The skinny on wide QRS complexes

The presence of widened QRS complexes in a life insurance applicant's electrocardiogram may be due to such things as an intraventricular conduction defect, preexcitation syndrome, left ventricular hypertrophy, ventricular pacing, hyperkalemia and a ventricular rhythm. Clinical information and basic electrocardiogram interpretation techniques can usually narrow the differential diagnosis. Risk assessment of intraventricular conduction defects requires identification of typical electrocardiographic patterns followed by a careful search for additional electrocardiographic features, which may indicate the presence of more extensive conducting system disease and/or coexisting disease affecting the myocardium.     

Information and Transformation in Teaching Businesses Ethics

Teaching in business ethics has conformed to the dominant Western model of pedagogy whereby students are provided with information about ethics but rarely asked to analyse their own behaviour. There is no evidence that this approach has any practical impact on future behaviour and much reason to doubt its potential in this regard. The pedagogical traditions of India offer an alternative approach to ethical improvement – one based in self-reflection and personal transformation. The following paper considers the potential of this tradition and offers practical suggestions for its integration into Western teaching practice.

Longer term housing market effects of a major US airport closure

Using a unique dataset, we examine various effects of closing Denver's Stapleton Airport, and subsequent redevelopment, on nearby housing markets. We find immediate anticipatory price effects upon announcement, but no price changes at closing and little evidence of upward trending prices between announcement and closing. Post-closure, more higher income and fewer Black households moved in, and developers built larger houses on larger lots. Increases in the price of pre-existing housing are also found. Finally, we find that post-closing price increases were largest in areas that were closest to the center of new commercial development and that had greater exposure to new housing construction.

Does Competition Affect Bank Risk?

Although policymakers often discuss trade-offs between bank competition and stability, past research provides differing theoretical perspectives and empirical results on the impact of competition on risk. We employ a new approach for identifying exogenous changes in the competitive pressures facing individual banks and discover that an intensification of competition materially boosts bank risk. With respect to the mechanisms, we find that competition reduces banks’ profits, pricing power, and charter values and increases banks’ provision of nontraditional, riskier banking services and lending to riskier firms.
