In this article, the authors investigate competitive firm behaviors in a two-firm environment assuming linear cost and demand functions. By introducing conjectural variations, they capture the different market structures as specific configurations of a more general model. Conjectural variations are based on the assumption that each firm believes its own strategy influences its rival's strategy. Firms derive their optimal choice from these exogenous conjectures, under the form of a conjectural best-response function. The authors’ approach fully encompasses the standard measures of market power (the Lerner Index) and concentration (the Herfindahl Index), both depending on the conjectural variations. They finally represent, analytically and graphically, the equilibrium strategies and the associated indexes in a unified framework for any level of competition, ranging from perfect competition to collusion.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to explore how the various stages of consciousness development of top managers can influence, in practical terms, their abilities in and commitment to environmental leadership in different types of SMEs. A case study based on 63 interviews carried out in 15 industrial SMEs showed that the organizations that displayed the most environmental management practices were mostly run by managers at a post-conventional stage of consciousness development. Conversely, the SMEs that displayed less sustainable environmental management practices were all run by managers at conventional stages of development. Drawing upon diverse examples of environmental leadership, this paper analyzes the reasons why the stages of post-conventional consciousness development of top managers seem to foster corporate greening in SMEs. The study also sheds light on the key values and abilities associated with both environmental leadership and the upper-stages of consciousness development, which include a broader and systemic perspective, long-range focus, integration of conflicting goals, collaboration with stakeholders, complexity management, collaborative learning, among others.  相似文献

Decision theory offers a formal approach to decision making, which is often viewed and taught as the rational way to approach managerial decisions. Half a century ago it generated high hopes of capturing and perhaps replacing intuition, and providing the “right” answer in practically all managerial situations. Today it seems fair to say that decision theory has not lived up to these expectations. Behavioral science provides ample evidence that managers fail to follow the dicta of decision theory, even when these are explained to them. As a result, executives often find decision theory frustrating and useless and prefer to rely on their intuition. This paper suggests that this extreme conclusion is unwarranted and calls for a re-appraisal of decision theory. We propose that it should not always be regarded as a mathematical tool that produces the answer; rather, it can be viewed as a framework for a dialog between the decision maker and the decision theorist. In one extreme, the decision theorist studies the problem and provides the “correct’’ answer. But in another, the decision theorist only challenges the decision maker's intuition and logic. In between, a whole gamut of possible dialogs exists, in which decision theory doesn't replace intuition, but supports and refines it.  相似文献

Over 1.5 million ISO 9001 certificates are in effect worldwide, 30 years after this quality management standard was launched. As the factory of the world, China is by far the leading country for ISO 9001, in terms of both absolute and relative numbers and growth. Nevertheless, practitioners have cast doubts on the reliability of adopting ISO third-party quality certification in this country. In-depth interviews with 40 senior quality managers, consultants, and auditors with broad field experience and other complementary methods paints a disturbing picture. The widespread prevalence of fake ISO 9001 certificates is indicated, together with an eroded credibility of the process of third-party certification. We discuss the profound implications of the study—including whether or not the phenomenon is restricted to China—and introduce suggestions for managers and other stakeholders, as well as avenues for further research.  相似文献

