An example of multiple minima in a Cochrane-Orcutt procedure with multiple autocorrelation

We provide an example, based on an equation of the Canadian-US exchange rate, of multiple minima in a generalized Cochrane-Orcutt procedure. Our experiments suggest the need for search procedures in order to correctly identify autocorrelation structures.     

Pragmatic radicalism

On a assisté en Grande-Bretagne au cours des dix années passées non seulement à une réémergence mais à une redéfinition de l'action communautaire. Un développement majeur a été une évolution hors des conceptions pluralistiques précédentes au profit d'analyses basées sur les classes. Cet article examine la partie de cette évolution qui nous intéresse, et qui a été définie comme étant un radicalisme progmatique. Elle est radicale parce que ses buts et sa stratégie consistent à résister à ce qui est ressenti comme des épreuves évitables imposées aux classes ouvrières par un système économique et politique capitaliste. Elle est pragmatique dans un contexte global par suite de la nature contradictoire des activités journalières. Le but du radicalisme pragmatique est de développer des alliances naturelles entre les groupes industriels et les groupes communautaires pour leur intérét commun. Il est considéré que les communautées en lutte manquent de pouvoir politique réel; les luttes purement industrielles manquent également souvent d'objectifs qui pourraient élargir l'horizon politique des travailleurs concernés au-delà des problèmes immédiats en question. Il y a trois niveaux dans la stratégie du radicalisme pragmatique: le niveau industriel, le niveau communautaire et le niveau gouvernemental local. Chacun de ces niveaux est analysé et des exemples sont donnés.     

Coupon and tax effects on new and seasoned bond yields and the measurement of the cost of debt capital

A model of the tax structure of interest rates is developed and simple approximate expressions relating yield to coupon are derived. The effect on these simple expressions of alternative assumptions about holding period length, expectations of future interest rates, and other factors, is evaluated. It is shown that with recent U.S. yield averages the new-seasoned yield spread varies with the new-seasoned coupon spread as the theory prescribes. It is concluded that new issue yield averages should provide a more reliable measure of the cost of debt capital than is provided by seasoned yield averages.     

A new approach to peak load pricing

This paper explores an alternative method of ‘solving’ the problem of recurring time variable demands in a public utility context. It views the utility's load curve as a series of horizontal layers or ‘slices’ of varying lengths, rather than as a series of vertical slices as in the traditional approach. Several cases are examined, and traditional time-of-day pricing is shown to be inefficient or inapplicable in some of them, while ‘demand-layer’ pricing, based on horizontal slicing, is efficient. In still other cases, neither method of pricing is efficient.     

Forecasting foreign exchange rates: an expert judgment approach

Studies have indicated that forecasts by market experts can be more accurate than time series forecasts. This article describes a process for structuring an expert foreign exchange forecast using Saaty's Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The specific example developed is a forecast of the yen/dollar spot exchange rate from the standpoint of a company considering the desirability of arranging for forward exchange cover.
