Preferences are the foundation of economics. Preferences are taken by economists as fixed by some implicitly biological process. In recent decades, behavioral economics has documented the divergence between the nature of human preferences and the assumptions of standard economics. In this study, we use the tool of experimental evolution to study the evolution of color preferences in fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster). In particular, we select for a preference for laying eggs on the color aqua. We find that the flies evolve to lay more than twice as many eggs on aqua. However, this evolution occurs entirely because the flies lay more eggs overall. The flies in this study, do not evolve to lay a higher percentage of eggs on the selected color, aqua.  相似文献

Older adults constitute a rapidly growing demographic segment, but stereotypes persist about their consumer behavior. The goal of this review was to develop a more considered understanding of age-associated changes in consumer decision making. Our theoretical model suggests that age-associated changes in cognition, affect, and goals interact to make older consumers’ decision-making processes, brand choices, and habits different from those of younger adults. We first review literature on stereotypes about the elderly and then turn to an analysis of age differences in the inputs (cognition, affect, and goals) and the outcomes (decisions, brand choices, and habits) of decision processes.  相似文献

The opportunity to achieve the substantial benefits from the “once-in-a-generation” reduction in the support and protection of the agriculture sector under the Doha Development Agenda appears to be slipping away. The paper outlines a series of factors for the delay in the negotiations. The author contends that if developed countries had been more proactive on a trade and development agenda, then there could have been an agreement reached several months ago. Such a developmentally friendly agenda could involve (i) better Special and Differential Treatment on market access and more flexible market access protection for developing countries, (ii) a binding commitment to increase aid for trade assistance, (iii) more resources to provide human resource capacity building in export marketing in developing countries, (iv) an agreement for the termination of trade distorting domestic support, and (v) revisions to the SPS Agreement to accommodate the concerns of developing countries. A developmentally friendly agreement would likely still allow the majority of the Doha Round gains to be realized by developed countries. The paper also tracks the developments, describes the progress, and reviews the empirical estimates of the expected global impact of the eight-year Doha Round negotiations. Un programme soucieux du développement pourrait inclure: i) un « Traitement spécial et différencié» amélioré sur l'accès au marché et une protection de l'accès au marché plus souple pour les pays en développement; ii) un engagement obligatoire pour accroître l'aide au commerce; iii) davantage de ressources pour accroître le renforcement des capacités des pays en développement dans le domaine de la commercialisation des exportations; iv) un accord pour mettre fin au soutien interne qui distord les échanges; v) des modifications à l'Accord MSP pour répondre aux préoccupations des pays en développement. Un accord soucieux du développement permettrait probablement aux pays développés de réaliser la majorité des gains du cycle de Doha. Present codes and practices for the design of relief systems in which rupture discs are used are based either on non-typical system configurations or on “rule of thumb” default values of rupture disc flow parameters. There is a need to develop code methods and common practices based on actual relief system configurations, as well as test methods for determining the actual flow resistance of specific rupture disc devices. Using a novel sample of 83,260 lawsuits filed in US Federal District courts, we extend the results of prior studies investigating market value and reputational losses due to corporate misconduct. We examine alternative explanations for the loss in market value, such as media coverage, the expectation of subsequent litigation, and the defendant's willingness to settle, in addition to previously documented factors. Our results suggest that with the exception of securities litigation, this loss in market value can be attributed to these alternative explanations rather than to reputational consequences. This finding is confirmed by several indirect measures of reputation loss.  相似文献

Strategic planning processes use budgets to implement control and accountability. However, budgets can also be used to generate support for strategic decisions, for example by creating a political spectacle. A political spectacle is a problem engineered to have a specific political impact. This paper investigates politicians’ use of a state budget as a political manoeuvre to defend strategic decisions regarding public employee unions in Wisconsin. The analysis shows how the 2011 state budget in Wisconsin was used to create a political spectacle to generate support for eliminating collective bargaining for public workers, especially public (state) school teachers.  相似文献
