Experimental determination of the power functions of the two-sample rank tests of WILCOXON, VAN DER WAERDEN and TERRY by Monte Carlo techniques

In this paper the authors present the results of a sampling experiment to determine the power functions of the two-sample rank tests of WILCOXON, VAN DER WAERDEN and TERRY against shift alternatives for normal parent distributions, based on 2000 trials for each alternative. The sample sizes considered are m = n = 6 and m = n = 10. The powers of the three rank tests are compared with the power of the STUDENT t-test and with each other. The results indicate that in small samples (i) the power of the WILCOXON test is not much smaller than the power of the t-test and (ii) the normal scores tests are only slightly superior to the WILCOXON test, if at all.     

New reporting forms attempt to meet common needs

Easing the pain of reporting finances is one blessing non-profits would jump at. Now, a specially designed form has been developed by the National Information Bureau which abolishes scores of governmental report forms and makes the task of reporting much easier.     

Revitalization of traditional resorts

The process of revitalizing tranditional resorts is discussed, through examination of the redevelopment of Scheveningen — a leading seaside resort in the Netherlands. Location and organizational aspects of the redevelopment are identified as two key factors in this process. The market analysis, the development plan and investment sources, the role of public authorities and private enterprise and the redevelopment results are evaluated.     

Distribution,taxation and employment in an open economy

Summary If taxes on labour income are passed on in wages the balanced budget multiplier may be negative. The present paper analyses this problem from a theoretical point of view applying a linearized version of a model for the small open economy. The model is dynamic, because account is taken of capital accumulation. Short-run and long-run solutions are expressed in terms of fiscal policy variables, a wage push variable, the price level abroad and world demand. Numerical examples are supplemented to illustrate the analytical results. Acknowledgement is due for his helpful comment to S.K. Kuipers     

The relation between income,intelligence, education and social background

In this article the authors have tried to estimate the relative importance of education, intelligence and social background for the explanation of the variations in personal income. The investigation has been carried out on Swedish data which were generously made available to them by Professor Husén of Stockholm University.The results pointed to education as the most important factor in explaining the income variations, followed by the social class of the fathers and the level of intelligence in this order. The relations turned out to be strongly curvilinear.Moreover, the interactions between the explanatory variables have been studied. It was found that their combined contribution is much larger than would correspond to additivity, in particular for the higher classes of the variables. They clearly reinforce each other.

A Sequential distribution-free two-sample grouped test with three possible decisions*

Summary A sequential two-sample grouped rank test with two possible decisions (onesided testing) developed by WILCOXON, RHODES and BRADLEY (1963) is generalized to a sequential test with three possible decisions (two-sided testing) using a method given by SOBEL and WALD (1949). An auxiliary table with some moments concerning LEHMANN'S alternatives for the normal distribution, is given in order to facilitate the choice of the alternative hypotheses.
