Factors influencing cargo airlines’ choice of airport: An international survey

This paper identifies and evaluates the myriad of factors that influence the choice of airport by freighter-operating airlines. The findings are presented from an international postal survey of airlines operating freighter aircraft on a scheduled non-integrated basis. A number of factors such as night curfews, freight forwarders and airport charges are found to be influential and these are examined against a number of dependent variables such as the airline's home region and operational patterns in order to identify key variations.     

Policy issues and planning of UK regional airports

The principal motivation for this paper is to examine the policy issues for UK regional airports within the air transport system with particular reference to airport airline relationships. The geography of airline route networks is considered a key factor that determines location of the pressure for infrastructure development. Regional airports policy is considered in this context. The problems of the resultant concentration of air traffic has largely been ignored up until now and so this paper seeks highlight the issues this presents to policy makers. The paper reviews the changing regional airport ownership patterns and examines a range of implications. It then explores the policy implications for the future regulation and development of the air transport system. The authors contend that regulation and the planning system are the only two remaining policy levers for government to guide privately owned airlines, privately owned airports and commercialised airports towards national policy goals.     

An Analysis of Corporate Social Responsibility at Credit Line: A Narrative Approach

This article presents the results of an inductive, interpretive case study. We have adopted a narrative approach to the analysis of organizational processes in order to explore how individuals in a financial institution dealt with relatively novel issues of corporate social responsibility (CSR). The narratives that we reconstruct, which we label ‚idealism and altruism’, ‚economics and expedience’ and ‚ignorance and cynicism’ illustrate how people in the specific organizational context of a bank (‚Credit Line’¹) sought to cope with an attempt at narrative imposition. In particular, our work exemplifies how people in organizations draw on shared discursive resources in order to make sense of themselves and their organizations. We illustrate how many people within the bank found it hard to integrate the normative case for CSR with their version of a narrative identity which had, and continued to be, centred on economic imperatives for new initiatives. Our article demonstrates both the value of the analysis of shared narratives, and represents an attempt to deal adequately with the polyphony of organizational voices, in case studies of CSR. His research interests include ethnographic and narrative approaches to organizational identity in both public and private sector organizations. Andrew D. Brown took his MA at Christ Church, Oxford, and his M.Sc and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Sheffield. He held faculty positions at Manchester Business School, the University of Nottingham and the University of Cambridge, before taking up a Chair in Organization Studies at the University of Bath. His principal research interests are centred on issues of sensemaking, narrative and identity. He has published work in a range of scholarly journals, including Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management Studies, and Organization Studies.
