We examine the implications of separating students of different grade levels across schools for the purposes of educational production. Specifically, we find that moving students from elementary to middle school in 6th or 7th grade causes significant drops in academic achievement. These effects are large (about 0.15 standard deviations), present for both math and English, and persist through grade 8, the last year for which we have achievement data. The effects are similar for boys and girls, but stronger for students with low levels of initial achievement. We instrument for middle school attendance using the grade range of the school students attended in grade 3, and employ specifications that control for student fixed effects. This leaves only one potential source of bias–correlation between grade range of a student's grade 3 school and unobservable characteristics that cause decreases in achievement precisely when students are due to switch schools–which we view as highly unlikely. Recent deregulation of telecommunications in the U.S. and elsewhere has highlighted the importance of interconnection in network industries. In this paper, we analyse interconnection in a deregulated network where the participants compete in the final retail market. We consider both the case of a mature industry as well as one where a new entrant challenges the incumbent. In the later case, network externalities allow the incumbent to use the terms of interconnection to maintain its dominant position. Moreover, in either case, competition in the retail market can be undermined by collusion over access prices. We discuss the implications for some of the provisions of the new U.S. Telecommunications Act, specifically mandatory interconnection and reciprocity of tariffs, comparing these to the simple bill and keep rule. 相似文献

Cocoa and coffee are the most important crops in Côted'Ivoire. Until recently, the difference between world and administeredproducer prices provided an important source of government revenue.As a result of a continued decline of world prices of both crops,however, the Ivoirien government was forced to cut producerprices in half. Because 40 percent of Ivoirien households groweither cocoa or coffee, this cut can be expected to have a considerableimpact on the welfare level of these households. We use the1985 Living Standards Measurement Survey to estimate the welfareeffects of producer price changes for Ivoirien households, permittingan evaluation of the probable consequences of the recent pricecut. The median voter model is widely used in the public choice literature to explain legislator's behavior. According to the model, if voter preferences are unimodal, a vote-maximizing legislator should mirror the position of the median voter. However, the median voter model has not been tested on bimodal issues. This paper fills this critical void by empirically testing the applicability of the median voter model on an issue which clearly meets the criteria for being bimodal: abortion. Using a variety of attitudinal measures from large sample public opinion polls and constituency demographics, this study finds that Senate voting on the 1994 Freedom of Abortion Access bill was highly related to the senator's personal characteristics—especially ideology—and not to constituent opinion or demographics. 相似文献

This paper is the first attempt to analyze ITC Commissioner voting behavior on sunset reviews of antidumping cases. Sunset
determinations entail greater complexity than initial antidumping investigations because ITC commissioners must account for
the impact of dumping protection as well as competitive forces on industry conditions. Empirical findings indicate that ITC
voting is based on both sunset regulation and nonstatutory factors. Results reveal apparent biases against Chinese competitors
and poorer nations generally, and favorable treatment toward U.S. steel producers and high-wage industries. There is also

Despite the difficulty of finding comparable firms in a less populated market, we provide evidence on the usefulness of the comparable firm approach using 275 Australian industrial IPOs from 1993 to 2000. We show that, without adjustments, IPO price-earnings (P/E) and market-to-book (P/B) multiples based on management forecasts of earnings and book values of equities provided in prospectuses are strongly associated with the average P/E and P/B multiples of two comparable firms (matched on industry, growth and size). Additional tests show that the value estimated using the comparable firm approach (in the form of a P/V ratio, where P is the offer price and V is the estimated firm value) is associated with IPO underpricing. 相似文献

Sustainability marketing at the farmers’ market: An ethnographic analysis of ambiguous communication

Farmers’ markets have grown rapidly in recent decades. One explanation for this growth relates to consumers’ view that farmers’ market products are more sustainable. While many have analyzed customer preferences at farmers’ markets, few have examined farmers’ message strategies in this space. Little has been done to analyze the ways farmers use sustainability as a marketing approach. This ethnographic research is based on 100 hr of observation and in‐depth interviews with 36 participants and analyzes the ways farmers position their products as sustainable to customers. The findings indicate that sustainability is not a primary topic of conversation during customerfarmer interaction. However, related concepts such as environment, local, organic, and chemical serve as the proxies for sustainability, even though these messages are presented ambiguously. 相似文献
