This paper presents theoretical work linking money demand to the perceptions of households about the risk that domestic currency
may become inconvertible or that it may be devalued. An empirical investigation of the size of this effect is carried out
using monthly data for Korea to estimate an augmented demand-for-money equation. It is found that the fear of inconvertibility
arising from the 1997 Korean currency crisis may have caused broad money demand to fall by 4–5% points,equivalent to the loss
of reserves of $6–7.5 billion (or about 30% of reserves as measured at end-November 1997).

This paper provides new evidence on the impact of electronic trading on brokerage commissions by investigating a sample period that covers the period of transition from floor to electronic trading on the Sydney Futures Exchange. After controlling for liquidity, volatility and broker identity, the introduction of electronic trading remains to be associated with lower brokerage commissions relative to floor markets. The study also provides new evidence on brokerage commissions in futures markets finding that commission fees charged on futures trades average 0.002% of transaction value. This is up to 120 times smaller than the magnitude of brokerage fees charged in stock markets, and considerably lower than the magnitude of brokerage fees assumed for futures markets in previous research. Consistent with existing studies based on stock markets, commissions charged per contract decrease with order size reflecting economies of scale in the provision of brokerage services in futures markets. Commission rates are positively related to bid-ask spreads and price volatility, which proxy for the probability of execution error costs and execution difficulty, respectively. Finally, the identity of the broker is found to be a significant determinant of commissions reflecting different pricing schedules across brokers. 相似文献

An issue in the pricing of contingent claims is whether to account for consumption risk. This is relevant for contingent claims on stock indices, such as the FTSE 100 share price index, as investor’s desire for smooth consumption is often used to explain risk premiums on stock market portfolios, but is not used to explain risk premiums on contingent claims themselves. This paper addresses this fundamental question by allowing for consumption in an economy to be correlated with returns. Daily data on the FTSE 100 share price index are used to compare three option pricing models: the Black–Scholes option pricing model, a GARCH (1, 1) model priced under a risk-neutral framework, and a GARCH (1, 1) model priced under systematic consumption risk. The findings are that accounting for systematic consumption risk only provides improved accuracy for in-the-money call options. When the correlation between consumption and returns increases, the model that accounts for consumption risk will produce lower call option prices than observed prices for in-the-money call options. These results combined imply that the potential consumption-related premium in the market for contingent claims is constant in the case of FTSE 100 index options. 相似文献

The value-added tax, VAT, has become a popular means of raising funds for governments around the world. Countries seeking to reduce variation in tax revenues as well as raise revenue to solve deficits often consider a VAT, and the IMF in particular has become an advocate for the tax for countries seeking tax reform. For all its popularity, its ability to deliver on these promises remains understudied. Countries with a lower cost of raising funds may instead choose to spend more instead of paying down their debts. This paper uses matching techniques to estimate the impact of a VAT on government debts and deficits. The tax is associated with falls in central government debt and deficits as well as expenditures as a share of GDP. There is limited evidence of increases in tax revenue and increases in stability of government spending. The choice of VAT rate is positively correlated with deficit reduction, and the effects of the tax are heterogeneous with respect to the probability of adoption of the treatment and what taxes it is replacing. 相似文献

