In the closing days of the recent current credit crunch, policymakers have been searching for solutions to make the global banking system more robust to withstand future crises. A range of options are presently under consideration, but principal concerns relate to three core issues: the adequacy of the capital bases of banks, the realisation that some banks are ‘too big to fail’ owing to the impact of failure on the wider economy, and the need to refocus lenders’ attention on the importance of the quality of the borrower as opposed to more abstract future cashflows derived from a project or line of business such as mortgages. This article considers the causes of a previous ‘credit crunch’, this being the banking crisis that preceded the Great Depression of the 1920s in the United States. Legislative responses by the US government at that time are evaluated in terms of potential applicability to the recent credit crunch. The article provides an informed analysis for marketing strategy formulation aimed at encouraging and promoting trust among banks themselves, and banks and their principal stakeholders. It argues that if new stakeholders or providers of additional bank capital are not forthcoming, formal legislative intervention may be the only solution available to regulators. In this regard, marketing and communications strategies take on a wholly new importance in promoting the stability of the international banking industry. 相似文献

Teachers’ informed acceptance of challenges associated with teaching technology might ensure the successful implementation
of a Technology syllabus in primary schools. They must be prepared to analyse their own understandings of technology concepts
and processes, teaching and resource needs, and engage in professional development activities designed to meet their needs.
This paper investigates the introduction of a new Technology syllabus into a school and draws on a number of data sources,
for example, surveys, interviews with individual teachers, classroom observations, and field notes. It was evident that very
specific personal and classroom related issues (e.g., content and pedagogy), and broader issues related to the school and
wider communities (e.g., resources and networking), impacted on teachers’ acceptance of the syllabus. Based on these findings,
the influence of 20 years of technology education and associated research on the essentials of classroom syllabus implementation
by teachers is evaluated. Ways of making this store of knowledge and expertise more meaningful and accessible for teachers

Conventional viticultural practice in Australia and elsewhere involves removal of under‐vine vegetation using herbicides or cultivation. Concerns over the long‐term effects of herbicides on soil health, evolution of resistant weeds and possible impacts on human health motivate the search for alternative weed management options. Industry‐supported trials on commercial vineyards in four South Australian regions investigated standard practices of straw mulch and bare earth created with herbicides, compared to under‐vine cover crops, focusing on soil health attributes (soil carbon, soil microbiological processes, etc.) and grape yields in 2016 and 2017. Measured yields with the Control (herbicide) treatment were combined with published district grape prices and yields over the 12‐year (2006–2017) period, defining multivariate distributions of gross revenues ($/ha). Assuming all treatments produce grapes of equal quality and price as the Control, our results showed median per‐hectare gross margins greater than the Control in the Barossa district, lower than Control in Riverland, and mixed results in Langhorne Creek and Eden Valley. Multi‐year risk profiles, based on decadal whole‐farm (50 ha) cash flows for each treatment, were calculated using Monte Carlo analysis, based on historical yield and price distributions. In this article the economic impacts of Virginia State University's Small Farm Outreach, Training, and Technical Assistance Program are assessed. Impacts are measured in terms of program effect on incomes of limited-resource participant farmers compared with their net farm incomes had they not participated. The program appears to significantly increase net farm income, provided there is sufficient intensity of participation. A single visit by an agent had no significant effect on income, suggesting a rationale for deepening participation intensity before broadening it. Aggregate program benefits may approach $5 million per year (for a cost of a few hundred thousand dollars). 相似文献

This paper explores the nature of private social and environmental reporting (SER). From interviews with UK institutional investors, we show that both investors and investees employ Goffmanesque, staged impression management as a means of creating and disseminating a dual myth of social and environmental accountability. The interviewees’ utterances unveil private meetings imbued with theatrical verbal and physical impression management. Most of the time, the investors’ shared awareness of reality belongs to a Goffmanesque frame whereby they accept no intentionality, misrepresentation or fabrication, believing instead that the ‘performers’ (investees) are not intending to deceive them. A shared perception that social and environmental considerations are subordinated to financial issues renders private SER an empty encounter characterised as a relationship-building exercise with seldom any impact on investment decision-making. Investors spoke of occasional instances of fabrication but these were insufficient to break the frame of dual myth creation. They only identified a handful of instances where intentional misrepresentation had been significant enough to alter their reality and behaviour. Only in the most extreme cases of fabrication and lying did the staged meeting break frame and become a genuine occasion of accountability, where investors demanded greater transparency, further meetings and at the extreme, divested shares. We conclude that the frontstage, ritualistic impression management in private SER is inconsistent with backstage activities within financial institutions where private financial reporting is prioritised. The investors appeared to be in a double bind whereby they devoted resources to private SER but were simultaneously aware that these efforts may be at best subordinated, at worst ignored, rendering private SER a predominantly cosmetic, theatrical and empty exercise. 相似文献
