The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act of 1989 mandated that at least 60 days advance notice be given to employees. Critics argued that its passage would decrease managerial flexibility in closing plants, subsequently reducing firm values. This study addresses this issue by examining the stock market's reaction to announcements leading to the eventual enactment of the WARN legislation. We find evidence indicating negative effects of the legislation on stock returns of small firms. 相似文献
This paper presents a logit model for dating business-cycle turning points. The regressors are monthly series from the Business
Cycle Indicators database of the Conference Board. Dividing the sample period into a subset for model initialization (1959∶9–1970∶12)
and a subset for testing (1971∶1–2003∶12) yields a chronology that is nearly identical to that established by the National
Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). However, the recognition lag is less than four months, in contrast to an average of more
than eleven months for the official chronology. (JEL E320)

Environmental uncertainty is a fact of life in today's supply chains. In this paper we develop a model of environmental uncertainty, supply chain (SC) relationship quality and SC performance. We use data from the electronics sector in Ireland to test our model. Our results provide mixed support for the model, with the moderating role of both demand and supply uncertainty being supported, but technological uncertainty not supported. We reflect on these findings and suggest a research agenda based on our results. 相似文献
The trunk road system in Norway has to be supplemented by a number of ferries due to the long coastline with numerous islands and fjords. Most of the ferries are run by private companies, but at a loss. The deficit are covered by the Ministry of Transport. The subsidies have risen rapidly in the last years and have focussed attention on whether the ferries are really run as efficiently as possible. To change the incentives to economize, a lump-sum payment is considered. To implement such a system, an initial assessment of reasonable input requirements is needed. The aim of this article is to provide such a yardstick by establishing a best practice frontier. Both a non-parametric and a parametric approach to a deterministic frontier are tried and differences of results discussed. Peculiarities due to choice of methods are revealed. The efficiency distributions are quite similar for the two methods except for scale efficiency, where the parametric method indicates substantial unrealized scale economies, while the non-parametric approach shows the largest and some small ferries to be scale efficient. The results indicate a substantial rationalization potential of about 30 percent in total.I am indebted to three referees for forcing me to improve significantly the quality of the study. Any remaining shortcomings are, of course, my responsibility. 相似文献
In the last few years bipartisan support for legalizing drugs has grown to a surprising level. Because of the lack of involvement of the business community in this debate, we surveyed the human resource managers of 127 firms about their perceptions of the effects of legalization. Their responses were uniformly negative, with expectations that drug use, absenteeism, worksite crime, and liability costs would increase, while the quality and quantity of work would decline. They also forecast increases in drug testing, performance monitoring, and education and rehabilitation programs as a result. 相似文献
In this paper, we propose an estimator for the population mean when some observations on the study and auxiliary variables
are missing from the sample. The proposed estimator is valid for any unequal probability sampling design, and is based upon
the pseudo empirical likelihood method. The proposed estimator is compared with other estimators in a simulation study. 相似文献

Interest in management control approaches and organizational factors associated with higher levels of salesperson performance
is reflected in research streams concerned with behavior-based control strategies and organizational citizenship behaviors
(OCBs). This study makes two distinct additions to the literature relating to control, organizational citizenship behaviors
and salesperson performance. First, the study distinguishes between salesperson in-role behavior performance and outcome performance
to model in-role behavior performance as a mediator between OCB and outcome performance. Second, the work supports sales manager
control as an antecedent to OCB. A second model introduces perceived organizational support (POS) as an additional antecedent
to salesperson OCB, and more important, as a consequence of sales manager control. This construct has not been included in
prior salesperson OCB studies. Results show sales manage control has a stronger impact on OCB through POS, than directly,
and POS has a strong impact on salesperson OCB.

This work draws on consumer and psychology research to explain sociocognitive aspects of product-market dynamics at a higher
level of specificity than prior research. The authors extend the field’s understanding of market-shaping shared knowledge
through a theory-informed discussion of how shared product knowledge comes to exist and how it changes as product markets
develop. They define shared knowledge as the aspects of product representations that are common across the minds of market
actors, making it possible for them to understand one another. The authors also discuss ways to track shared knowledge content
that is expressed in market narratives. As the characteristics of shared knowledge are explained and linked to stages of product-market
development, the authors develop a set of researchable propositions to guide future research. The theoretical arguments and
propositions in this article complement extant marketing strategy research by integrating individual-level consumer theory
with market evolution models.
