Recent trade models determine the equilibrium distribution of firm‐level efficiency endogenously and show that freer trade shifts the distribution towards higher average productivity because of entry and exit of firms. These models ignore the possibility that freer trade also alters the firm‐size distribution via international firm migration (offshoring); firms must, by assumption, produce in their “birth nation.” We show that when firms are allowed to switch locations, new productivity effects arise. Freer trade induces the most efficient small‐nation firms to move to the large nation. The large country gets an “extra helping” of the most efficient firms while the small nation's firm‐size distribution is truncated on both ends. This reinforces the large‐nation productivity gain while reducing or even reversing the small‐nation productivity gain. The small nation is nevertheless better off allowing firm migration. 相似文献

To be competitive in today's increasingly complex and rapidly changing envi‐ronment, organizations must retain personnel and promote the well‐being of employees. We examine the relationship of both support provided to person‐nel and job quality with employee health and turnover intentions among a sample of 450 military personnel. We analyze the role of consumer expectations in a Hotelling model of price competition when products exhibit network effects.
Expectations can be strong (stubborn), weak (price-sensitive) or partially stubborn (a mix of weak and strong). As a rule,
the price-sensitivity of demand declines when expectations are more stubborn. An increase of stubbornness (i) increases (decreases)
the parameter region with a unique duopoly equilibrium (multiple equilibria), (ii) reduces competition, (iii) reduces the
conflict between consumer and social preferences for de facto standardization, and (iv) reduces the misalignment between consumer

Behavioral economics (BE) examines the implications for decision-making when actors suffer from biases documented in the psychological
literature. This article considers how such biases affect regulatory decisions. The article posits a simple model of a regulator
who serves as an agent to a political overseer. The regulator chooses a policy that accounts for the rewards she receives
from the political overseer—whose optimal policy is assumed to maximize short-run outputs that garner political support, rather
than long-term welfare outcomes—and the weight the regulator puts on the optimal long run policy. Flawed heuristics and myopia
are likely to lead regulators to adopt policies closer to the preferences of political overseers than they would otherwise.
The incentive structure for regulators is likely to reward those who adopt politically expedient policies, either intentionally
(due to a desire to please the political overseer) or accidentally (due to bounded rationality). The article urges that careful
thought be given to calls for greater state intervention, especially when those calls seek to correct firm biases. The article
proposes measures that focus rewards to regulators on outcomes rather than outputs as a way to help ameliorate regulatory

This paper analyzes the economic and investment implications of a series of climate mitigation scenarios, characterized by different levels of ambition for long-term stabilization goals and transitional pathways. Results indicate that although milder climate objectives can be achieved at moderate costs, stringent stabilization paths, compatible with the 2°C target, might require significant economic resources. Innovation and technology are shown to be able to mitigate, but not structurally alter, this trade-off. Technologies that allow capturing CO2 from the atmosphere are shown to be important for expanding the feasibility space of stringent climate policies, though only if deployed at a scale which would represent a tremendous challenge. In general, the analysis indicates that the timing of mitigation is an important factor of cost containment, with early action being desirable. It also elaborates on the set of mitigation strategies and policies that would be required to achieve climate protection at maximum efficiency. 相似文献

There has been much debate regarding the electoral strategy adopted by New Labour in the lead-up to and then during their time in government. This paper addresses the issue from the perspective of left/right and liberal/authoritarian considerations by examining data on individual attitudes from the British Social Attitudes survey between 1986 and 2009. The analysis indicates that New Labour’s move towards the right on economic and public policy was the main driver towards attracting new centrist voters and could thus be labelled ‘broadly’ populist. The move towards a tougher stance on law and order was more ‘narrowly’ populist in that it was used more to minimise the reduction in support from Labour’s traditional base on the left than to attract new votes. The evidence presented provides support for an expressive theory of voting in that law and order policy was arguably used to counter alienation amongst traditional, left-wing Labour supporters. 相似文献
