A collaborative project of several Quebec universities, this study investigates nontraditional student withdrawal from undergraduate accounting programmes. A nontraditional student is older than 24, or is a commuter or a part-time student, or combines some of these characteristics. Univariate and multivariate analyses of student dropout factors were performed. A logistic regression for full-time students indicates several significant determinants of student withdrawal: returning to school after working for some time, enrolment in a non-first choice programme, dissatisfaction with programme choice and courses, and low grade point average (GPA). For part-time students, low GPA is the main explanatory factor for student withdrawal. Other factors appear to be instrumental in withdrawal decisions, such as management of external resources (time and family responsibilities) for women. The results suggest that students would benefit from university support services to acquire learning strategies that improve perseverance. Lastly, in-class learning activities that help bolster grades could decrease student withdrawal rates. 相似文献

Using online platforms to deliver educational content, some institutions have developed blended courses that combine the advantages of online instruction with traditional face-to-face (F2F) teaching. This study compares accounting student performance and satisfaction in two blended formats with similar content and design, i.e. F2F+ vs. Online+ courses. It also assesses the characteristics of students who choose the latter option over F2F+ courses. Students in four advanced accounting subjects were surveyed and their course performance was obtained. Results indicate that the main determinants of students’ decision to register for an Online+ course are retaking the course, increased weekly work hours, and belief that this type of blended course facilitates learning. Results show that students in advanced accounting courses with equivalent content and design perform similarly and have the same level of course satisfaction across course delivery formats, as hypothesized under equivalency theory. 相似文献

A new theory in economics (Kahneman, Knetsch, and Thaler, 1986a, b) contends that consumer judgments of seller fairness can explain why sellers in many industries do not raise prices to ration off excess demand. In a small study focusing on automated teller machines (ATM) fees, we obtain empirical support for KKT's prediction that unjustified price increases are perceived as unfair, while cost justification legitimates a price increase in consumers' eyes. We also find, however, that fairness perceptions are not significantly related to behavioral intentions (as the theory would suggest). Many respondents felt the fee was unfair but would not switch banks because of switching costs, while others felt the fee was fair but would switch banks because of the cumulative cost. The hog, dairy, and fed-cattle sectors have become more geographically concentrated within states across the country. Hog and dairy inventories increased in nontraditional production regions but fed-cattle inventories increased only in the three major producing states. Regions in the northeastern quadrant of the United States tended to experience an attrition pattern of geographical concentration in livestock production. In contrast, an augmentation pattern is evident in the western regions where absolute inventory numbers increased along with geographical concentration. Objective: This study evaluated the frequency of reoperation within 1 year of initial intramedullary fixation for patients with pertrochanteric hip fracture and compared 1-year healthcare resource utilization and cost burden for patients with and without reoperation.Methods: This is a retrospective evaluation of medical claims from the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Standard Analytic File. Patients aged ≥65?years who underwent fixation with an intramedullary implant for a pertrochanteric fracture between 2013 and 2015 were included. Healthcare resources that were evaluated included skilled nursing facility (SNF), inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF), readmissions, and outpatient hospital visits. All-cause payments for these services comprised overall cost burden. Generalized Linear Models were used to evaluate healthcare resources and cost burden over 1-year post-surgery and to adjust for confounding between patients with and without a reoperation.Results: A total of 6,423 Medicare patients were included in the analysis. Mean (SD) age was 82.4 (7.8) years, 76.0% were female, and 93.3% were white. A second hip surgery within 1 year after the index fixation procedure was performed in 414 patients (6.4%): 121 (29.2%) contralateral, 115 (27.8%) ipsilateral, and 178 (43.0%) without specified laterality. After adjusting for confounding factors, Medicare patients with ipsilateral reoperations had statistically significantly higher readmissions (100% vs 32.5%, p?0.0001), outpatient hospital visits (96.4% vs 88.8%, p?=?0.018), admissions to a SNF (88.5% vs 80.4%, p?=?0.024), and admissions to an IRF (38.8% vs 22.0%, p?0.0001) compared to patients without reoperations. The adjusted mean total all-cause payments ($90,162 vs $55,131, p?0.0001) during the 1-year follow-up were statistically significantly higher among patients with reoperations as compared to patients without reoperations.Conclusions: Patients who require a second hip surgery after initial fixation with an intramedullary implant for pertrochanteric hip fractures have significantly higher 1-year healthcare resource utilization and 63.5% higher costs than patients without reoperation. 相似文献

Aims: The anterior approach (AA) for total hip arthroplasty (THA) is associated with more rapid recovery when compared to traditional approaches. The purpose of this study was to benchmark healthcare resource utilization and costs for patients with THA via AA relative to matched patients.Materials and methods: This study queried Medicare claims data (2012–2014) to identify patients who received THA via an AA from experienced surgeons, and matched these patients to a control cohort (all THA approaches). Direct and propensity-score matching were employed to maximize similarity between patients and hospitals in the two cohorts. Hospital length of stay (LOS), the proportion of patients discharged to home or home health, and post-acute claim payments during the 90-day episode were assessed. Generalized estimating equations were applied to control for imbalances between the cohorts and clustering of outcomes within hospitals.Results: A total of 1,794 patients were included after patient matching. Patients who received AA had significantly lower mean hospital LOS vs patients in the control group (2.06?±?1.36 vs 2.98?±?1.58 days, p?<?.0001). The adjusted proportion of patients discharged to home was nearly 20 percentage points higher in the AA cohort vs the control cohort (87.3% vs 68.7%, p?<?.0001). Post-acute claim payments for AA patients were nearly 50% lower than those for control patients ($4,139 vs $7,465, p?<?.0001).Conclusion: AA patients had significantly lower post-acute care resource use when compared to control patients. ‘Accueil’ is a French word that means feeling welcome somewhere and being introduced into a process that takes the visitor from being an outsider (a stranger) to being an insider (one of us). Accueil also means feeling the host’s genuine pleasure in welcoming his or her guests through words, attitudes, and actions. Based on a survey (n = 1,003) done for the Quebec Department of Tourism1, we look at how different segments of visitors perceived the ‘accueil’ they received while traveling in the province of Quebec. The results are analysed for lodging, restaurants and attractions. We found that accueil is perceived differently depending on the age of the visitor, the group size and its composition. To a lesser extend, it is also influenced by gender and social status. The characteristics of the trip (distance, purpose and length) have little impact on accueil. 相似文献

This article investigates the role of networks in new product development by reporting on a contemporary case study of a firm in the defence electronics sector. A specific focus is the development and ongoing management of a network that comprises a number of formal inter-firm strategic alliances. The paper begins by reviewing earlier literature on technology strategies for innovation that has identified a key role for inter-firm networking in the organization and management of new product development. We then consider the related issue of the relevant management expertise, which enables firms to adopt a network approach to their strategy for innovation by developing a competence in the process of network building. In this particular case study the critical issue centred upon the extent of the internal resources in terms of time and personal effort that was devoted to building trust and actively managing various inter-firm relationships over time. The article concludes that while inter-firm networking can facilitate new product development across firm boundaries, it is not a panacea for success. Whilst financially successful in terms of product and market development, the networking strategy has also set up problems within the particular case study firm in terms of resourcing and managing the very growth that has been generated. 相似文献