In the mid‐1980s, financial economists began building option‐based models to value corporate investments in real assets, laying the foundation for an extensive academic literature in this area. The 1990s saw several books, numerous conferences, and many articles aimed at corporate practitioners, who began to experiment with these techniques. Now, as we approach the end of 2001, the real options approach to valuing real investments has established a solid, albeit limited, foothold in the corporate world. Based on their recent interviews with 39 individuals from 34 companies in seven different industries, the authors of this article attempt to answer the question, “How is real options being practiced, and what impact is it having in the corporate setting?” The article identifies three main corporate uses of real options—as a strategic way of thinking, an analytical valuation tool, and an organization‐wide process for evaluating, monitoring, and managing capital investments. For example, in some companies, real options is used as an input into an M&A process in which rigorous numerical analysis plays only a small role. In such cases, real options contributes as a qualitative way of thinking, with little formality either in terms of analytical rigor or organizational procedure. In other firms, real options is used in a commodity trading environment where options are clearly specified in contracts and simply need to be valued. In this case, real options functions as an analytical tool, though generally only in specialized areas of the firm and not on an organization‐wide basis. In still other companies, real options is used in a technology or R&D context where the firm's success is driven by identifying and managing potential sources of flexibility. In such cases, real options functions as an organization‐wide process with both a broad conceptual and analytical core. The companies that have shown the greatest interest in real options generally operate in industries where large investments with uncertain returns are commonplace, such as oil and gas, and life sciences. Major applications include the evaluation of exploration and production investments in oil and gas firms, generation plant investments in power firms, R&D portfolios in pharmaceutical and biotech firms, and technology investment portfolios in high‐tech firms. While the approaches to implementation are quite varied, there appears to be a common path to the successful adoption of real options. The key steps of the adoption process are: (1) conducting pilot projects; (2) getting buy‐in from senior‐level and rank‐and‐file managers; (3) codifying real options through expert working groups, specialist training, and customization; and (4) institutionalizing and integrating real options firm‐wide. After citing best practices for each of these four steps, the authors close by predicting that a “network” effect and acceptance by Wall Street will serve as catalysts for more widespread corporate use of real options. 相似文献

Housing markets are thin, and consumer search for housing is costly, time consuming, and risky. Mismatches between tenants and dwellings are common in a laissez-faire market. There are scale economies in accumulating tenants and houses and then matching them up to improve welfare. In many European countries, some housing is rent controlled and rationed by public centralized matching. Waiting time, risk in rationing, and risk in matching are costs that arise from such regulation. We show that welfare improvements over laissez-faire occur if gains from centralized matching can offset the decrease in housing quality, the possible increase in waiting times, and the risks in rationing induced by rent controls. Under regulation, there is a welfare maximizing partition of the stock into free and controlled markets; and contrary to observed practice, it is often welfare improving to set controlled rents above (not below) laissez-faire, which increases the supply offered for centralized matching and the opportunity for a better match. 相似文献

This study examines stock market gambling using a comprehensive set of investor characteristics and past portfolio performance measures. We find that retail investors overinvest in ‘lottery stocks’, stocks with gambling‐like properties. Significant portfolio underperformance is the result of gambling through lottery stocks. Investors are more likely to gamble following recent portfolio paper gains, regardless of realised performance, providing new evidence that paper gains trigger a house money effect. Investors trading greater values or holding more stocks, and older and female investors, are less likely to invest in lottery stocks. 相似文献

Illiquidity, volatile returns and lack of information are sources of the high risk that characterise the investments made by venture capitalists (VCs). Despite the importance of such investments in the contemporary business and technological environment, and the associated risk-related difficulties, little Australian research has been conducted into the decision-making processes of VCs. This study investigates both the investment process and some of the strategies used by VCs for reducing selected risks. The specific source of risk examined is information asymmetry, which is caused by lack of information on the part of the VCs, and which can lead to the added risks of adverse selection and moral hazard. Four Australian VC firms were surveyed using a comprehensive open-ended questionnaire. A manual content analysis was employed to analyse the questionnaire responses. Consistent with prior research, the Australian VCs sampled are found to employ Berger and Udell' three steps of investment: selection, contracting and monitoring. Furthermore, the semi-formal selection step of the investment process is found to consist of three distinct stages: deal sourcing, screening and evaluation. This paper applies the multivariate version of the Forbes and Rigobon (2002) contagion test, as proposed by Dungey et al. (2005a), to detect contagion effects in the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM) of the European Monetary System (EMS). Crisis and non-crisis observations are determined endogenously via a Markov-switching vector autoregression (MSVAR). We show that the MSVAR is suitable for this purpose, as it does particularly well in identifying the 11 realignments of the ERM. We examine whether Denmark’s rejection of the Maastricht Treaty and Italy’s competitiveness problems affected other EMS participants and find evidence for contagion. 相似文献
