An Assessment of the Impact of Implementing the European Commission's Agenda 2000 Cereal Proposals for Specialist Wheatgrowers in Denmark

This paper undertakes an assessment of the impact of implementing the European Commission's Agenda 2000 cereal proposals for specialist wheatgrowers in Denmark. The economic model of a representative farm developed in Rygnestad and Fraser (1996) is extended to include a model of nitrate leaching and then used to simulate the impact of implementing the proposals. The results of this simulation are compared and contrasted with those of the sectoral and regional impact studies reported in European Commission (1998b). In particular, the proposals are shown to have an environmentally-beneficial effect in terms of reduced nitrate leaching, with the magnitude of this effect dependent both on the quality of land and on the ex ante set-aside rate.     

The impact of online user reviews on hotel room sales

Despite hospitality and tourism researchers’ recent attempts on examining different aspects of online word-of-mouth [WOM], its impact on hotel sales remains largely unknown in the existing literature. To fill this void, we conduct a study to empirically investigate the impact of online consumer-generated reviews on hotel room sales. Utilizing data collected from the largest travel website in China, we develop a fixed effect log-linear regression model to assess the influence of online reviews on the number of hotel room bookings. Our results indicate a significant relationship between online consumer reviews and business performance of hotels.     

How do Mainland Chinese travelers choose restaurants in Hong Kong?: An exploratory study of individual visit scheme travelers and packaged travelers

The introduction of the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS), which allows Mainland Chinese travelers (hereafter called Chinese travelers) to visit Hong Kong on an individual basis, has been beneficial to the fast recovery of the local economy in Hong Kong from severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The IVS travelers, together with the packaged travelers who visited Hong Kong by joining packaged tours, are presently forming the largest segment of inbound travelers to Hong Kong. Despite the significant economic contributions of Chinese travelers to Hong Kong in general, and to the foodservice sector in particular, there has been an absence of prior studies on IVS travelers’ behavior of selecting restaurants in the existing hospitality and tourism literature. This paper reports on an exploratory study that investigated the perceived importance of attributes that pertain to the selection of restaurants from the perspective of IVS and packaged travelers from Mainland China. Empirical findings of a questionnaire survey with 230 Chinese travelers, including 127 IVS travelers and 103 packaged travelers, showed that the respondents in general viewed the included attributes as relatively important. In addition, only two attributes exhibited significant differences between IVS and packaged travelers. Findings of this research would be useful for hospitality and tourism practitioners to better prepare for receiving the growing number of Chinese travelers.     

Delphi in a future scenario study on mental health and mental health care

The article highlights methodological issues of futures research on mental health (care). In particular the limited relevance of quantitative psychiatric epidemiology is emphasized. The mental health sector in the Netherlands is characterized as a balance of power between professionals, institutions, insurance companies, patient organizations and local and national governments. To value shifts in this balance and to assess future interventions and policies, opinions of people who know the sector well are indispensable. Delphi with its main characteristics of anonymity, iteration and feedback to the participants and being a predominantly qualitative method for data collection was chosen to gather this type of information. Finally the Delphi method as a tool in policy-oriented futures research is discussed. The strength of Delphi must be found in its capacity to generate new options for intervention and to enhance consciousness of the future in order to reinforce rationality of decision processes. Clarifying dissensus on the issues under study proved to be as relevant as the elucidation of consensus.     

TRADE AND FINANCIAL FLOWS IN A WORLD ACCOUNTING FRAMEWORK: A BALANCED WAM FOR 1990

How accurately do we measure the external deficit of the U.S. or the surplus of Japan? If checked at the global level, statistics on international trade and finance show large discrepancies. Such global statistical discrepancies hamper the analysis and understanding of world economic developments. An accounting framework—labelled World Accounting Matrix (WAM)—is proposed to cross-check the statistical consistency of commodity flows, international payments and internal balances across countries. The framework is applied to data for 1990. To obtain global consistency, substantial adjustments had to be made to the estimates of the external balances of the U.S. and Japan. The implications for global modelling work are potentially vast.     

Corporate accountability and the physical environment: Social responsibility and accounting beyond profit

The social responsibility debates of the last thirty years have resolved little and have had only peripheral effects on traditional business behaviour. Social responsibility issues are re-emerging in the light of the environmental crisis and are far too important to be once again marginalised by traditional business thinking. Economic and environmental criteria will, increasingly, be in conflict and accountants - like all business professionals - are implicated in this, not least because it is accounting that defines the rules, keeps the score, announces the results and determines who shall see them. The paper attempts to re-examine social responsibility and accountability in the light of the re-emerging environmental concern and suggests some ways in which accounting might contribute towards an organisation's attempts to become less unsustainable.     

Social exclusion and labour market transitions: a multi-state multi-spell analysis using the BHPS

In this empirical paper, we assess how social exclusion arises in the context of labour market transition behaviour. We estimate a multi-state multi-spell competing risks model and identify five states: high skilled employment, intermediate skilled employment, low skilled employment, unemployment and out-of-the-labour market. Using data from the first seven waves of the British Household Panel Survey, we show that a substantial number of workers were trapped in a vicious circle of low-skilled employment, unemployment and inactivity in the 1990s. Workers who are part of the so-called flexible workforce are more likely to suffer social exclusion.
