Abstract

Mill's case for infant-industry protection is widely regarded as capturing the arguments by Hamilton and List. This paper argues that they are actually analytically different. While all three were influenced by Smith's Wealth of Nations, Mill took from it something different than the other two. His endorsement passage for protection refers to a standalone industry. Hamilton and List attached significance to the pin-making type of division of labor at the economy-level but they emphasized the development of that division as the activation of backward and forward production linkages, à la Hirschman, with increasing diversification and differentiation of occupations and industries. Mill only considered employing customs duties in his passage, although in some personal correspondence in the 1860s he mentioned a subsidy. Contrary to mainstream misrepresentations, Hamilton and List did not restrict themselves to proposing customs duties, but suggested both trade and non-trade interventions to activate linkages. Mill's formulation focuses attention on very simple learning by doing to establish the standalone industry. Thanks to their conception of the development process, Hamilton and List appreciated the complexity of technology acquisitions and devoted far more attention to that subject. The implications of these differences for future research and policy considerations are briefly discussed.  相似文献

We suggest a Markov regime-switching (MS) Beta-t-EGARCH (exponential generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity) model for U.S. stock returns. We compare the in-sample statistical performance of the MS Beta-t-EGARCH model with that of the single-regime Beta-t-EGARCH model. For both models we consider leverage effects for conditional volatility. We use data from the Standard Poor’s 500 (S&P 500) index and also a random sample that includes 50 components of the S&P 500. We study the outlier-discounting property of the single-regime Beta-t-EGARCH and MS Beta-t-EGARCH models. For the S&P 500, we show that for the MS Beta-t-EGARCH model extreme observations are discounted more for the low-volatility regime than for the high-volatility regime. The conditions of consistency and asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimator are satisfied for both the single-regime and MS Beta-t-EGARCH models. All likelihood-based in-sample statistical performance metrics suggest that the MS Beta-t-EGARCH model is superior to the single-regime Beta-t-EGARCH model. We present an application to the out-of-sample density forecast performance of both models. The results show that the density forecast performance of the MS Beta-t-EGARCH model is superior to that of the single-regime Beta-t-EGARCH model.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to use an extended model of the theory of planned behavior to investigate the antecedents which lead to consumers’ purchase of state-branded food products. Relationships among attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, health-consciousness, intention to purchase, and actual purchase were examined. In addition, the moderating role of gender on consumer purchasing was assessed. The hypothetical model was empirically tested using data collected via Amazon Mechanical Turk (Mturk). Results implicated that consumers’ attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control of purchasing state-branded products significantly predicted their intention to purchase, and consumers’ intention to purchase significantly predicted their actual purchase of state-branded products. The relationship between health-consciousness and intention to purchase, however, was not found. Gender differences were found only between consumers’ perceived behavioral control of state-branded purchasing and their intention to purchase. Implications for marketers, farmers, and restaurant owners are provided.  相似文献

The conception of impression management has been widely used for investigating issues such as presentation of staff and enterprise images, or the interaction between customers and service workers. The existing studies in tourism and hospitality tended to adopt an early framework of impression management, thus neglecting the recent development of impression management studies. To enhance the understanding of impression management in relation to tourist service, the present study was conducted to disclose the various strategies tour leaders use for image building or self-presentation. The data were drawn from in-depth interviews. The results showed that diverse tactics, verbal and nonverbal, were employed for impression management in tour operation. Another finding of this study was that the impression management strategies are not mutually exclusive; instead, various links exist among the strategies. The implications for future studies and industry practice were discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents a conceptual framework of Web users’ engagement in tourism information search for a comprehensive understanding of their integrated online and offline search behaviour. The information search experiences are characterised as a process constituting some common elements: prior knowledge and searching experiences, online searching strategies, processing and recording information, barriers to online searching, reasons for ending an online search, summarising information, exchanging information and searching for more information through other sources. Such behaviour goes beyond the scope of information searching and captures the other activities, including information processing, utilising and disseminating. The grounded theory research method is employed as an inductive investigative process in which the authors construct the framework by systematically collecting and analysing data. The aim of this research method is to build a theory. The data sets consist of both semi-structured in-depth interviews with subjects and their field observations based on online searching. A theoretical model incorporating 10 propositions is proposed for future testing.  相似文献

A new generation of durable goods makes an old generation economically, even if not physically, obsolete. Economic obsolescence due to technological innovation requires the durable goods monopolist to implement price discrimination in two dimensions, both between consumers with different valuations and between consumers with different purchase histories. Equilibrium in the game between the durable goods monopolist and consumers depends on the extent of economic obsolescence and the relative sizes of the consumer groups. Underinvestment in innovation may take place. This contrasts with the standard literature on planned obsolescence where the durable goods monopolist overinvests in durability reducing technology.  相似文献

This paper studies the valuation of a class of default swaps with the embedded option to switch to a different premium and notional principal anytime prior to a credit event. These are early exercisable contracts that give the protection buyer or seller the right to step-up, step-down, or cancel the swap position. The pricing problem is formulated under a structural credit risk model based on Lévy processes. This leads to the analytic and numerical studies of several optimal stopping problems subject to early termination due to default. In a general spectrally negative Lévy model, we rigorously derive the optimal exercise strategy. This allows for instant computation of the credit spread under various specifications. Numerical examples are provided to examine the impacts of default risk and contractual features on the credit spread and exercise strategy.  相似文献
