This paper examines three developmental regimes in Singapore, China and Malaysia. In these three cases, heavy state intervention was necessary because their economies required significant economic restructuring. For Singapore, state intervention was necessary for the process of industrial transformation. For Malaysia, state intervention was necessary because the government wanted to reallocate economic resources as a means to deal with ethnic conflict. For China, state intervention was necessary in order to gradually “marketize” the socialist economy. The paper also briefly discusses the impact of the Asian Financial Crisis (1997–1999) on these developmental regimes. It finds that for all three cases, economic restructuring was successful because of long-term and heavy state intervention. It explains that, unlike the other developmental states of Asia, these developmental regimes were able to undertake such significant restructuring because of the state's power base, which even managed to survive the Asian Financial Crisis. It concludes with some comments about the future of state intervention in a rapidly globalizing world.  相似文献

In the 2008 Wincott Lecture, the author argues that huge obstacles stand in the way of desperately needed economic reforms in India. Liberalisation initiatives have been undermined by poor governance, ineffective institutions and powerful vested interests. We derive the unique strategic rules from the initial two‐choice situations in a given environment. Abstract . AN empirical test with Canadian data was made of the relative income hypothesis which states that fertility and labor force participation depend upon relative income, where relative income refers to the current family income level relative to the family's desired income level. The interpretation of the desired income level is modified slightly to mean that it is determined not by the past parental income, as originally formulated, but by contemporaneous income levels of other age groups. An empirical model of labor force participation is estimated for the post-war period. The results on the whole tend to provide empirical support for the relative income hypothesis. The post-war baby boom, which led to a decline in the income of young adults relative to that of older age groups, had the effect of increasing participation rates of young adults, especially of young (married) women.  相似文献

The emerging notion that corporatism/centralisation reduces inter-industry wage dispersion is the main leading force behind this paper. We use data from a long series of comparable datasets to analyse the evolution of the size of inter-industry wage dispersion in Portugal. We compare the results with the ones obtained in other countries to find that the country has a high inter-industry wage inequality when compared with the European standard. Nevertheless, the dispersion decreased during the second half of the 1980s along with the establishment of a neo-corporatist setting, supporting the expected reduction.  相似文献

Analysing the spillover effects is crucial for small and open regions where productive leakages are relevant, as could be the case of Galicia within the Spanish context. Therefore, the main aim of this paper is to examine the spatial interactions between Galicia and the rest of Spain economies that tourism consumption involves, for the period 2001–2007. An interregional input–output model is applied for the year 2005. Additionally, three different kinds of tourism consumption are considered: two inbound and a domestic one. Among other results, we found that around 1% of the gross value added of the small economy depends on the tourism consumption in the rest of the country. The Internet is changing the transactional paradigms under which businesses-to-business marketers operate. Business-to-business marketers that take advantage of the operational efficiencies and effectiveness that emerge from utilizing the Internet in transactions are outperforming firms that utilize traditional transactional processes. As an example, Dell computers, by utilizing business-to-business processes that take advantage of the Internet, has gained the largest market share in the PC business when compared to traditional manufacturers such as Compaq. This paper first examines the genesis of the Internet movement in business-to-business markets. The long-term impact of the increase of business-to-business utilization of the Internet on the marketing theory and marketing process is then discussed. We consider the properties of a pollution tax when the regulated firm has a discrete choice of technologies with which to reduce pollution. The firm's technology choice makes possible two sequences of play: the traditional one in which the regulator moves first, committing to a tax rate before the firm adopts a technology, and an alternative one in which the firm moves first by adopting a technology. We find that a range of pollution levels, including possibly the first-best one, are unattainable when the regulator moves first. The regulator may be better able to achieve the first-best outcome when the firm moves first.  相似文献
