Methods of estimation of regression coefficients are proposed when the regression function includes a polynomial in a ‘true’ regressor which is measured with error. Two sources of additional information concerning the unobservable regressor are considered: either an additional indicator of the regressor (itself measured with error) or instrumental variables which characterize the systematic variation in the true regressor. In both cases, estimators are constructed by relating moments involving the unobserved variables to moments of observables; these relations lead to recursion formulae for computation of the regression coefficients and nuisance parameters (e.g., moments of the measurement error). Since the Sarbanes-Oxley Act was enacted in U.S., there has been a general tendency to globally harmonize regulations and practices of board governance. The purpose of this study is to compare among countries how well the board of directors constrains earnings management. Using a sample of firms from 23 countries, we document some evidence that higher outside directorship on the board is associated with lower earnings management in the international context. We also find that there is no significant difference in the effectiveness of board outside directorship in constraining earnings management between high and low investor protection countries. Our findings mitigate a concern that harmonized corporate governance in low investor protection countries may not work. 相似文献

Understanding the nature of the involvement of faculty in university licensing is important for understanding how technology is transferred through licensing as well as more controversial issues, such as the need for university licensing. Using data from a survey of firms that actively license in from universities, the authors explore the importance of faculty in the licensing and development of inventions, as well as how and why they are used and how the use of faculty relates to characteristics of firms. In particular, the authors find that the use of faculty through sponsored research in lieu of a license is closely related to the amount of basic research conducted by firms, whereas the use of faculty within the terms of a license is related to the prevalence of personal contacts between industry research and development researchers and university faculty. We investigate the estimation and inference in difference in difference econometric models used in the analysis of treatment effects. When the innovations in such models display serial correlation, commonly used ordinary least squares (OLS) procedures are inefficient and may lead to tests with incorrect size. Implementation of feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) procedures is often hindered by too few observations in the cross-section to allow for unrestricted estimation of the weight matrix without leading to tests with similar size distortions as conventional OLS based procedures. We analyze the small sample properties of FGLS based tests with a formal higher order Edgeworth expansion that allows us to construct a size corrected version of the test. We also address the question of optimal temporal aggregation as a method to reduce the dimension of the weight matrix. We apply our procedure to data on regulation of mobile telephone service prices. We find that a size corrected FGLS based test outperforms tests based on OLS. 相似文献

Anna Schwartz's insights and careful analysis of the forces shaping institutions have contributed greatly to our understanding of money, central banks, and monetary policy. We discuss these contributions in the context of three issues. The first concerns governments' role in money. First, we focus on Anna's contribution to our understanding of the quality of money. In this context, we consider how the acceleration of globalization and developments in information technology has, as an external development, forced improvements in institutions and social arrangements. The increasing importance of the internal audit function in the USA is evidenced by the attention focused on this function by professional standard setting bodies (Institute of Internal Auditors, 1989; American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, 1991) and an investigatory commission (National Commission on Fraudulent Financial Reporting, 1987). Previous research in both accounting (Jiambalvo and Pratt, 1982; Pratt and Jiambalvo, 1981) and organisational behaviour (see Yukl, 1989 for a review) has identified specific leader behaviours that result in improved performance and satisfaction. Using a recently developed taxonomy unavailable at the time these previous studies were conducted, this study explores the effect of leader (senior internal auditor) behaviours on subunit (internal audit team) performance and subordinate (internal audit staff) satisfaction. The results of this study indicate that audit efficiency is influenced by both task behaviours (e.g. administering discipline) and relationship oriented behaviours (e.g., facilitating cooperation and teamwork and providing praise and recognition); in contrast, audit effectiveness is influenced primarily by task-oriented behaviour. Staff satisfaction is influenced by both types of behaviour. These associations have implications for the training of internal auditors and assignment of internal auditors to projects. Also, increases in staff satisfaction should result in lower turnover, providing a cost saving to the organisation through reduced training, staffing and recruiting costs. 相似文献
