In contemporary workplaces, urgency is symbolic of workers' experience of time as accelerated, and often associated with use of digital technologies. Yet we know little about how urgency is constructed at work, including the agentic roles of technology and other materialities. Based on interviews with railway workers, we extend Rosa's conceptualisation of temporal junctures to explain how urgency as a temporal framing is sociomaterially constituted, sustained and challenged across and between workers and their managers, particularly through smartphone-use. Our analysis extends existing thinking on temporality at work by demonstrating how urgency narratives at sociomaterially complex configurations of temporal junctures shield workers, managers and the organisation against the temporal fragility of the rail infrastructure, such that each narration of urgency carries forward an illusion of temporal control. 相似文献

We reflect on the issues which emerged from an interdisciplinary workshop held under the aegis of the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS), Lancaster University in April 2006 about the Knowledge-Based Economy (KBE). The workshop addressed the question: What creates or constitutes consumer vulnerability in the KBE within the context of financial services? Discussion revolved around four themes: Firstly, setting debates about KBE in a historical context; secondly, identifying the disciplinary perspective for constructing the consumer (e.g., economic, legal); thirdly defining vulnerability without encompassing more than 70% of the population; and finally evaluating the government’s role in consumer welfare and education in the KBE. Egypt, a less affluent, predominantly Muslim country, suffers from numerous forms of environmental pollution, some severe.
This study investigates pro-environmental behaviors of citizens in Cairo, Egypt’s largest metropolis, and studies the relationship
between pro-environmental behavior and demographic variables, beliefs, values, and religiosity. Analysis shows that three
types of pro-environmental behavior are present: Public Sphere, Private Sphere, and Activist Behavior, with the latter occurring
less frequently. Importantly, the study identifies an ecocentric value among respondents which is correlated with Public Sphere
Behavior. It also confirms earlier research that characterized Egyptians’ perceptions of the environment as being set in the
context of health and cleanliness. Religious teachings and religiosity are shown to be associated with pro-environmental behavior,

The paper reports a longitudinal study of the post‐pregnancy work outcomes for full‐time working women who were pregnant with their first baby. Regression analyses revealed that women who did not return to work as intended were differentiated from those who did return to work by the amount of planning they had done in pregnancy, as well as having lower pre‐natal income and less anti‐cipated support within the workplace. Almost one third of those who returned to work part‐time reported reduced job status. The study shows the importance of workplace planning and support in return to work after maternity leave. 相似文献

We investigate the influence of unanticipated prolonged disruption on effective teaching, student engagement and student satisfaction during campus lockdown due to COVID-19. Qualitative comments provided by undergraduate business students in the university end-of-semester survey were analysed using a variety of methods, including sentiment analysis. Our findings indicate that effective teaching through the characteristics of the instructor, can lead to enhanced student engagement and higher levels of student satisfaction in an emergency remote teaching environment. Our findings highlight the critical role of the instructor in providing cognitive and affective support to students, along with clear communication, during times of substantial change. 相似文献
