Decision-making researchers have largely focused on showing errors and biases in consumers' decision-making processes without paying much attention to the social welfare and policy implications of these systematic behaviors. In this paper, we explore how findings and methods in behavioral decision research can be used to help consumers improve their decision making and enhance their well-being. We first review select findings in behavioral decision research to explain why consumers need help in decisions, and based on these findings, suggest various interventions that could be effective within the scope of libertarian paternalism. Ethics and effectiveness of the interventions are also discussed.  相似文献

This paper examines how multinational corporations use different mechanisms to integrate four HRM practices in their foreign subsidiaries: financial compensation, performance appraisal, training and development, and recruitment and selection. Our analysis of 76 European-owned subsidiaries located in China reveal systematic differences in the use of integration mechanisms across the four HRM practices. The findings suggest that the usage of global integration mechanisms is contingent on the purposes of integration – headquarters control, and inter-unit coordination – as well as on the degree to which the mechanism is capable of responding to needs for local adaptation of the individual HRM practice in question.  相似文献

Following, and frustrating, the formative works of F. T. Marinetti, founder and fomenter of Futurism, contemporary consumers are far from overwhelmed by developments in technology and the turmoil of rapidly changing social structures, having come instead to understand, and to enjoy, such ‘future shocks’ as means of ordering and reordering their day‐to‐day lives in both shared and individual terms. Using widely recognisable yet culturally specific instances of items on offer to the public, these same trading patterns‐these communities within common speech‐are presented, against a background of multidisciplinary readings and prolific puns, as hugely flexible mechanisms, and metaphors, for the symbolic, even the biological, extension of everyday existence through the mass consumption of our industrially generated histories in tandem with our market‐led imaginings and innovations.  相似文献

Moral behaviour, and more recently wisdom and prudence, are emerging as areas of interest in the study of business ethics and management. The purpose of this article is to illustrate that Cicero—lawyer, politician, orator and prolific writer, and one of the earliest experts in the field recognised the significance of moral behaviour in his society. Cicero wrote ‘Moral Duties’ (De Officiis) about 44 BC. He addressed the four cardinal virtues wisdom, justice, courage and temperance, illustrating how practical wisdom, theoretical/conceptual wisdom and justice were viewed in Rome of the first century BC. ‘Moral Duties’ is a letter admonishing his son, Marcus. It refers to personal behaviour, business practice and analyses terms such as good faith and criminal fraud. In addition, it contains material which would be suitable for tutorials/seminars and discussions, particularly in the areas of critical thinking in business ethics and general management. A study of De Officiis in respect to present day management and business practice could give a wider perspective to business ethics and management students. If concepts such as moral virtue, moral propriety and moral goodness, many of which seem to be ignored in business situations today, are to be embedded in business leaders of the future, it is reasonable to expect that these qualities will be analysed and discussed by business students today. Further, a study of Cicero’s six-step approach, when preparing an address/speech, could be useful and productive for practitioners and students in this area.  相似文献

The purpose of our study was to compare survival rates of colon carcinoma patients who had undergone attempted curative hepatic resection based on liver staging by computed tomographic angiography (CTA) or portography (CTAP) with previously reported survival rates of patients who underwent similar surgery without preoperative CTAP evaluations. A total of 404 CTAP studies performed at three institutions were reviewed. Of this group, 197 had colon carcinoma. Sixty-nine of the colon patients went to surgery. Actuarial adjusted yearly survival rates were calculated for the prior CTAP colon group and compared to historical controls. The control survival data were taken from reports published prior to the CTAP era. Our study demonstrated no difference in the 1-year survival data between the groups. However, the CTAP patients had greater survival in years 2–4. This greater survival may be multifactorial but in part due to better surgical selection caused by CTAP.  相似文献

