The impact of the brain drain on the educational systems of the countries of origin is examined, with particular reference to governmental decisions concerning education subsidies and the market for educational services. Two hypothetical cases are considered, one in which governments increase expenditures for education in the presence of a widespread brain drain, the other in which they decrease such expenditures.  相似文献

Like sociology, development sociology is currently torn between several perspectives, each of which accentuates a completely different view of the discipline. The systems, conflict and humanist perspectives are providing dominant theoretical approaches in the search for an appropriate theory. It is maintained that the current theoretical controversy impedes the development of such a theory.

Systems theory corresponds with neo‐evolutionary development theories and these are largely influenced by the works of Talcott Parsons. Neo‐Marxist development theory, on the other hand, follows the general argument of conflict theory, the accent being on the dialectic relationship between development and underdevelopment. Development theory related to humanism is still in an embryonic stage.

A plea is made for an attempt to design a Weberian‐based orientation which will embrace the current perspectives in order to develop a workable alternative for Southern Africa.  相似文献

Summary So far, the labour market has not received any special attention from macro-econometric model builders. In this article an attempt has been made to describe the labour market in detail, paying attention to such important phenomena as the friction between labour supply and demand, the heterogeneity of labour, the dependence of labour supply on the labour-market situation, the Phillips mechanism and the impact of real wages on labour demand. To make it suitable for policy simulations, the model has been extended to a complete macro-econometric model, taking account of the fact that both labour and capital limit the production possibilities.This paper summarises an extensive Dutch report on the construction of a model for the Netherlands labour market. The title of the original report is AMO-K: Een arbeidsmarktmodel met twee categorieën arbeid; (AMO-K, A labour-market model with two categories of labour) ; it was published by the Netherlands Economic Institute (NEI) in Rotterdam in the so-called Olive Series, 1982-2, pp. 403ff. Some details of the model presented in that report were changed after its publication; see G. den Broeder, AMO-K 81-12, Tussenrapport betreffende de verdere ontwikkeling van het arbeidsmarktmodel (Interim report on the further development of the labourmarket model), Rotterdam, September 1983. Since then, only minor changes have been carried through. The model reproduced in this paper is the modified version. The model was developed within the National Programme of Labour-Market Research (NPAO) (now defunct), the NPAO organisation having granted a commission to the NEI in Rotterdam.  相似文献

Recent emphasis on customer service in both the academic and trade literature reveals a growing but confusing body of knowledge. Both the marketing and logistics disciplines have offered varying definitions of customer service, but have failed to offer a comprehensive framework which represents customer service and its related marketing and logistics issues. This article offers the viewpoint that customer service is a conceptual unifying factor for integrating marketing and logistics. The channel system is introduced as the vehicle by which buyer/seller relationships must be analyzed to understand formation of buyer expectations, interaction of marketing and logistics activities, and subsequent customer service performance. The institutional, behavioral, and physical dimensions of channel activity influence many of the marketing and logistics decisions made by management. The framework offered in this article differs from previous efforts in that customer service is the output of the unified activities of marketing and logistics. It considers marketing and logistics decisions jointly, re-evaluates and expands the production function in logistics, and ties customer service to customer satisfaction or dissatisfaction.  相似文献

This study presents analysis of the impact of “official product” sports sponsorships with the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Hockey League (NHL), the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) on the stock prices of sponsoring firms. The primary finding of the study is that, in the main, announcements were accompanied by increases in shareholder wealth. The 53 sponsors analyzed experienced mean increases in stock valuations of about $257 million. A multiple regression analysis of firm-specific stock price changes and selected corporate and sponsorship attributes indicates that official product sponsorships with the NBA, NHL, and PGA and those with smaller market shares were associated with the largest gains in share prices. Although corporate cashflow (a proxy for agency conflicts) is statistically unrelated to shareholder approval, sponsorships by high-technology companies were associated with stronger stock price reactions than otherwise. Finally, product congruence with the sponsored sport was positively related to changes in stock prices. T. Summary In summary, it is important, from time to time, to step back and consider the publication process, as it exists in marketing and as it operates forJAMS. As part of this consideration, the issue of journal quality is paramount. As mentioned above, there are many ways to assess journal quality, and each method has its advantages and its limitations. In the field of marketing, we have a long history of relying on perceptual data, and this tradition is reflected in methods that rely on expert ratings and rankings of journals. In our field, we also have a history of trying to collect “objective” or quantitative data, and methods that rely on citation counts fit into this tradition. Here, using contrasting but related methods, we report encouraging evidence about the growing status and reputation ofJAMS as an influential publication outlet for marketing scholarship.  相似文献

This article reports a study designed to determine if reference group influence varies between consumers classified as situationally-oriented and dispositionally-oriented. A model is introduced which posits that store loyalty is primarily determined by store-image evaluation and shopping-complex loyalty. Store image-evaluation, in turn, is hypothesized to be determined, to a major extent, by self-image/store-image congruity, and shopping-complex loyalty by area loyalty and socioeconomic status. The model was tested using a path analytic procedure and the results were consistent with the model. A replication study was attempted and the results reinforced the validity of the proposed model.  相似文献

The energy and environmental crises are important problems facing the United States today. With less than 6% of the world's population, the U.S. accounts for 47% of the world's automobiles and nearly 35% of the total energy demand. Automobiles consume nearly 14.5% of the total energy demand and are the major source of air pollution. Whiel there are many potential solutions for the energy and environmental crises, this paper specifically focuses on how the electric car can be a partial answer to the complex problem of personal transportation. The paper specifically discusses the role of marketing in bridging the gap between technology and the consumer. On the basis of an extensive exploratory study, the authors contend that there is sufficient interest among consumers for an economical, pollution-free, electric car. Understanding the consumer's need and developing a product that is feasible, considering existing technology, is the role that marketing must play.  相似文献

This study examines three trust-building processes and outcomes in sales manager-salesperson relationships. This study, based on a sample of more than 400 business-to-business salespeoples from a variety of industries, shows two trust-building processes (predictive and identification) to be significantly related to salesperson trust in the sales manager. Interpersonal trust was found to be most strongly related to shared values and respect. Trust was directly related to job satisfaction and relationalism, and indirectly related to organizational commitment and turnover intention. Thomas G.
