Optimal designs for models with block-block resp. treatment-treatment correlations

Summary In this paper we study optimal designs assuming two special covariance structures of the observations, namely that the covariance between the observations depends only on the blocks resp. the treatments. We show that the weighted least squares estimator equals the ordinary least squares estimator. Then we prove that block-block correlations resp. treatment-treatment correlations do not have any influence on the A- and MV-optimality resp. A-optimality. For the study of the MV-optimality in the case of treatment-treatment correlations we use the idea of invariance to find optimal C-matrices.

Even though governments usually enjoy favourable borrowing conditions, the current financial system in Europe grants special privileges to government debt. This involves capital requirements in banking regulation, ECB policies, intergovernmental guarantees, etc. The paper gives a short outline of the privileges, discusses their justification and highlights problems.

Love and taxes – and matching institutions

Abstract Income disparities and the intra‐family redistribution implied by a marriage may induce a high‐income earner to abstain from marrying a low‐income earner even though they would be a perfect match emotionally. Redistributive income taxation eases this problem, and the design of marriage matching institutions interacts with this role of redistributive taxation. Matching institutions that ensure that people largely from the same income groups meet each other can substitute for redistribution. Matching across income groups that focuses on emotional quality or preference congruence of the match may increase the efficiency‐enhancing role of taxation.
