Abstract: This paper examines investors' anticipation and subsequent interpretations of asset write‐downs accompanying segment divestitures. Examining long‐window returns cumulated over the two years preceding the year of divestiture, we hypothesize and find that investors anticipate write‐downs of segment operating assets before divestiture and recognition occurs, with anticipation conditional on the timeliness of the write‐down and prior disclosure of the segments' operating results under segment reporting rules. Short‐window returns cumulated over the three days surrounding the announcement of the divestiture confirm that investor interpretations of asset write‐downs are similarly contingent on write‐down timeliness and prior disclosure. 相似文献

We develop a farm household model to analyze price responses of farm households. This model incorporates various types of transaction costs as well as labor heterogeneity. Nonproportional variable transaction costs or labor heterogeneity imply that production and consumption decisions become nonseparable, even when the household buys or sells labor. An empirical model is estimated using data from Midwest Poland. The results show that nonproportional variable transaction costs and labor heterogeneity significantly influence household behavior. Will Enlargement Gridlock CAP Reforms? a Political Economy Perspective This article highlights the role of political institutions in predicting further reforms of the CAP We argue that the institutional setup of the political decision-making process has given rise to levels of farm support that neither represent the political will of the majority of national governments nor of the Commission. We further argue that, in theory, this gap will widen due to the need to accommodate the diverse preferences of the New Member States. In practice, however, the institutional structure of CAP decision-making will give rise to a gridlock in the Council, impeding further reforms. We argue that one possible route to further reform is via a coalition of national governments and the Commission, harnessing future WTO negotiations to break the gridlock and force the Agricultural Council to accept further reforms. Decoupling will become an internal driver of further reform because it makes transfers transparent and politically visible, thus casting doubt on the legitimacy of payments to large farms and wealthy farmers. We thus expect the CAP's rationale to shift further in the direction of multifunctionality and public-good type benefits. Enlargement at most poses a further obstacle to reform but will not halt the process of making the CAP more effective, efficient and more equitable. In der Praxis jedoch wird die institutionelle Struktur der Entscheidungsfindung in der GAP für eine Blockade im Ministerrat sorgen und somit weitere Reformen behindern. Wir argumentieren, dass ein gangbarer Weg zu weiteren Reformen über eine Koalition nationaler Regierungen mit der Kommission fiihrt, welche die Blockade mit Hilfe der zukünftigen WTO-Verhandiungen bricht und den Agrarministerrat zwingt, weitere Reformen zu akzeptieren. Die Entkopplung wird sich als wichtige Triebfeder für weitere Reformen erweisen, da sie Transferleistungen transparent und politisch sichtbar macht und so die Legitimität von Zahlungen an großs“e landwirtschaftliche Betriebe und wohlhabende Landwirte in Frage stellt, Somit erwarten wir, dass sich die Begründung der GAP mehr in die Richtung von Multifunktionalität und Bereitstellung öffentlicher Güter entwickeln wird. In the present study, we examine a model which seeks to specify the process through which work-family supportive organizations and supervisors influence important organizational outcomes, including commitment and performance. Findings indicated that family-supportive organization perceptions are best conceptualized as influencing family-supportive supervisor behaviors, which in turn influence subordinate self-efficacy, subordinate affective commitment to the organization and subordinate perceptions of supervisor work effort. Subordinate self-efficacy and affective commitment were also both found to independently mediate the relationship between family-supportive supervisor behaviors and self-rated performance. Interestingly, the model functioned similarly for employees with and without dependent care responsibilities, indicating that work-family policies and support are important for all employees, regardless of their familial status. Theoretical and practical implications, limitations and future research directions are discussed. 相似文献

Bilateral investment treaties (BITs) and investor-state dispute settlements (ISDS) have become highly controversial. The authors review the evidence and discuss the pros and cons of BITs and other investment agreements. Many observers are concerned that Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) regulations on investment protection could be abused by international corporations to obtain unjustifi ed compensation from EU member states. These concerns are to some extent legitimate and should be considered more seriously in the EU negotiation strategy. International investment agreements (IIA) are necessary when host countries of FDI do not have reliable and independent judicial systems. To avoid abuse and to account for the increasing role of global production chains, agreements require more precise defi nitions, and ISDS needs to be more transparent and independent. With the EU developing its own new approach independently (and differently) from the one taken in the past by its member states, the current negotiations of “mega-regionals”, as well as the fi rst standalone EU IIA with China, offer the unique possibility to answer current critique around international investment law. Is there, in the current documents, an IIA2.0 that strengthens the right to regulate and holds up high protection standards for investors? The exclusion of ISDS from TTIP negotiations risks missing a unique chance to improve the current less than perfect international investment regime. 相似文献

The impact from corporate business activities on the natural environment and society at large has been in focus for quite some time. The focus has often been on corporate environmental sustainability initiatives reflecting industry's response to concerns expressed by key stakeholders as well as the potential influence on the bottom line and the competitive situation. Much less investigated is the extent to which management itself perceives that corporate environmental initiatives actually lead to positive results. This is the very focus of this research, which is based on data collected by identical surveys of industrial companies in Denmark over a number of years. The results indicate a slightly increasing involvement over time, but also that the level of results achieved is lower than the level of initiatives taken. That is, the reactive attitude reported previously still seems to be prevailing. The results also seem to indicate that the size of the company may have a negative influence in some situations, since smaller companies seems to be better at achieving results compared with medium sized companies.
