On employment,wage and risk sharing in labor contracts

This note studies risk sharing in labor contracts when the price of the firm's product is uncertain. It demonstrates that if the firm adjusts employment at its own discretion, then the wage should not in general be constant, but should be constant only if the production function is of the Cobb-Douglas type.     

On optimal wage indexation when shocks are real

This note studies the optimal degree of wage indexation in the presence of real shocks. Contrary to what is indicated in the literature, it is demonstrated that the optimal degree of indexation is not limited to (0;1) but may take any value in (-∞;∞).     

Commodity prices and fiscal policy design: Procyclical despite a rule

Recent studies offer evidence of reduced fiscal procyclicality to commodity price changes in resource‐rich countries—a feature commonly attributed to the adoption of fiscal policy rules. We revisit this issue and find that, by controlling for global activity shocks while allowing for time‐varying changes in both fiscal policy and the volatility of shocks, this finding does not hold. To show this we develop a time‐varying dynamic factor model, allowing for a multiple of shocks, stochastic volatility and time‐varying parameters, and estimate it on data for Norway, whose handling of resource wealth is often cited as exemplary.

Innovative international strategies

The analysis of practitioners’ narratives in four industries—cables and wires, paint, footwear chocolate, and sugar confectionery—shows that innovative international strategies drive the dynamics of international competition. The four industry case studies suggest an empirical classification of innovative international strategies based on four main dimensions: nature of the firm’s competitive advantage, process of internationalization, segment scope, and level of coordination across borders. From these dimensions derive six types of innovative international strategies that change the rules of competition. The findings support a proactive view of economic development and strategic management. This framework can inspire decision makers in charge of crafting consistent and effective international strategies, as it shows that strategic choice can transform industry structure.