We investigate the cross-sectional determinants of corporate bond returns and find that downside risk is the strongest predictor of future bond returns. We also introduce common risk factors based on the prevalent risk characteristics of corporate bonds—downside risk, credit risk, and liquidity risk—and find that these novel bond factors have economically and statistically significant risk premiums that cannot be explained by long-established stock and bond market factors. We show that the newly proposed risk factors outperform all other models considered in the literature in explaining the returns of the industry- and size/maturity-sorted portfolios of corporate bonds.  相似文献

Background and aims: Short-acting bronchodilators are normally used as supplemental relief medication for breakthrough symptoms in COPD patients. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to assess if more frequent vs infrequent use of relief medication in maintenance-treated COPD patients, split by the severity dyspnea, was associated with an increase in the overall disease burden.

Methods: A population-based cross-sectional survey (Adelphi DSP) was conducted among patients with COPD in five European countries. Information was collected on demographic and clinical characteristics, reliever inhaler use, dyspnea (mMRC), health status (CAT, EQ-5D), sleep quality (JSEQ) and healthcare resource use including moderate–severe COPD exacerbations, physician visits, COPD medications and other COPD related resources. The humanistic and economic burden was compared between patients with infrequent reliever use (<1 occasion/week) and more frequent use (≥ 1 occasion/week). The association between increased reliever use and economic burden was also examined after matching patients based on propensity-scores balancing demographic and disease burden characteristics.

Results: Among the 1373 COPD patients prescribed a reliever inhaler, 29% reported using reliever medication ≥1 occasion/week. In the unmatched cohort, more frequent reliever use (n?=?377) compared to infrequent use (n?=?996) was linked to poorer health status (CAT: 25.7 vs 20.0; p?p?p?p?p?=?.0001). In the propensity-score matched population, more frequent reliever use was also associated with significantly higher annual costs for COPD management (€5,034 vs €3,705, p?=?.0327) compared to patients with infrequent reliever use.

Conclusion: In moderate-to-severe COPD, more frequent reliever use is associated with increased exacerbation risk and increased management costs.  相似文献

Theoretical models on fiscal sustainability hypothesize that indebted governments can lower their current debt by generating future primary surpluses, ceteris paribus. While both developed and developing countries struggle with the issue of debt stabilization, the latter, in particular face heightened sensitivity from creditors, which provides them an impetus to respond more strongly to stabilize their debt. Based on a panel of 53 developing countries, we examine the fiscal response of these countries to changes in their debt‐to‐gross domestic product ratio. We find evidence of a positive relationship between the debt and primary surplus and that countries adjust along both the revenue and expenditure margins at roughly the same rate. Abstract

Given the sensitive nature of communicating talent status in an ‘exclusive’ talent management system and the complexity involved in simultaneously sending signals of exclusivity and inclusivity, some organisations avoid open communication and instead opt for ‘strategic ambiguity’ – intentionally maintaining an element of secrecy and information asymmetry. However, we know relatively little about the effects of this communication approach as a feature of the organisational context on the reactions of employees. Drawing on signalling theory, we examine the reactions of both talents and ‘B’ players on finding out about their talent status in the context of a company that adopts strategic ambiguity in its communication about talent. The data consists of 24 in-depth, qualitative interviews with individuals with experience of TM in a Finnish subsidiary of a large, US-based multinational corporation. The findings reveal that the contextual effects of strategic ambiguity in talent communication affected the reactions of talents and ‘B’ players in distinctly different ways, but had few long-term positive effects on the attitudes and behaviours of either group. These findings present important theoretical and practical implications for the role of communication and organisational context in employee reactions to talent pool inclusion and for talent management more generally.  相似文献

We derive lower and upper bounds for the Value-at-Risk of a portfolio of losses when the marginal distributions are known and independence among (some) subgroups of the marginal components is assumed. We provide several actuarial examples showing that the newly proposed bounds strongly improve those available in the literature that are based on the sole knowledge of the marginal distributions. When the variance of the joint portfolio loss is small enough, further improvements can be obtained.  相似文献
