Rather than providing evidence of business process re-engineering (BPR) as another example of cultural change rhetoric, this case study shows BPR as a substantive initiative that has had a considerable impact on health care professionals. A hybrid of differing bureaucratic professions allows for a diversity specific to the health service. Using methods based on wavelets and aggregate series, long memory in the absolute daily returns, squared daily returns, and
log squared daily returns of the S&P 500 Index are investigated. First, we estimate the long memory parameter in each series
using a method based on the discrete wavelet transform. For each series, the variance method and the absolute value method
based on aggregate series are then employed to investigate long memory. Our findings suggest that these methods provide evidence
of long memory in the volatility of the S&P 500 Index.

The current expansion has seen record-high levels of
transactions in housing, extraordinary growth in the aggregate
value of owner-occupied housing, and large increases
in the amount of funds realized from the
refinancing of mortgage debt. Many analysts thus have
pointed to the strong housing market and rising home
prices as a major pillar supporting recent economic growth
and have expressed concern that a contraction in housing activity and values could pose a significant risk to consumer
spending and real economic growth. This paper explores
the channels by which the housing market may
affect consumer spending and assesses the potential risk
from a softening in the housing market. Our assessment is
that while a housing slowdown by itself may slow consumer
spending some, it is probably insufficient to precipitate
a downturn without some additional shocks outside of
the sector.

The proxy hypothesis states that the negative relationship between inflation and stock returns is spurious and really only proxies for the positive relationship between stock returns and real variables. Previous testes of the proxy hypothesis have used actual values instead of forecasted values for the real activity variable. Many American multinational enterprises (MNEs) are currently active in Russia despite the turbulence encountered in that transitional economy. Most seem to have entered as an extension of their global strategies with a long-term horizon. While some entered with considerable involvement and substantial investment, others followed a more cautious or incremental path. This article focuses on how MNE strategies have evolved after entry and describes six strategic approaches. Strategic investment flexibility is found to depend upon a company 's original entry strategy and tolerance for risk, as well as its assessment of the legal and political environment, industry conditions, market readiness for its products or services, competition, and the investment required to establish a sustainable competitive position. Keys to successful strategy development are drawn from the experiences of US MNEs which have established growing businesses in the vast Russian market. Given the recent ethics scandals in the United States, there has been a renewed focus on understanding the antecedents to
ethical decision-making in the research literature. Since ethical norms and standards of behavior are not universally consistent,
an individual’s choice of referent may exert a large influence on his/her ethical decision-making. This study used a social
identity theory lens to empirically examine the relative influence of the macro- and micro-level variables of national culture
and peers on an individual’s intention to behave ethically. Our sample consisted of respondents from Germany, Italy, and Japan.
The results indicated that both national culture and peers were found to act as significant referents in ethical decision-making
dilemmas. Although peers exerted a much stronger influence on an individual’s ethical decision-making, the impact of peers
varied depending on the national culture levels of individualism and power distance.

Rafik I. Beekun (Ph.D., the University of Texas at Austin) is Professor of Management and Strategy in the Managerial Sciences
Department at the University of Nevada. Reno, and Co-director, Center for Corporate Governance and Business Ethics. His current
research focuses on business ethics, national cultures and the link between management and spirituality. He has published
in such journals as the Journal of Applied Psychology, Human Relations, Journal of Management, Journal of Business Ethics and Decision Sciences.
Yvonne Stedham is a Professor of Management in College of Business at the University of Nevada, Reno. She received a Ph.D.
in Business and an MBA from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas and undergraduate degrees in Economics and Business
from the University of Bonn, Germany. She joined the University of Nevada, Reno in 1988 and served as Chair of the Managerial
Sciences Department from 1999-2002. Dr. Stedham's research covers a broad spectrum of management issues with a special focus
on international, business ethics and gender aspects, and has been published in the Journal of Management. Women in Management Review, the Journal of Management Studies, the Journal of Business Ethics,the Journal
of European Industrial Training, and the Journal of Knowledge Management Practice, Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resource, and others.
Jeanne H. Yamamura, CPA, MIM, PHD, is Associate Professor at the University of Nevada Reno. Her research is focused in the
area of the international management of accounting professionals and in ethical decision making. She has published in journals

Solidarity has long been considered essential to labour, but many fear that it has declined. There has been relatively little scholarly investigation of it because of both theoretical and empirical difficulties. This article argues that solidarity has not declined but has changed in form, which has an impact on what kinds of mobilization are effective. We first develop a theory of solidarity general enough to compare different forms. We then trace the evolution of solidarity through craft and industrial versions, to the emergence of collaborative solidarity from the increasingly fluid ‘friending’ relations of recent decades. Finally, we examine the question of whether these new solidarities can be mobilized into effective collective action, and suggest mechanisms, rather different from traditional union mobilizations, that have shown some power in drawing on friending relations: the development of member platforms, the use of purposive campaigns and the co‐ordination of ‘swarming’ actions. In the best cases, these can create collective actions that make a virtue of diversity, openness and participative engagement, by co‐ordinating groups with different foci and skills. 相似文献

Australia, like many other countries, suffers high turnover of nurses and police officers. Contributions to effectively manage the turnover challenge have been called for, and there are few Australian studies of nursing/policing turnover intentions. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of supervisor–subordinate relationships and perceived organisational support (POS) upon engagement, well-being, organisational commitment and turnover intentions. Second, we examined the similarities and differences between nursing and policing work contexts. The retention of nurses/police has been investigated from traditional management perspectives; however, we used a different theoretical approach – social exchange theory – and evaluated its utility as a framework. Findings are from Australian data collected during 2010–2011 from 510 nurses and 193 police officers, using a survey-based, self-report strategy. Partial least squares path modelling was used to analyse these data. Results indicated that for both samples, engagement predicts well-being and then, well-being predicts affective commitment and intentions to leave. MANOVA results suggested that nurses had significantly higher levels of satisfaction with their supervisor–subordinate relationships, POS, engagement, well-being and affective commitment than police officers. Only the intention to leave was similar for both groups. Given that turnover can be influenced by supervisors/management, this study provides new knowledge about targeted retention strategies. 相似文献
