Agency theory contends that shareholder interests require protection by separation of the roles of board chair and chief executive officer (CEO). Duality (CEO also chairman of the board) increases the likelihood of the CEO entrenchment by reducing board monitoring effectiveness. Stewardship theory argues that shareholder interests are maximized by having the dual CEOs. According to stewardship theory, firms with dual CEOs have some major advantages over their counterparts. Such CEOs establish strong leadership and provide better strategic directions for the firm. Consequently, shareholders benefit form dual CEOs. Evidence on the relationship between dual CEO and firm performance is mixed. While some studies found that there is a positive relationship between two variables, others found an inverse relationship between two. This study attempts to shed some light on this issue. Results from the study indicate that there is a statistically significantly positive relationship between dual CEO and the firm's size, the number of insider director, and the percentage of shares held by the control shareholders. Results from this study indicated that there is no significant relationship between the CEO duality and financial performance in the short run. However, the firms with dual CEO, on average, perform better than their counterparts in the long run.  相似文献

Using extensive hand‐collected data on granted patents, we examine the effect of institutional blockholder monitoring on corporate innovation in Korea. Specifically, we focus on the relation between institutional blockholding and firm innovation. We find that institutional blockholders positively influence firm innovation and that this positive effect is driven primarily by foreign institutional blockholders, particularly when they engage in passive monitoring. The Korean market features limited participation by shareholders and pressure‐sensitive domestic institutions. Thus, we demonstrate the importance of corporate governance for firm innovation in emerging markets, where corporate innovation is increasingly important for long‐term economic growth, competitiveness, and value creation.  相似文献

Australian public universities have been under the influence of a corporate management culture since the 1980s. Driven by pressures for more accounting and accountability, its characteristics have variously been described as being in tension with the traditional collegial and autonomous management culture, threatening its demise. This study applies a multi-theoretical lens to recognize the interests of academics as important stakeholders and critically analyses the existing literature to determine the current status of both cultures within Australian public universities. A series of interviews with a number of vice chancellors and other senior management staff complement and provide a management perspective to the analysis. The results suggest that amidst a shift toward a corporate culture, aspects of collegial and autonomous practices continue to exist in various degrees among universities due to different levels of influencing forces on its operating environment. A quasi-management approach exists with continued tensions between both cultures, compromising their expected outcomes. Universities are attempting to narrow this tension gap. An analysis of the quasi-management approach further reveals that a right balance between both cultures has potential to serve as an effective management model under a multi-theoretical platform. The findings provide avenues for further research to examine this potential.  相似文献

The notion of the quality of life is about a finite set of measurable attributes that can be weighted by some metric. The quality of life has subjective as well as objective dimensions. Single dimension measures now are recognized as too narrow to fully capture differences in the quality of life. Based upon data envelopment analysis (DEA), the current paper demonstrates how to develop a multidimensional measure to characterize the quality of life and identify its best-practice frontier which balances work and family life and judges practical comfort. Benchmarks are introduced into DEA models to implicitly reflect tradeoff information on quality-of-life related factors and to incorporate evaluation standards. A method is proposed to determine the unique best quality-of-life scale target. Critical quality-of-life factors are identified in a multidimensional construct. Fortune magazine's choice of the 20 best cities—15 domestic and five international—is investigated.  相似文献

This paper looks at what is currently known about who uses the new technologies and how they use them. It also sets out the current information available about the use of these technologies by the not‐for‐profit sector as a whole. The final section sets out the implications of these new technologies for not‐for‐profit marketers and the potential benefits for organisations that embrace and develop the new technologies. While the data presented focuses on the UK, the implications for not‐for‐profit marketing are relevant wherever the penetration in these technologies is high. Structural equation modeling, often referred to as SEM, is a well-established, covariance-based multivariate method used in Human Resource Development (HRD) quantitative research. In some research contexts, however, the rigorous assumptions associated with covariance-based SEM (CB-SEM) limit applications of the method. An emergent complementary SEM approach, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), is a variance-based SEM method that provides valid solutions and overcomes several limitations associated with CB-SEM. Despite PLS-SEM's increasing popularity in many social sciences disciplines, the method has yet to gain traction in the field of HRD. An accessible overview of the method, including potential advantages for HRD research and extant methodological advancements, is provided in this article with the goal of encouraging productive dialogue in the field of HRD surrounding the PLS-SEM approach. We present an emergent analytical tool for quantitative HRD research, offer practical guidelines for researchers to consider when selecting a SEM method, and clarify assessment stages and up-to-date evaluation criteria through an illustrative example.  相似文献

The current paper explores a transformative approach to leadership that integrates with a view of analog role-playing games (RPGs) as a system for human interaction, aiming to leverage these experiences and foster collective creative leadership. In the face of urgent global challenges, traditional leadership models prove inadequate, necessitating a shift in understanding leadership as a process of adaptive change among human groups. Drawing on phenomenology, relational sociology and constructivist perspectives, I advocate for a conceptualization of leadership as a socially constructed, meaning-making endeavor mutually embedded within and generating cultural context. I emphasize the essential role of collective cultural approaches and propose a co-creative education process that incorporates play and creativity for effective leadership development. Then, I delve further into the intersection of leadership and play, highlighting the potential of RPGs in facilitating transformative, collective creativity. The proposed model views RPGs as Leadership-As-Practice Development (LAPD) and explores how analog RPGs can be employed as dynamic platforms for leadership learning, identity development, team-building, and symbolic storytelling processes.  相似文献

We examine the out of sample performance of country equity asset allocation strategies between January 1985 and February 2000 that use conditional versions of international asset pricing models to forecast expected returns. We find that strategies that use conditional asset pricing models tend not to outperform a strategy that uses the sample mean to forecast expected returns. We find that this result is fairly robust across different levels of risk aversion, whether riskless lending is available or not, and when we impose upper bound constraints.  相似文献

This paper describes the results of a feasibility study to develop a national Innovation Scoreboard to measure and track the innovative performance of companies in the UK. It begins with a review of potential technological, market and financial indicators of innovation, and using data in the public domain, develops a trial Innovation Scoreboard based on 40 firms from five different sectors. The preliminary findings suggest that product announcements made in the specialist press may be a viable indicator of innovation at the level of the firm. Specifically, the evidence suggests that product announcements represent a useful measure of innovative output, which combined with expenditure on research and development provide a measure of research efficiency. This measure of research efficiency is shown to be associated with higher market to book values.  相似文献
