The history of a number of industries is marked by a succession of eras, associated with different dominant technologies.
Within any era, industry concentration tends to grow. Particular eras are broken by the introduction of a new technology which,
while initially inferior to the established one in the prominent uses, has the potential to become competitive. In many case
new entrants survive and grow, and the large established firms do not make the transition. In other cases, the established
firms are able to switch over effectively, and compete in the new era. This paper explores a model which generates this pattern
and has focused on the characteristics of the demand. We argue that the ability of the new firms exploring the new technology
to survive long enough to get that technology effectively launched depends on the existence of fringe markets which the old
technology does not serve well, or experimental users, or both. Established firms initially have little incentive to adopt
the new technology, which initially is inferior to the technology they have mastered. New firms generally cannot survive in
head-to-head conflict with established firms on the market well served by the latter. The new firms need to find a market
that keeps them alive long enough so that they can develop the new technology to a point where it is competitive on the main
market. Niche markets, or experimental users, can provide that space.

Tele teaching is a form of instruction that transmits image and speech back and forth between two or more physically separate locations. This paper investigates students' views on the use and effectiveness of tele teaching. Tele teaching was used to transmit Introductory Accounting lectures to students at two campus locations in Australia. Results show that, while students did accept that some benefits of tele teaching existed, most preferred the traditional face-to-face approach to teaching accounting. 相似文献

This study is the first to empirically examine the applicability of the Value Chain Scoreboard™ proposed by Lev (2001) as an alternative disclosure framework for intangible assets (IA). The context of the research is the top 200 emerging market companies, which are the focus of increasing international attention. We empirically examine the extent of IA disclosures and find that emerging market companies do actively engage in voluntary disclosure practices to disseminate mainly quantitative IA information to their global stakeholders. Corporate-specific factors such as the adoption of IFRS/U.S. GAAP, industry type, and price-to-book ratio are key influences significantly associated with the level of IA voluntary disclosure. In addition, country-specific factors, including risks associated with economic policies and legal systems, are found to be significantly associated with the level of IA disclosure. 相似文献
