This paper attempts to reconcile and extend the debate in South Africa as to whether trade was liberalised in the nineties. The core studies in the debate are examined with a view to effecting their reconciliation. In particular the limitations of effective rates of protection as reflective of the stance of trade policy are explained and suggestions made for their use by policymakers. The paper concludes by suggesting that reliance on a single indicator such as effective rates of protection should be avoided.  相似文献

We use linked data for 13 991 employees and 1494 workplaces to analyse the incidence of employer‐provided training in Australia. We find potential experience, current job tenure, low education levels, skilled vocational training and part‐time or fixed‐term employment status are all associated with a lower probability of recent training. In contrast to studies for other countries, we find no evidence of discrimination on the basis of demographic characteristics in the provision of this job‐related training. Finally, and in support of recent non‐competitive training models, higher levels of wage compression are found to be positively related to a greater incidence of employee training.  相似文献

This case concerns the real operations of a café in a small town in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is a second location of a theme restaurant, with the first location successfully operating for a number of years. The owner of the first location, and senior partner of the second café, is available for advice but does not participate in the day‐to‐day operations of the second location; there are two junior partners who run the business. The focus is on the financial statements generated by an external bookkeeping service. The income statement reports a significant loss, and some of the accounts on the balance sheet and income statement do not make sense for this type of business. Simple ratio and variance analysis provides information for students to determine where problems lie. The case presents a good opportunity for students who have a basic understanding of financial statements to read a set of real statements generated by a bookkeeping service. Not all transactions are logical for a small café, although the financial information is from a real café in operation. The case also contains industry information on the operations of small food and drinking businesses located in Nova Scotia.  相似文献

Approximately five million children under the age of 18 will eventually die from smoking‐related disease. However, antismoking advertisements directed to adolescents appear to be reducing the prevalence of smoking among youth. The reported study extends prior research using an experiment over time (N= 565) to test the influence of individual factors (grade level, gender, and ethnicity) on the effectiveness of two types of message content in antismoking advertisements. Predictor variables from prior research, such as beliefs about smoking and family and peer smoking, were included as covariates in the analysis. As expected, effectiveness was influenced by individual factors. Long‐term health content was more effective among nonwhites, males, and high school students, while short‐term content appeared to work better among junior high males.  相似文献

A sample of 252 females was queried to determine the differences in fashion awareness. The study aimed to assess the fashion awareness of females as affected by the city of residence, by their reference to different selected fashion magazines, and the extent of fashion awareness existing among women based on the following variables: age, marital status, education, number of dependent children in the family, income, and courses taken relating to fashion. The study determined that fashion awareness of the participants was affected by fashion reading media, age, marital status, education, income, and courses taken relating to fashion. Fashion awareness was not affected by city size or number of dependent children in the family.  相似文献
