Extant research emphasizes that consumers use mass customization toolkits to create products they consider to be unique, and that perceived uniqueness is an important part of customer value. This research investigates the conditions of the customer's quest for uniqueness. It is motivated by the observation that decisions are often driven by others’ choices and a desire to fit in, rather than to be distinct. We hypothesize that consumers are more inclined to choose uniqueness for hedonic product attributes but tend toward conformity in utilitarian attributes, and that consumers’ need for uniqueness and product involvement moderate the choice. In a series of experiments, we find support for most hypotheses. We introduce conformity as a driver of choice behavior in mass customization toolkits and suggest that mass customization can best be seen as enabling consumers’ preferred mix of uniqueness and conformity. Our results also inform managerial practice, highlighting that mass customization toolkits should consider customers’ uniqueness and conformity requirements. We suggest reducing the number of utilitarian options while increasing the variety for hedonic attributes.  相似文献

We propose that the failure to adopt an idea or innovation can arise from an in‐group bias among employees within an organizational subunit that leads the subunit's members to undervalue systematically ideas associated with members of the organization outside their subunit. Such biases in internal selection processes can stymie organizational adaptation and therefore depress the performance of the firm. Analyzing data on innovation proposals inside a large, multinational consumer goods firm, we find that evaluators are biased in favor of ideas submitted by individuals that work in the same division and facility as they do, particularly when they belong to small or high‐status subunits. Highway pavement as an important component of transport infrastructure has significant impacts on economy, society, and environment. The management of highway pavement has been traditionally focused on economy. In this study, the impacts of management decisions are examined in three dimensions, including life-cycle cost (LCC), energy consumption, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Quantitative models to predict the three dimensions are developed from mechanistic-empirical pavement analysis results. Two decision variables, pavement thickness and threshold roughness level for pavement resurfacing, are found to be significant in affecting the three dimensions. These two variables are subsequently used as decision variables in multiobjective optimization. The ranges of decisions that result in minimum LCC, energy consumption, and GHG emissions are identified through multiobjective optimization. Although the analysis is illustrated in the context of pavement design and management in Hong Kong, the analysis techniques and procedures can be easily applied in other regions.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is to identify major challenges and opportunities for Islamic retail banking (IRB) in the European context. We present insights gained from the comparison of two European markets for IRB: the mature British and the relatively undeveloped German market. Based on this information, we propose a framework of four major attributes of a nation's socio-economic environment that determine to a large degree the evolution of a domestic market for IRB in Europe: demand conditions, supply conditions, regulatory conditions and societal conditions. We review each of these attributes, demonstrate how they can either be an opportunity or a challenge for IRB, and develop a number of suggestions for European countries and financial institutions seeking to participate in the growing market of IRB.  相似文献

Summary Overtime hours were worked in Germany during the period 1990–1997 primarily by well-qualified blue-collar and white-collar workers. In addition, it is evident that overtime is increasingly being compensated by flexible leisure schedules. The scope for potential employment effects from a reduction of paid overtime is thus constantly decreasing and is much lower than the figures cited by unions in the current discussion. If the regulations to make working time more flexible being discussed in the “Alliance for Jobs’ were to be implemented, this would reinforce the observed trend towards compensation for overtime through leisure, further diminishing the potential employment effects. If the bargaining parties or the legislators would implement a reduction of overtime nonetheless, well-qualified blue-collar and white-collar workers in western Germany will suffer income losses.  相似文献
