In donation contexts, many advertising appeals focus on the benefits that those in need will receive as the result of donations. Yet little is known about the effect that benefit information has on willingness to give. In this research, we differentiate between two types of benefits typically emphasized in appeals: emotional (which focus on the positive emotions beneficiaries experience as the result of donations) and functional (which focus on the basic needs met as the result of donations). We conduct three experiments and find that appeals focusing on emotional benefits increase willingness to donate relative to appeals that focus on functional benefits. We also provide evidence that visualization of benefits mediates the effect of benefit type on willingness to donate and introduce relevant moderators. In addition to contributing to theoretical understanding of donation behavior, this research also provides managers with practical tools to encourage donations.  相似文献

This paper explores the politics of the 2014 floods in the contentious and conflict-prone Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The September 2014 floods were the most serious natural disaster in the state in the past 60 years, and affected some two million people in the Kashmir valley. Drawing on qualitative interview evidence from 50 flood victims in south, central and north Kashmir, the paper examines the extent to which the disaster transformed existing political narratives. In doing so, it examines the role of the state and central governments, the army, local volunteers, and the media. The paper engages with the politics of disaster literature, exploring how disasters can serve as a lens rather than as a catalyst, and stressing the relevance of understanding the social construction of disaster narratives.  相似文献

ABSTRACT . Technological breakthroughs, macroeconomic pressures, and advances in economic thought have led to a redefinition of the role of the state from producer to arbiter among private interests. Still, the details of such a redefinition vary among countries. We aim to understand the reasons for such differences and draw their policy implications through a case study of the electricity industry in Brazil, China, and India. Over the past decade, these countries have sought to restructure their state‐owned electric utilities. The restructuring effort has led to different outcomes in the three countries. We argue that ideology, institutional arrangements, and the behavior of interest groups lie at the heart of such differences.  相似文献

Outsourcing and alliance collaboration have become prominent features of the global economy. Empirical studies demonstrate that outsourcing alliances are often not as successful as their initiators expect them to be. National cultural differences are frequently viewed as a crucial factor when such alliances fail. While empirical studies are abundant, theoretical frameworks that explicate the role of national cultural differences in shaping the dynamics of outsourcing alliances are rare. This article builds on Kumar and Nti's (1998) discrepancy model to specify how culture affects the dynamics of outsourcing alliances. We suggest that national cultural differences give rise to process and outcome discrepancies in outsourcing alliances. Notably, outsourcing alliances evolve through three stages–formation, operation and outcome–with discrepancies arising in each of these stages (Das & Teng, 2002). We develop a framework to link discrepancy management to these different stages, and to the notions of task‐oriented and relationship‐oriented cultures. Our study has a number of implications for future research and managerial practice. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The epidemiologic, demographic, and socio-political transitions underway in many low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) are associated with a substantial burden of disease due to injuries. LMIC have devoted relatively little attention to the injury problem. This paper argues that whereas prevention remains paramount, improving health care services for injuries will also contribute to reducing the burden. It examines the reasons for the relative inaction in LMIC to date, and contrasts this to high-income countries (HIC) which have seen substantial falls in mortality from improved trauma care systems. Mortality data, although readily available, are the tip of the clinical iceberg and there is a need for better-quality hospital data that can be used to monitor any future improvements. Models of trauma care from HIC are reviewed. It is suggested that the greatest potential for improvement can be achieved if entire trauma systems are improved, including pre-hospital, hospital and rehabilitation care. LMIC may not be able to afford the whole system and improving the most sensitive components of the system may be a better option. Models of trauma care developed in HIC need careful consideration to determine their effectiveness, appropriateness, affordability and equity implications for LMIC. Imports of blueprints from elsewhere are likely to fail; context sensitive and appropriate policies need to be developed locally through a consultative process. Effective working needs to be across disciplines, involving consultation with stakeholders, and requires investment in education, training and equipment. The evidence base for trauma services in LMIC is almost non-existent, highlighting the urgent need for research in these settings.  相似文献

Growing globalization and environmental uncertainty have increased the challenges managers face in delivering services or products to the customer. Integration of information systems across partnering organizations has become the backbone of supply chain management, as amalgamation facilitates the sharing of information required to enhance organizational flexibility and responsiveness while minimizing risk and inventory costs. Using data from the Australian retailing sectors, this study investigates the mediating role of inter-organizational information system (IOIS) integration on the relationships between inter-organizational compatibility and supply chain capabilities. The results indicate that inter-organizational compatibility of technical, strategic, and cultural inter-organizational dimensions facilitate IOIS integration and supply chain capabilities. To maximize benefits for all chain members, IOIS integration needs to be embedded in the strategies and goals of partnering organizations. Business-to-business and industrial marketing managers need to be aware that IOIS integration processes require support of top managers of the partnering organizations and should be embedded in the organizations' strategic goals.  相似文献

Motivated by the recent success of integer programming based procedures for computing discrete forecast horizons, we consider two-product variants of the classical dynamic lot-size model. In the first variant, we impose a warehouse capacity constraint on the total ending inventory of the two products in any period. In the second variant, the two products have both individual and joint setup costs for production. To our knowledge, there are no known procedures for computing forecast horizons for these variants.Under the assumption that future demands are discrete, we characterize forecast horizons for these two variants as feasibility/optimality questions in 0–1 mixed integer programs. A detailed computational study establishes the effectiveness of our approach and enables us to gain valuable insights into the behavior of minimal forecast horizons.  相似文献

The authors study a temporary exchange-rate based stabilization plan in which agents face a sudden stop of capital inflows. The model generates a rising path of real interest rates in advance of the exchange rate collapse. This generates a time-dependent non-monotonic path of required premium on domestic assets. The model-generated asset price dynamics closely mimic their empirical counterpart, as witnessed during recent collapses of exchange-rate based stabilization plans. The model also reproduces consumption and foreign reserve dynamics that closely mimic the data.  相似文献
