perceptions of 68 managers and 296 supervisors at four- and five-star hotels in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain). The findings show that (1) the internal market orientation (IMO) has a positive influence on the effective development of market orientation behaviours in managers and supervisors; (2) the IMO has a positive influence on the affective commitment and job satisfaction of hotel managers, but not supervisors; and (3) greater affective commitment and job satisfaction have no significant effect on market orientation behaviours in hotel managers or in supervisors. This study draws upon prior research on corporate governance and examines whether the informativeness of earnings, proxied
by the earnings response coefficient varies with the percentage of outside independent directors serving on the board, the
absence of CEO duality, and the presence of independent audit (AUDC), compensation (COMC), and nominating (NOMC) committees.
The results suggest a positive association between the proportion of outside independent directors serving on firm’s boards
and earnings informativeness. However, the results do not suggest an association between non-CEO duality, or independent AUDC,
