Transforming South Africa's cities: Prospects for the economic development of urban townships

This article identifies and evaluates the range of strategies being used to generate economic activity close to and within townships, focusing on the three metropolitan areas of Gauteng, the Durban Functional Region and metropolitan Cape Town. After placing townships in the context of the larger city and the overall strategy of local economic development, the article examines the various types of strategies that have been proposed to stimulate and support economic activity: the currently dominant spatial strategies, the provision of services infrastructure, the development of economic infrastructure, small business support services, and public works.     

国内人力资本定量研究综述

本文对2000年以来国内学者建立和发展的人力资本定量研究方面的成果进行了概括。文章共分四部分,第一部分概述了我国早期人力资本研究的情况,第二、三部分分别对宏观和微观人力资本模型进行了综述,第四部分是对我国人力资本经济学研究现状的评述及前景展望。作为一篇综述性的论文,我们期望它为国内学者将来的人力资本研究提供参考。

It is addressed in terms of Nissan's relations with the central and local state, of the company's control over its physical environment, and suppliers, and of the company's policy towards the management of human resources.

The Social Ontology of Virtual Environments

This paper analyzes the ontological structure of institutional and other social entities in virtual environments. The emphasis is on institutional reality, which consists of entities (objects, events, etc.) like money, contracts, and chess pieces, which are constituted in part through collective agreements. It is studied how institutional entities are constructed in virtual environments, how they relate to institutional entities in the real world, and how they are recognized by users.     

台湾居民消费变动的思考

三十多年台湾居民消费变动资料显示，随着经济发展，居民消费变动呈先下降后上升的“U”形变动。本文研究认为，经济发展初期居民收入水平低下，仅能维持基本生活需求，消费倾向相对偏高，随着经济发展，居民收入增加，消费倾向随之下降，之后又由于住宅饱和度上升，经济波动所产生的财富效应，人口结构变动。社会保障制度完善以及流动性约束减弱等因素综合作用，成为台湾居民消费倾向上升的原因，本文同时讨论了台湾居民消费变动对大陆居民消费－储蓄研究的启示。     

The choice of entry mode in sequential foreign direct investment

Relatively few studies have examined the importance of an entry's sequential position to the choice of foreign entry mode. We use a dynamic model to analyze sequential entries into the United States from 1975 to 1992. Our findings show that several independent variables which explain a firm's initial mode of entry do not explain the modes of subsequent entries. These findings underscore the importance of experience in foreign investment, as companies learn from early entries and adapt the modes of subsequent ones. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
