This paper uses panel data from rounds V–IX of the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS) to examine the extent to which households are able to protect their consumption from fluctuations in their income. It is found that consumption is only partially protected from idiosyncratic shocks to income with food consumption being better protected than non‐food consumption expenditures. This suggests that adjustments in non‐food expenditures may be an important component of the risk management tools of Russian households. The analysis also provides evidence on the extent and nature of the coping strategies adopted by households. It is demonstrated that households complement their self‐insurance strategies, of borrowing, adjusting their labour supply, and selling assets, with informal risk sharing arrangements with households within their community. An examination of the role of sample selection confirmed that these findings are quite robust to this potential source of bias. Furthermore, accounting for the role of measurement and imputation errors in the measure of household income revealed that OLS estimates may yield a misleading picture about the extent to which urban and rural households are insured from idiosyncratic income shocks. We describe the evolution of productivity growth in a competitive industry with free entry and exit. The exogenous wage rate determines the firms’ engagement in labor productivity enhancing process innovation. There is a unique steady state of the industry dynamics, which is globally asymptotically stable. In the steady state, the number of active firms, their unit labor cost and supply depend on the growth rate but not on the level of the wage rate. The literature so far has analyzed the effects of minimum quality standards (MQS) in oligopoly, using models of pure vertical
differentiation, with only two firms, and perfect information. We consider products that are differentiated horizontally and
vertically, with imperfect consumers’ information, and more than two firms. We show that a MQS changes the consumers’ perception
of produced qualities. This increases the firms’ returns from quality enhancing investments, notwithstanding contrary strategic
effects. Our analysis justifies the use of MQS in industries where consumers cannot precisely ascertain the quality of goods,
for instance pharmaceuticals or products with chemical components involved.

Should everybody be in services? The effect of servitization on manufacturing firm performance

The servitization of the manufacturing sector refers to the evolution of manufacturers' capabilities to offer services as complements to or substitutes for the goods that they produce. A vast literature has described these strategies and has shown that this phenomenon is widespread and growing in most developed economies. However, very little systematic evidence of the extent or consequences of servitization based on a comprehensive data set of firms exists. In this paper, we provide such evidence using exhaustive data for French manufacturing firms between 1997 and 2007. We find that the vast majority of French manufacturers sell services in addition to producing goods. The shift toward services is growing steadily but at a slow pace. We also estimate the impact of servitization on firm performance. Controlling for various sources of endogeneity bias, our most conservative results show that firms that start selling services increase their profitability by 0.4%, their employment by 2.1%, and their total sales by 0.6%. For small businesses, we also find a positive impact on the production of goods. We also uncover strong heterogeneity across manufacturing industries. 相似文献

In some contexts data envelopment analysis (DEA) gives poor discrimination on the performance of units. While this may reflect genuine uniformity of performance between units, it may also reflect lack of sufficient observations or other factors limiting discrimination on performance between units. In this paper, we present an overview of the main approaches that can be used to improve the discrimination of DEA. This includes simple methods such as the aggregation of inputs or outputs, the use of longitudinal data, more advanced methods such as the use of weight restrictions, production trade-offs and unobserved units, and a relatively new method based on the use of selective proportionality between the inputs and outputs. 相似文献

This study investigates the behavior of nine Asian closed-end country funds traded on the NYSE over the period 1990–2001.
The results indicate that fund discounts follow a mean-reverting process and, furthermore, display various cross-border patterns
of influence that are contingent on the period examined. Notably, for the overall period, the Korean Fund exhibits the strongest
market leadership. However, in the period following the Asian financial crisis, movements in the Thai Fund's discount have

We present a modified version of the non parametric Hawkes kernel estimation procedure studied in Bacry and Muzy [arXiv:1401.0903, 2014] that is adapted to slowly decreasing kernels. We show on numerical simulations involving a reasonable number of events that this method allows us to estimate faithfully a power-law decreasing kernel over at least six decades. We then propose a eight-dimensional Hawkes model for all events associated with the first level of some asset order book. Applying our estimation procedure to this model, allows us to uncover the main properties of the coupled dynamics of trade, limit and cancel orders in relationship with the mid-price variations. 相似文献

This paper proposes SupWald tests from a threshold autoregressive model computed with an adaptive set of thresholds. Simple examples of adaptive threshold sets are given. A second contribution of the paper is a general asymptotic null limit theory when the threshold variable is a level variable. We obtain a pivotal null limiting distribution under some simple conditions for bounded or asymptotically unbounded thresholds. Our general approach is flexible enough to allow a choice of the auxiliary threshold model or of the threshold set involved in the test specifically designed for nonlinear stationary alternatives relevant for macroeconomic and financial topics involving arbitrage in presence of transaction costs. A Monte-Carlo study and an application to the interest rates spread for French, German, New-Zealander and US post-1980 monthly data illustrate the ability of the adaptive SupWald tests to reject unit-root when the ADF does not. 相似文献

Do social security systems "crowd out" private transfers fromyounger to older generations? This question has generated muchtheoretical discussion, but little empirical work exists toconfirm or refute this crowding-out hypothesis. We investigatethe connection between social security and private transfersin Peru, using the Peruvian Living Standards Survey, and findthat private transfers from young to old would have been nearly20 percent higher without social security benefits. This indicatesthat the Peruvian social security system is less effective atdelivering benefits to the elderly than a simple assignmentof government expenditures would suggest. An Empirical Investigation of Goodwill in Austria: Evidence on Management Change and Cost of Capital
This study assesses whether new chief executive officers (CEOs) or CEOs in their early tenure carry out goodwill impairments more intensively than senior CEOs. Further, it investigates the relationship between cost of capital and goodwill, as well as whether companies that report goodwill and are audited by a Big 4 auditor display lower cost of capital. The findings show that a change in CEO does not significantly lead to higher goodwill impairments. Using Austria as a case study, the study finds that, in the years of their early tenure, CEOs in Austria generally do not adopt goodwill impairment‐related opportunistic behaviours. This study indicates that companies that have carried out goodwill impairment tend to display higher cost of capital, reflecting the potential uncertainty about their future prospects and cash generating ability. The findings show that companies that report goodwill and are audited by a Big 4 auditor tend to display lower cost of capital. 相似文献
