Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a concept that has acquired a new resonance in the global economy. With the advent
of globalization, managers in different contexts have been exposed to the notion of CSR and are being pressured to adopt CSR
initiatives. Yet, in view of vastly differing national cultures and institutional realities, mixed orientations to CSR continue
to be salient in different contexts, oscillating between the classical perspective which considers CSR as a burden on competitiveness
and the modern perspective that views CSR as instrumental for business success. Capitalizing on the two-dimensional CSR model
developed by Quazi and O’Brien (Journal of Business Ethics25, 33–51, 2000), this article assesses managerial perspectives towards CSR in three neighboring Middle Eastern countries (Lebanon,
Syria and Jordan) through an empirical study involving 333 managers. The findings lend support to the Quazi and O’Brien model
(2000), suggesting some commonalities in CSR orientations as well as minor divergences. The findings are discussed and cross-cultural
implications drawn accordingly. 相似文献
Spikes in international food prices in 2007–2008 worsened poverty incidence in Indonesia, both rural and urban, but only by small amounts. The paper reaches this conclusion using a multisectoral and multihousehold general equilibrium model of the Indonesian economy. The negative effect on poor consumers, operating through their living costs, outweighed the positive effect on poor farmers, operating through their incomes. Indonesia's post‐2004 rice import restrictions shielded its internal rice market from the temporary world price increases, muting the increase in poverty. But it did this only by imposing large and permanent increases in both domestic rice prices and poverty incidence. Poverty incidence increased more among rural than urban people, even though higher agricultural prices mean higher incomes for many of the rural poor. Gains to poor farmers were outweighed by the losses incurred by the large number of rural poor who are net buyers of food, and the fact that food represents a large share of their total budgets, even larger on average than for the urban poor. The main beneficiaries of higher food prices are not the rural poor, but the owners of agricultural land and capital, many of whom are urban based. 相似文献
This study addresses work–family conflicts and job attitudes of white-collar single women and the ensuing work-related attitudes in a developing country context. After an overview of gender roles in Arab society, several hypotheses were advanced and tested. Although married females reported higher family–work conflicts than single females, the latter group faced a host of strains, which are presented and analyzed. Despite being educated, single females were underpaid and their upward mobility seemed to be significantly hampered. They reported lower job satisfactions and had high intentions to leave their organization. Implications for further research and practice are discussed. 相似文献
This study evaluates relationship between personality, gender and departments of a random sample of 294 employees working in 5-star hotels in the Antalya Region of Turkey. Evaluation was conducted using Cattell’s 16 PF (Sixteen Personality Factor) questionnaire. T-test assessed the relationship between personality and gender and one-way Anova analysed personality and department relationship. Results indicate that in the relationship between personality and gender there were significant variance for the subscales dominance, rule-consciousness, sensitivity and self-reliance. Sixteen Personality Factor (16 PF) showed significant differences for warmth, reasoning, emotional stability, dominance, social boldness, apprehension and tension subscales, in terms of personality and department relationship. 相似文献
This study utilises higher objectives postulated in Islamic moral economy or the maqasid al-Shari’ah theoretical framework’s novel approach in evaluating the ethical, social, environmental and financial performance of Islamic banks. Maqasid al-Shari’ah is interpreted as achieving social good as a consequence in addition to well-being and, hence, it goes beyond traditional (voluntary) social responsibility. This study also explores the major determinants that affect maqasid performance as expressed through disclosure analysis. By expanding the traditional maqasid al-Shari’ah,, we develop a comprehensive evaluation framework in the form of a maqasid index, which is subjected to a rigorous disclosure analysis. Furthermore, in identifying the main determinants of the maqasid disclosure performance, panel data analysis is used by including several key variables alongside political and socio-economic environment, ownership structures, and corporate and Shari’ah governance-related factors. The sample includes 33 full-fledged Islamic banks from 12 countries for the period of 2008–2016. The findings show that although during the nine-year period the disclosure of maqasid performance of the sampled Islamic banks has improved, this is still short of ‘best practices’. Through panel data analysis, this study finds that the Muslim population indicator, CEO duality, Shari’ah governance, and leverage variables positively impact the disclosure of maqasid performance. However, the effect of GDP, financial development and human development index of the country, its political and civil rights, institutional ownership, and a higher share of independent directors have an overall negative impact on the maqasid performance. The findings reported in this study identify complex and multi-faceted relations between external market realities, corporate and Shari’ah governance mechanisms, and maqasid performance.
In this study we examine the effect of matching, a comprehensive networking concept, on the perceived export barriers and export performance of small exporting firms. We introduce matching as a moderating variable affecting the link of perceived internal/external export barriers to export performance. Using a sample of 106 UK-based exporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), we find that matching alleviates the negative impact of perceived internal export barriers on export performance. Furthermore, the empirical results show that export experience and export commitment reduce managers' perceived internal and external export barriers. The study shows that matching, as a networking-tool at multiple levels, can help to overcome export barriers, thus providing a mechanism to offset challenges opened up through nationalistic policies. 相似文献
In this review study, it is aimed to reveal the antecedents of destination image (DI) through analyzing the findings of quantitative studies published between 1999 and 2019. Findings suggest that DI could be handled with pretrip and posttrip DI separately. Antecedents of pre and post DI are divided as destination‐based and personal‐based antecedents. Making such a categorization and mapping the findings of studies accordingly helps to clarify our understanding about the DI formation process. A model is suggested considering the pre and posttrip destination and personal‐based antecedents in the literature to explain the affective, cognitive, and overall DI. 相似文献
We investigate if agency theory effectively explains agency conflict in the context of a developing country namely, Pakistan. Utilising data from 26 semi-structured interviews, we found that in Pakistan, there is no variation in risk preferences of principals (minority shareholders) and agents (majority shareholders). We also found that remuneration packages and board independence are not effective tools for governing owner managers in Pakistan. Thus, policy makers must shift their focus from soft internal governance mechanisms of appropriate remuneration and board independence. We propose for a rigorous external audit function, and appointment of independent directors and external audit firms by regulator. 相似文献
