Corporate collaborative activity: exploratory evidence on the determinants of vehicle choice

This exploratory study analyses the factors that affect the selection of a contract, alliance or joint venture for collaborative activity. The findings, based on a sample of 441 announcements made by UK firms, reveal that although no unequivocal support exists for either the agency- or transaction cost economics-based explanations of vehicle choice, the decision does appear to have a strategic element. In addition, the results suggest that while the three forms of inter-firm arrangement are often viewed as points on a continuum, the key decision relates to whether or not to establish a joint venture. In the light of these initial findings, future research might most usefully investigate decision-making of this type on a case-by-case basis, rather than attempting to induce pervasive explanations of the process.     

An investigation of the increasing prevalence of nonpurchase of meat by British households

The purpose of the analysis has been to investigate the determinants of the household's decisions regarding the purchase of meat in Great Britain. The approach, using a Box-Cox generalization of the ‘double hurdle’ model, has depicted the household making two choices, namely whether or not to purchase the product (the participation decision) and then, for those households which do purchase, how much to buy (the expenditure decision). The determinants considered are socioeconomic variables, such as the total expenditure of the household, market prices, characteristics of the householder (age, gender, education, type of employment) and characteristics of the household (location, presence of children, etc.). By conducting the analysis over several years of survey data (1975–1993) it is possible to investigate whether the influence of these variables has changed over time. The bulk of the empirical analysis has concerned single adult households (with or without children).     

Economic valuation of recreational fishing in Western Australia: statewide random utility modelling of fishing site choice behaviour

Allocation of fish resources is a controversial subject. This is partly because of our limited understanding of the values of fishing opportunities. This study investigates fishing site choices in Western Australia using national survey data covering eight major fishing regions and forty‐eight fishing sites. We estimate a random utility model (RUM) of site choice with a supporting negative binomial model of angler‐specific expected catch rates. Value estimates for fish types, fishing site attribute changes and access values are presented and discussed.     

Airline alliances: cooperating to compete?

This paper examines the formation of alliances in the contemporary airline industry, comparing this with developments in business collaboration in industry generally. It identifies the main forces driving airlines into alliances, before considering the strategies that airlines are adopting in marketing joint services, and the policies that governments are pursuing in relation to the impact of alliances on the intensity of competition. One of the main arguments advanced is that alliances increase competition in through-markets via hubs, and that they can be expected to have pro-competitive effects in narrowing price-cost margins on long-haul services, something that can be traded against any lessening of competition in short-haul hub-to-hub markets.     

CONSUMERS‘ DECISIONS WHETHER OR NOT TO PURCHASE MEAT: A DOUBLE HURDLE ANALYSIS OF SINGLE ADULT HOUSEHOLDS

Limited dependent variable models are employed to determine factors influencing UK household meat purchase behaviour. The standard Tobit approach is rejected. “Double hurdle” models, specifically the Cragg and Complete Dominance versions, provide a better representation of the factors that influence the separate decisions of participation and expenditure levels. Key results show that employment class and adult gender are significant determinants of participation but not expenditure; income affects both decisions but in opposite directions; education affects expenditure alone.     

Devaluation,long-term contracts and rational expectations

This paper considers the effects of devaluation and expected devaluation on output, prices and foreign exchange reserves in a small open economy with overlapping two period wage contracts and rational expectations. A devaluation has an expansionary effect on output provided it is unanticipated by at least some contracts when it occurs. Expected devaluations, however, have no effect on prices until they take place. If a devaluation is expected, but fails to take place, output is reduced. Reserves increase in response to all devaluations; but the expectation of a devaluation causes a loss of reserves prior to its expected date.

Estimating the incidence of wrongdoing and whistle-blowing: Results of a study using randomized response technique

Student cheating and reporting of that cheating represents one form of organizational wrong-doing and subsequent whistle-blowing, in the context of an academic organization. Previous research has been hampered by a lack of information concerning the validity of survey responses estimating the incidence of organizational wrongdoing and whistle-blowing. An innovative method, the Randomized Response Technique (RRT), was used here to assess the validity of reported incidences of wrongdoing and whistle-blowing. Surprisingly, our findings show that estimates of these incidences did not vary significantly when RRT questionnaire results were compared to those obtained from standard surveys. In fact, a large number of business undergraduates admitted cheating while only a small percentage reported peers' cheating when they observed it. These results should be sobering for managers and their implications are considered in some detail.Brian K.
