Economic Growth and CO2 Emissions in the European Union   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper examines the relationship between economic growth and CO2 emissions in the European Union. A panel data analysis for the period 1981 to 1995 is applied in order to estimate the relationship between Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth and CO2 emissions in ten selected European countries. The analysis shows important disparities between the most industrialised countries and the rest. The results do not seem to support a uniform policy to control emissions; they rather indicate that a reduction in emissions should be achieved by taking into account the specific economic situation and the industrial structure of each EU member state.  相似文献

Different variables have been considered growth enhancing. Traditionally, physical capital, human capital, and public capital have been considered. While the first two variables have been considered positive factors, the latter shows an ambiguous effect. The literature has also considered the role of exports in the economic growth process, introducing several arguments that test the hypothesis that exports are growth enhancing. One argument to be considered is that higher exports can increase total factor productivity due to returns to scale and that exports are an effective means to introduce advanced technology. To test this argument, an empirical analysis considered three possibilities, an export model, a demand model, and a mixed model that combined both. This empirical analysis was carried out for the various Spanish regions.  相似文献

According to conventional wisdom, terms‐of‐trade shocks represent a major source of business cycles in emerging and poor countries. This view is largely based on the analysis of calibrated business‐cycle models. We argue that the view that emerges from empirical structural vector autoregression (SVAR) models is strikingly different. We estimate country‐specific SVARs using data from 38 countries and find that terms‐of‐trade shocks explain less than 10% of movements in aggregate activity. We then estimate key structural parameters of a three‐sector business‐cycle model country by country and find a disconnect between the importance assigned to terms‐of‐trade shocks by theoretical and SVAR models.  相似文献

This article provides evidence on the relationship between fiscal decentralization and technical efficiency. We begin the first stage of this study with a data envelopment analysis to obtain technical efficiency estimates for a sample of 23 OECD countries over the period 1992–2009. In a second stage, we explore the effects of fiscal decentralization and other control variables on technical efficiency. The results including all the control variables reveal a statistically significant negative relationship between fiscal decentralization of public expenditure and technical efficiency.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the long-term relationship between research and development (R&D), innovations and productivity in 400 Uruguayan manufacturing firms during the period 2001–2009 based on a modified version of the structural model of Crepon, Duguet and Mairesse. The paper also analyzes thoroughly the decision of these firms to engage in R&D activities by using a novel categorical dependent variable, which takes three values: non-performance R&D activities, occasional performance or continuous performance over the period. Furthermore, the study investigates whether these manufacturing ?rms innovate persistently or discontinuously over the period. The results suggest a positive link between the intensity of R&D activities and the generation of product and process innovations. They also indicate that innovation probability is temporally persistent at the ?rm-level only for product innovations. Finally, the empirical findings reveal that these technological innovations have a positive effect on firm’s productivity.  相似文献

In the spirit of Hanson (Econ J 107:113–133, 1997), we analyse, first, the existence of a relationship between the wage level and the market potential of Spanish regions; second, we explore the relative importance of domestic and foreign markets in this relationship; and finally, we examine the existence of a regional nominal wage gradient in Spain during the interwar period (1914–1930) centred on the main industrial cluster, Barcelona, and its transformation following the increase in protectionism in the Spanish economy as well as in the international economy. As suggested by NEG literature, our results support the hypothesis of a relationship between wages and regional market access and show the change in the regional wage structure following the gradual closing of the Spanish economy and of Spain’s trade partners, as a result of the increasing importance of the domestic market. We find evidence of the existence of a regional wage gradient centred on Barcelona which weakened during these years. Therefore, in Spain, during the interwar period, protectionist policies appear to have favoured the loss of centrality of a border region (Barcelona) and the relative rise of other locations.  相似文献

All the main indicators related to entrepreneurship have increased since 2011 (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor 2018, 2019). The positive perception of this phenomenon was boosted by the socio-economic situation and by a specific agent of the entrepreneurial ecosystem: the economic specialized media. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that the economic media has given their readers an excessively positive discourse, linked to success and to the lack of analysis of the entrepreneurial phenomenon. The sample is defined in terms of a linguistic corpus comprising content related to entrepreneurship drawn from the digital editions of the three most important Spanish economic newspapers for the period 2010 to 2018. A systematic standardize assignment of categories to the contents and an analysis of the relationships between those categories has been carried out (Riffe et al. 2019). These categories are ‘number of contents’, ‘information treatment’, ‘percentage of success stories’, ‘percentage of content analysis’ and ‘sources’. The results reveal a clear intention of the media to offer an overly optimistic perception of the entrepreneurial phenomenon considering the survival rate of the projects mentioned. There is evidence for a selection of information linked to success, a lack of follow-up of the stories and a poor preparation by the media, which lacks specialized journalists and, above all, replicates agency contents. This study provides empirical evidence that helps to identify the optimistic perception imposed by the media for the entrepreneurial phenomenon. This perception, together with other relevant facts, contribute to the creation of an ‘information bubble’ (Cervantes-Zacarés 2019) during the period under study.
