Although the issue of regulatory devolution has received muchscholarly scrutiny, rigorous empirical studies of its effectson important policy outcomes are scarce. This article exploresthe effects of partial regulatory devolution in the occupationalsafety arena by exploiting a unique historical anomaly wherebysome US states enforce protective labor regulations that areenforced elsewhere by the federal Occupational Safety and HealthAdministration. Analyzing data from the construction industry,this article contains several important findings. First, stateinspectors use traditional enforcement tools more sparinglythan their federal counterparts, typically citing fewer violationsand collecting lower fines per violation. Second, although federalenforcement significantly lowers the estimated frequency ofnonfatal construction injuries, it also predicts a significantincrease in occupational fatalities. I suggest that althoughhigher underreporting of nonfatal injuries in federally regulatedstates could explain this puzzling finding, it is equally possiblethat different regulatory styles have different "comparativeadvantages" in deterring nonfatal injuries on one hand and occupationalfatalities on the other. Bids and asks are examined over time using auction data from a continuous auction of authentic deadstock sneakers. A theoretical analysis of a double auction over time shows that if buyers and sellers have different rates of patience, then a buyer (respectively, seller) who is patient will be more likely to set a lower initial bid (respectively, higher initial ask). This causes an increase in the unfulfilled bid–ask spread over time. These results are tested using data collected from the StockX website for two specific deadstock sneakers. The purpose of this study was to explore the need for certification in hospitality; and specifically to see if professional certifications are valued when earned at the college level and brought to the workplace when hired. There were 79 online surveys completed by hospitality industry professionals at the level of hiring manager. The results of the study showed that there is value in completing certificates while in college, before entering the hospitality workforce. Such certifications as ServSafe, Alcohol Awareness, and Guest Service Professional, were found important when applying to hospitality industry related positions after earning a 4-year degree. 相似文献

An organization's success in recruiting, selecting, and retaining employees can be attributed, in part, to reactions to a firm's CSR activities. Today, organizations appear to be more frequently pursuing CSR initiatives that are related to social issues. Unlike CSR initiatives which are unrelated to social issues, those that are attached to social causes are more likely to be perceived as controversial. Consequently, how individuals view such actions can impact their perceptions of the firm and may lead to changes in individual behavior. Grounding this work in social identity theory, we explore the effect controversial CSR actions can have on HRM functions. The goal of this effort is to explore and delineate how this shift in CSR may alter the nature of the CSR-HRM relationship and to examine the potential implications for HRM practice. One of the most glaring deficiencies in the current assessment of mortality risk is the lack of information concerning the impact of familial longevity. In this article we update estimates of sibling relative risk of living to extreme ages using data from more than 1700 sibships, and we begin to examine the trend for heritability for different birth-year cohorts. We also build a network model that can be used to compute the increased chance for exceptional longevity of a subject, conditional on his or her family history of longevity. The network includes familial longevity from three generations and can be used to understand the effects of paternal and maternal longevity on an individual's chance to live to an extreme age. 相似文献
