In this paper we develop a portfolio selection theory under regime switching means and volatilities. We use log mean-variance as the portfolio selection criteria and, as a result, the theory is made substantially easier to implement than other existing theories. Moreover, the estimated regimes are easy to interpret as one of the regimes corresponds to the business cycle turning points. Finally, we conduct an asset allocation simulation and obtain reasonable results by introducing an idea of switching volatility targets. 相似文献

Through an analysis of Alfred Krupp’s 19th-century social welfare program, this paper develops an ordonomic contribution to corporate risk management. The paper argues that companies can employ ‘morality as a factor of production’ by a differentiated business strategy of moral commitments. In this way, companies can not only considerably reduce their exposure to the undesirable risks of losing core business relationships with important stakeholders. But at the same time, businesses may increase their readiness to take desirable innovation risks that are pivotal for long-term value creation. Ultimately, the paper develops an argument for how companies can better live up to the role of being an agent of societal value creation, often articulated by concepts such as “corporate social responsibility” or “corporate citizenship”. 相似文献

In this study, we investigate the effects of stock short-sale constraints on options trading by exploiting two US Securities and Exchange Commission rule changes under Regulation SHO: Rule 203 (locate and close-out requirements) and Rule 202T (temporary removal of short-sale price tests). We find that stock short selling activities decrease (increase) significantly after Rule 203 (Rule 202T) implementation, supporting the validity of Rule 203 (Rule 202T) as an exogenous increase (decrease) in short-sale constraints. Options volume increases significantly after Rule 203 went into effect and the result is more pronounced among firms with lower levels of institutional ownership and smaller options bid-ask spreads. Therefore, the evidence from Rule 203 suggests that investors may use options as substitutes for stock short sales when short selling is less feasible or more costly due to the locate and delivery requirements. In contrast, we find no significant change in the options trading volume of pilot stocks during the pilot program of Rule 202T. Overall, our results indicate that the impact of short-sale constraints on options trading varies with the types of constraints affected. 相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of pricing a perpetual American put option in an exponential regime-switching Lévy model.
For the case of the (dense) class of phase-type jumps and finitely many regimes we derive an explicit expression for the value
function. The solution of the corresponding first-passage problem under a state-dependent level rests on a path transformation
and a new matrix Wiener–Hopf factorization result for this class of processes.

This paper investigates whether the accrual anomaly reported in prior studies exists across both profit and loss firms. We
posit that the extent of accrual mispricing is less severe for loss firms than for profit firms because earnings for loss
firms are less value relevant and, therefore, less subject to accrual mispricing. As expected, we find that the accrual overpricing
anomaly is restricted to profit-making firms and, thus, is dampened by the inclusion of loss firms in the sample. Furthermore,
we report that accrual overpricing for profit firms but not for loss firms is primarily attributable to the overpricing of
positive accruals of profit firms compared with those of loss firms. Finally, we find that the phenomenon of accrual overpricing
for profit but not for loss firms may persist into the new regulatory environment following the passage of the Sarbanes–Oxley

Background risk can influence the performance of insurance markets that must deal with adverse selection when applicants are risk vulnerable, since they are more averse to bearing the insurable risk as a result of their exposures to background risk. We show that background risk always results in a lower deductible for the incentive constrained contract, and that a broader range of markets attains the stable sequential equilibrium cross-subsidized pair of separating contracts. We conclude that background risk always improves the performance of markets for coverage against (insurable) foreground risks that must deal with adverse selection. We also find, however, that these improvements are never sufficient to offset the cost to insureds of bearing the background risk. 相似文献

The two main purposes of this paper are an introduction to the economic analysis of insurance fraud and furthermore a derivation of factors that determine fraudulent behavior of policyholders on insurance markets. Consequently, we analyze the strategic decision problems of insurance companies and the policyholders and identify some factors that can help to reduce fraudulent behavior. In this context we evaluate two derived starting points for the combat against insurance fraud: fraud detection systems and a consequent charge policy of detected defrauders. We illustrate that both points can help to reduce the cost of fraud. Furthermore, we enhance our earlier analysis with respect to the empirical fact that some individuals care about fairness or — in the insurance fraud context — the legitimacy of their actions. Surprisingly, in some market situations these concerns of some policyholders do not lead to a lower fraud probability. Finally, we discuss how and to what extent insurance companies can influence such ethical concerns of policyholders. On that score, we distinguish insurance specific and insurance unspecific factors and their impact on the consumers attitudes towards insurance fraud. 相似文献

The study examines whether prestigious investment banks deliver quality gains to their clients in a sample of 6,379 US M&A
deals. It finds that acquirers advised by tier-one advisors lost more than $42 billion, whereas those advised by tier-two
advisors gained $42 billion, whereas those advised by tier-two
advisors gained 13.5 billion at the merger announcement. The results were mainly driven by the large loss deals advised by
tier-one advisors. The evidence indicates that investment banks might have different incentives when they advise on large
deals vs. small deals. The results imply that market share based reputation league tables, could be misleading and therefore,
the selection of investment banks should be based on their track record in generating gains to their clients. The findings
were consistent with the superior deal hypothesis as tier-one target advisors outperformed tier-two advisors and the existence
of a prestigious advisor on at least one side of an M&A transaction resulted in higher wealth gains to the combined entity.
Target advisors were able to extract more wealth gains for their clients, which led to higher combined gains at the expense

In April 2000 the British Government legislated to provide UK citizens with a wide range of tax concessions on charitable donations, enabling registered UK charities to develop and launch new donor products similar in form to the ‘planned giving’ instruments that for many years have been available to supporters of US nonprofit organisations. This paper presents the outcomes to a study of the progress so far achieved by a sample of 89 British charities in their attempts to introduce planned giving products. This paper models the banking competition in loan and deposit markets on two levels. We measure the competition among different banks and among banks and non-bank financing and saving alternatives. We estimate a model of demand, cost, and market equilibrium equations for differentiated products by using data from the confidential reports that Spanish banks provide to the Bank of Spain during the period from 1988 to 2003. This database contains information on the effective interest rates on new loans and deposits, and the expected loan losses obtained from the Spanish Credit Register. The estimated price elasticities show that the products offered by different banks are close substitutes, which puts pressure on the banks’ profits margins. However, the substitutability between bank and non-bank products is much lower than the substitutability among products offered by different banks. The results also show that Spain’s entrance into the Eurozone did not cause a structural change in the demand and cost conditions of Spanish banks. The banks financed most of the imbalances between bank loans and domestic deposits before the crisis through the interbank market. 相似文献
