THE IMPACT OF HEALTH ON POVERTY: EVIDENCE FROM THE SOUTH AFRICAN INTEGRATED FAMILY SURVEY

This paper examines the impact of health status on poverty status, accounting for the endogeneity of health status. Using exogenous measures of health status from the South African Integrated Health Survey, we instrument for health status while allowing for covariation among the unobservables influencing both health and household poverty status. Health status, as captured by the body mass index, is shown to strongly influence poverty status. Households that contain more unhealthy individuals are 60 per cent more likely to be income poor than households that contain fewer unhealthy individuals, and this finding appears invariant to the choice of poverty line.     

WATER RESOURCES AND DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION

Water is indispensible because it is essential to sustain life, but the ease with which this basic requirement is obtained varies with the prevailing climatic conditions and the economic status of the area concerned. In this paper the relationship between the management of water resources and the needs of the domestic consumer is discussed.

This paper is a report of an international symposium in Copenhagen on the effects of indoor climate on human comfort, performance and health.     

THERMAL COMFORT IN THE HOME

The thermal conditions required for comfort in the indoor environment have stimulated much research. Results of this research have both elucidated the physiological mechanisms which determine what conditions are comfortable as well as defining the combinations of physical variables which constitute these. This paper discusses these two aspects of thermal comfort in relation to the home environment     

After Dawson

At the first residential conference of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, which was held at St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, in September 1983, Mr Stewart Bates, QC, spoke on the implications of the decision of the House of Lords in the case of W. T. Ramsay Ltd v CIR. A report of those proceedings was held over until the decision of the House of Lords in the case of Furniss, v Dawson was known. The following report is based upon Mr Bates' address and the comments of Mr Stephen Oliver, QC, Mr John Avery Jones and Mr Adrian Shipwright who spoke at a lunchtime seminar convened by the IFS on 9 March 1984 to consider the decision in Furniss v Dawson.
