To aid American union practitioners in the selection of winnable worksites in unionization elections, we identified predictors of union interest from psychological perspectives that bear on the character of American workers. Using perceived union instrumentality as a standard to determine the prediction status of new psychological predictors of union interest, a cognitive version of self-enhancement (overconfidence in rating one??s skills and abilities) was found to predict interest above and beyond perceived instrumentality in a sample of American nonunion employees (N?=?452), controlling for social desirability, demographic and structural predictors, and other hypothesized predictors in a six-step hierarchical regression equation. Implications for selecting winnable election worksites and for predicting psychological aspects of union interest are discussed. 相似文献

Liability dollarization,exchange market pressure and fear of floating: empirical evidence for Turkey
US and British unemployment rates for non–white males and females are compared over the period 1970–1998. Whereas US rates remained fairly steady, there was a marked increase in British non–white unemployment rates. The reasons for this poor performance, relative to the good performance of US non–whites are explored. It is shown that non–white unemployment behaves in different ways across the two countries. For example, British rates rise faster in a recession than white rates, whereas US rates appear not to follow this British hypercyclical pattern. 相似文献

- Donor attrition is costing charities a fortune. Previous research has examined the relative importance of the antecedents to donor loyalty versus lapsing. This study qualitatively builds on this. It reports the results of workshops and interviews that took lapsers and donors back through their donor and lapser journeys. It drills down into and unpacks their experiences—inclusive of the (previously undocumented) lapsing experience itself. It reveals striking similarities between the cancellation of a direct debit and other more conventional purchase decisions. Most worryingly, it seems that most people stop supporting a given charity because they had never really had any loyalty to it in the first place. Charities are not meeting people's needs as donors. There is a distinct lack of understanding between charities and their donors, and donors are lapsing because charities give them little reason to stay. The authors conclude with practical recommendations for the management of attrition.

A review is presented showing the increasing power of multiple grocery retailers from which an argument is developed questioning whether consumers perceive packaged grocery product fields in terms of brands versus own labels versus generics. Consumers’ perceptions of risk are reduced through information search and it is thought that the different search activities between the high and low risk perceivers may explain perceptions of the competitive structure of product fields. For six packaged grocery fields, separately, qualitative research was undertaken to elicit the dimensions consumers use to evaluate competing items. Data was then collected from 829 householders and was subsequently subjected to cluster analysis. Consumers’ perceptions of the competitive structure of product fields differed from marketers’ expectations and brands were always perceived as being distinct from retailer labels. The result did not appear to be influenced by consumers’ perceptions of risk. Reasons for the result are considered, and managerial implications explored. 相似文献

This paper focuses on the way managers perceive their competitive environment. Within a cognitive perspective it discusses why they might group similar competitors and considers whether they are attentive to all competing firms. The literature on similarity of perceptions between managers is reviewed. Interviews amongst managers in the North Sea off‐shore oil pumps industry revealed that they made sense of competition through a categorization process. None perceived the industry in the objective manner as economists suggest. Different perceptions as to the nature of competitions were found between managers, but more homogeneous perceptions were seen between managers in the same firm than between different firms. 相似文献

As Japan has moved abreast of the United States in the export capability of high-technology products, the competition between the two countries has intensified not only in private sector R&D but also in terms of increased governmental assistance and protectionist measures. This increased competition can be seen in the three electronics industry cases of semiconductors, computers, and robotics, and is specifically illustrated by Japan's VLSI and fifth generation computer projects and the FBI-IBM sting operation in Silicon Valley.
