In response to findings of abnormal stock market reactions following such dubious corporate behaviors as bribery, fraud, and the production of hazardous products, some researchers have argued that the stock market reaction is a sufficient deterrent to these behaviors so that additional regulation is not necessary. In this paper we examine stock market returns as a deterrent to dubious behavior in the production of defective automobiles. Relying on a broader range of assumptions about managerial behavior than are used in previous studies, we question the efficacy of the market as an instrument of social control. 相似文献

Estimates on the relationship between concentration and R&D effort are shown to be sensitive to problems of aggregation and of adequate measurement of R&D in small firms. While estimates from the official R&D survey of the Netherlands show a highly significant linear relationship between concentration and R&D, comparable estimates from our R&D data base prove it to be insignificant. However, at a finer level of disaggregation and when our sample is split into sectors with low and high technological opportunities, we discover evidence of a quadratic relationship in the latter and evidence of a weak linear relationship in the former. 相似文献

Using dynamic programming MacRae obtained a linear feedback law for her open loop constrained variance (OLCV) strategy. To compute the control law requires solving a two point boundary value problem. The dynamic programming formulation does not admit gradient related algorithms. This paper presents an alternative augmented Lagrangian formulation which can be solved as a deterministic constrained optimization problem. The new approach is superior because it admits gradient related algorithms plus all the algorithms which could be employed using the original approach. This article analyses the linkages among group incentive methods of compensation (broad‐based employee ownership, profit sharing and stock options), labour practices, worker assessments of workplace culture, turnover and firm performance in firms that applied to the ‘100 Best Companies to Work For in America’ competition from 2005 to 2007. Although employers with good labour practices self‐select into the 100 Best Companies firms sample, which should bias the analysis against finding strong associations among modes of compensation, labour policies and outcomes, we find that employees in the firms that use group incentive pay more extensively participate more in decisions, have greater information sharing, trust supervisors more and report a more positive workplace culture than in other companies. The combination of group incentive pay with policies that empower employees and create a positive workplace culture reduces voluntary turnover and increases employee intent to stay and raises return on equity. 相似文献
