The first Conference on Bank Structure and Competition was held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in 1963. Since that time, the Conference has served to stimulate and disseminate policy relevant research on issues affecting the financial services industry and as a forum for debating the relevant policy issues of the day. We evaluate the impact of the Conference on public policy and the banking and finance literature. We provide a qualitative argument that the Conference has helped promote policy change by showing that major financial reforms were typically discussed years earlier at the Conference. We then analyze data from the Social Science Citation Index and find that the Conference has had a strong and systematic impact on the banking and finance literature.  相似文献

Open-ended design problems have become an important component in our educational landscape (Grubbs and Strimel in J STEM Teach Educ 50(1):77–90, 2015; Jonassen et al. in J Eng Educ 95:139–151, 2006; National Research Council in Education for life and work: developing transferable knowledge and skills in the 21st Century, National Academies Press, Washington, 2012; Strimel in Technol Eng Teach 73(7):8–18, 2014a). The ability of students to confront open-ended problem scenarios, think creatively, and produce novel designs have all been lauded as necessary skills for today’s twenty first century learners (Partnership for 21st Century Skills in P21 framework definitions, Author, Washington, 2016). This emphasis on open-ended design problems in problem-based learning scenarios has been tied to workforce and higher education preparation for students (National Academy of Engineering and National Research Council in STEM integration in K–12 education: status, prospects, and an agenda for research, National Academies Press, Washington, 2014; National Research Council in Engineering in K–12 education: understanding the status and improving the prospects, National Academies Press, Washington, 2009; Strimel in Technol Eng Teach 73(5):16–24, 2014b). However, little research has been conducted to identify the impact of potentially-influential factors on student success in such open-ended design scenarios. Therefore, the researchers examined data from 706 middle school students, working in small groups, as they completed an open-ended design challenge to determine the relationships between a variety of potentially-influential factors and student performance, as measured through adaptive comparative judgment. The analysis of the data revealed several relationships, significant and not significant, between identified variables and student success on open-ended design challenges.  相似文献

Cystic fibrosis is a common genetic disease that usually presents in early childhood as a devastating disease affecting pulmonary function and at times gastrointestinal functioning and nutritional status. Variant forms of this disease have been described, which may have a delayed age of onset or a milder clinical course. Numerous genetic mutations have been described in cystic fibrosis. There are several mutations that are known to be associated with late onset disease or mild clinical disease. Research continues into these genetic mutations and various modifiers that may help to more accurately predict the final phenotypic presentation.  相似文献

Using input-output data for 1987 and 1990, this study identifies the demographic characteristics of trade-affected workers in U.S. manufacturing and service industries. Trade-affected workers are defined as employees in industries that experienced a change (positive or negative) in net total (direct and indirect) trade-related employment between 1987 and 1990. For the period 1987–1990, three industry categories were examined: (a) industries that experienced an increase in positive net trade-related employment; (b) industries that experienced a decline in positive net trade-related employment; and (c) industries that suffered net trade-related employment losses in both years yet experienced an improvement over the period. The study finds that, while manufacturing industry workers in the most favorably affected industry group (i.e., group “a”) were more likely to be highly skilled (i.e., scientists & engineers), highly educated (i.e., over four years of college education), unionized, married and white males, corresponding service sector workers were predominantly unskilled (laborers), less educated, non-unionized, young (i.e., aged 16–24) and male (black and white). Furthermore, the service sector was associated with greater mean trade-related employment and output gains and lower mean employment and output losses than was the manufacturing sector.
