A factor-analytic approach to bank condition

This paper explores a new approach to early warning systems for commercial banks. Factor analysis and logit estimation are used to measure the condition of individual institutions and to assign each of them a probability of being a problem bank. The model employs widely used financial ratios and information taken from bank examinations. The factors produced by the model for use in the logit estimation are very similar to the CAMEL rating system used by bank examiners. Empirical results show that the combination of factor analysis and logit estimation is a promising method of evaluating bank condition.     

Environmental scanning, industry structure and strategy making: concepts and research in the hospitality industry

This paper presents a model for strategic analysis in the restaurant industry. A review of the evolution of environmental scanning and the concept of industry structure is offered. These concepts as well as the results of research into the environmental scanning behavior of hospitality firms are synthesized into a proposed model for corporate environmental scanning activities.

A New Approach to Identifying Structural Development in Economic Systems: The Case of the Queensland Economy

Recently, some economists have come to view economic development as a process of ongoing structural change which has self-organisational features. What is required is evidence concerning the self-organisational character of economic development. In other words, is economic growth associated with growth in the complexity of its structure and with a parallel rise in organisational interdependence? An extended version of qualitative input-output analysis, termed Minimal Flow Analysis (MFA), is used in this paper to analyse the structural linkages and changes that have occurred in the Queensland economy over the last two decades. The MFA evidence confirms that there has been a steady increase in the complexity of the Queensland economy. Economic coordination has occurred, to an increasing extent, through market intermediation. From a self-organisational perspective, it is clear that the Queensland economy has followed a rapid and coherent developmental path, marked by the emergence of bonded structures in its core and increasing complexity on its periphery.

Role portrayal in advertising and editorial content,and eating disorders: an Asian perspective

Researchers have postulated that exposure to images of thin ‘ideal body’ women portrayed in advertising and editorial content on television and in magazines contributes to eating disorders among female college students in Western countries. The central aim of this study is to examine the relationship between such advertising and editorial, and self- reports of eating disorder and body image dissatisfaction among Hong Kong females. The Eating Attitude Test (EAT) and Body Dissatisfaction subscale in the Eating Disorder Inventory are employed in a survey of females in Hong Kong. The analysis indicates that overall media consumption is a positive predictor of eating disorder and body image dissatisfaction. Several policy recommendations and suggestions for future research are made.     

Determinants of environmentally responsible behaviours for greenhouse gas reduction

Canadian household consumption and driving behaviours are responsible for a significant portion of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produced across Canada. This paper examines and characterizes two sets of consumer behaviours, indoor GHG reduction behaviours and automobile GHG emissions, using data from a 2006 telephone survey of a representative random sample of 1002 Canadian households with cars. Two statistical models are used to analyse the impact of four groups of variables (environmental attitudes, policy opinions, automobile‐related indices and socio‐demographics) on GHG reduction at the household level. Results were obtained using ordered probit and Ordinary Least Squares regressions. Indoor GHG reduction behaviours were not correlated with automobile GHG emissions. Dominant factors increasing consumer GHG reduction behaviours both indoors and on the road were sense of personal responsibility and previous environmental activism. Canadians who least actively participate in GHG reduction activities were more likely to be living in the Prairie provinces and to be male.
