Baltic Dry Index (BDI) is often included in the iron ore spot price. Iron ore market experienced a transition in pricing mechanism from the annual negotiated price to the one based on spot market price in 2008/2009. This paper investigates the dynamics of and the interactions between BDI and iron ore spot price in the regime of the new pricing mechanism. In addition to controlled variables, we find significant spillover interactions between BDI and the iron ore market. We also detect mean-reversion movement in the iron ore market, signalling certain inefficiency in the market pricing.  相似文献

The uprising and military confrontation in Libya that began in February 2011 has led to a disruption of the country’s gas exports to Europe. An analysis of how Europe has compensated for these missing gas volumes shows that the disruption has not affected security of supply. The idea that people invest in health capital is an essential part of models of the demand for health, but the investment motives behind health decision are often obscured by other factors. This empirical paper investigates the demand for adult preventive medical care, where the investment motives are relatively clear cut. Several important results demonstrate the usefulness of the approach. First, the analysis finds that annual use of two preventive services decreases with age. Although not the only plausible explanation, the results are consistent with individuals shortens over the lifecycle. Second, schooling is found to be an important determinant of demand, with the more educated much more likely to use the services. Neither lifecycle nor schooling effects are consistently found in studies of the demand for culture care. Finally, the empirical analysis also provides additional evidence on the responsiveness of the demand for preventive care to change in insurance coverage, an important issue for health policy.  相似文献

Government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) and quasi-autonomous non-governmental organizations (quangos) comprise a powerful organizational sector that has been criticized for its lack of accountability to governments and their citizens. These organizations are established to serve the public as a whole by targeting the needs of particular groups or fulfilling specific functions. Often they use practices adopted from the business sector, and sometimes they enter the marketplace as profit-making enterprises. In light of the contribution of GSE Fannie Mae to the 2008 world economic crisis, the impact of this sector on effective democratic government bears further examination. In this article, I present a systems model that suggests how researchers might comprehensively assess the accountability of organizations in this sector, here termed the “gray sector,” with respect to their government missions. I focus on four systems dimensions: mission, organizational design, organizational outcomes, and the information feedback process. Organizational design and the nature of the sector population are cited as emerging issues of particular importance.  相似文献

In a companion paper, “Gains from Manipulating Social Choice Rules,” we analyzed the incentive to manipulate by considering the maximum number of ranks someone can gain in their preference ordering by manipulation. This paper treats the number of ranks someone else can lose due to manipulation. We find large classes of rules where that loss is very large, a few rules where the loss can be significantly smaller, and even some rules where no one ever loses—even though manipulation will take place.  相似文献

The National Geographic Society Center for Sustainable Destinations Stewardship Scorecards for 2003 and 2006 compared ratings by “experts” for 33 World Heritage Site destinations. Nine (27.3%) improved by four or more points and six (18.2%) decreased by four or more points in the three years. In 2006, local stakeholders rated these World Heritage destinations using the same criteria as the experts. Stakeholders rated six destinations (18.2%) lower and almost half of the 33 destinations (48.8%) increased by five or more points. A moderate positive correlation was determined between the ratings of the experts and stakeholders. Comments by experts and stakeholders related to each of the scorecard criterion measures were analyzed. ANOVA and t-test were performed to examine the six stakeholder categories ratings for each of the six criteria and the results are presented. The assumptions and limitations of the survey methodology are discussed along with recommendations for improving the Destination Stewardship Scorecard Survey.  相似文献
