Capital Growth,Financing Source and Profitability of Small Businesses: Evidence from Taiwan Small Enterprises

This paper examines the relationship between profitability and financial capital for 1,276 small firms in Taiwan over the period 1992–1997. The results indicate a statistically positive relationship between profitability and capital growth. When financial capital is further divided into debt and equity, the results indicate a significantly positive relationship between profitability and equity financing, but a significantly negative relationship between profitability and debt financing. Moreover, the profitability of small firms is positively related to both the external economic conditions and the firms previous profitability.     

Environmental Conditions,Reservation Prices,and Time on the Market for Housing

A general analytical model to describe the impact of environmental disamenities on duration of sales is derived. A statistical technique to recover a sellers reservation price is proposed. An econometric procedure that consistently estimates market duration and a sellers reservation price is described. An application to the impact of highway noise on property values and market duration is presented. The estimation results show that, while highway noise has a significant negative impact on forming reservation prices and predicting sale prices, the noise effect on duration of sales is not statistically significant. Empirical evidence also shows a negative impact of market duration on reservation prices, which indicates an updating process for reservation prices over time.     

Labor Productivity in the Efficiency-Wage Model: A Consideration of the Firm's Death Rate

It is inappropriate to equate the "representative firm" with the typical firm, particularly for economies which consist of small enterprises where a large number of jobs are created or disappear as establishments are born or die. If workers care about the job disappearance risk, their utility and effort offered will be influenced by the death rate of firms. This paper sets out an efficiency-wage model and takes the probability of the firm's closure into account. By extension, it is shown that equilibrium labor productivity is plausibly procyclical under certain circumstances, which is consistent with the stylized facts observed in many countries.

中国股市开、收盘波动性的比较研究

利用EGARCH模型,对2000年1月至2007年4月间沪深两市具有代表性的股票及指数的开收盘收益率的波动性进行实证分析,结果表明收益率序列有明显的ARCH效应,其波动性具有显著的非对称性的冲击的持续性;在样本期内,上交所的个股和指数未能观察到开盘波动性高于收盘波动性的现象,而深交所个股在2006年7月实施收盘集合竞价机制之后比较明显地观察到开盘波动性高于收盘波动性的现象。

Optimal information revelation in procurement schemes

A buyer procuring a single input possesses private information about each potential supplier's degree of fit with the buyer's needs. She can search among suppliers either sequentially or simultaneously. As long as the distribution of the fit parameter is not overly skewed to the left, sharing information with suppliers yields intensified price competition under simultaneous search. Moreover, the buyer cannot benefit by providing suppliers additional information beyond their own fitness parameter. Information revelation is never optimal with sequential search.

Deregulation and environmental differentiation in the electric utility industry

This paper analyzes how economic deregulation impacts firm strategies and environmental quality in the electric utility industry. We find evidence that the deregulation introduced to this historically staid industry has stimulated environmental differentiation. Differentiation is most likely to appear where its point of uniqueness is valued by customers, and we confirm this relationship in our sample. Specifically, utilities that served customers who exhibited higher levels of environmental sensitivity generated more ‘green’ power. The tendency for firms to differentiate in this way is lessened if they are relatively more dependent on coal‐fired generation or relatively more efficient. Thus, there is evidence that firms sort themselves into either differentiation or low‐cost strategies as the competitive realities of a deregulated world unfold. Deregulation and the ensuing environmental differentiation illustrate how utilities exploited formerly unmet customer demand for green power. The result has been greater levels of renewable generation and, hence, a cleaner environment. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