Many sectors such as the fishery show classic examples of technological lock‐in and path dependence, even though some economists might predict smooth switching toward technologies that are more cost effective and sustainable. We use ideas from the evolutionary economics and public choice literatures to explain why trajectories of technological change, especially in fisheries, may not be smooth at all, but rather punctuated. The interest of technological change and switching behavior for fisheries economists and managers stems from the fact that control of effective effort, often necessary for sustainable management of the resource, remains a central management problem for that sector worldwide, even in developed countries. However, various policies put in place by governments to support the fishing sector, and often put in place to “correct” for certain market failures, may inadvertently produce other “nonmarket” failures, which result in technological lock‐ins which are unsustainable. For example, the trawling technique was widely promoted in France in the 1970s and 1980s. Path dependency developed in such a way that the preferred choice of new entrants into the fishery was this technology. Technological lock‐in occurred on the trawling technique as the trawling sector also became more politically active, making it ultimately the most widely used technique in the French fisheries sector in the Atlantic. Switching away from this technology has not taken place even with poorer economic performance of that technology. This paper also discusses the influence of state subsidies on the adoption of trawling. Even if trawling was a major innovation in fisheries in the past, its potential for technological adaptations or minor innovations is limited now. These limitations are more obvious during periods of increasing energy prices, especially in the absence of state aid. However, due to collective choice phenomena, switches to more sustainable technologies will occur more slowly. Plusieurs secteurs, tel que celui des pêcheries, offrent des exemples de verrouillage technologique et de dépendances au sentier, alors même que les économistes s’attendent à un changement régulier vers une technologie plus efficace en termes de coûts et plus soutenable. Nous nous appuyons sur la littérature évolutionniste et des choix publics afin d’expliquer pourquoi les trajectoires du changement technologique, en particulier dans les pêcheries, peuvent ne pas être régulières, mais au contraire discontinues. L’intérêt des économistes et des gestionnaires pour le changement technologique et le comportement face au retour des techniques est lié au contrôle de l’effort réel, souvent nécessaire pour une gestion durable de la ressource. Le contrôle de l’effort reste le problème essentiel de la gestion des pêches à l’échelle mondiale, y compris dans les pays développés. Toutefois, de nombreuses mesures publiques mises en place par les gouvernements pour soutenir le secteur des pêcheries, afin de «contrecarrer» certaines défaillances du marché, peuvent déboucher involontairement sur d’autres défaillances «non marchandes», se traduisant par des verrouillages technologiques non‐soutenables. Par exemple, la technique du chalutage fut largement diffusé en France dans les années soixante‐dix et quatre‐vingt. Un sentier de dépendance s’est développé tel que les nouveaux entrants dans la pêcherie optaient pour cette technologie. Un verrouillage technologique s’est produit sur la technique du chalutage rendant ce secteur politiquement important, et finalement la technique la plus répandue parmi les pêcheries françaises de l’Atlantique. Un changement de technologie n’a donc pu survenir, même en présence de faibles performances économiques. L’article traite de l’influence des subventions étatiques liées à l’adoption du chalutage. Même si cette technologie fut une innovation majeure dans les pêcheries par le passé, les adaptations techniques potentielles ou les innovations mineures sont désormais limitées. Ces limites apparaissent clairement dans les périodes de coûts énergétiques croissants, notamment en l’absence d’aides étatiques. Toutefois, en raison du phénomène de comportements collectifs, les changements vers des technologies plus soutenables se déroulent avec lenteur.  相似文献

This article investigates the consumer welfare consequences of the recent code‐share agreement between Continental Airlines and Northwest Airlines. We develop a discrete choice model based on individual flight characteristics. This structural model recognizes that consumers (i) may have heterogeneous preferences for flight attributes, and (ii) may face different prices for the same flight. The empirical methodology also deals with the measurement error problem stemming from the absence of consumer‐level data on prices. The estimation results suggest that, whereas the code‐share agreement did not impact consumers significantly on average, it increased the average surplus of connecting passengers but decreased the average surplus of nonstop passengers. Interestingly, the magnitude of our welfare results may be attributed in large part to changes in product characteristics other than prices.  相似文献

The value‐based approach to strategy argues that a firm's ability to capture value depends on the extent of its added value. In this paper, I empirically test the link between added value and value capture using a longitudinal dataset of United Kingdom law firm performance, capabilities, and client relationships. In this setting, competitors relevant for defining a firm's added value are those that share a client with the firm. Further, within a client relationship, value creation, and hence added value, can be decomposed in two parts: product‐line capability and client‐specific scope economies. I find that added value, measured at the level of each buyer‐supplier relationship, is a driver of relationship stability and supplier profitability. This suggests that suppliers with similar capabilities might enjoy different economic returns depending on the composition of their set of relevant competitors. These findings shed light on the conditions under which firms can appropriate returns from their capabilities. They indicate that concepts from cooperative games can be fruitfully applied to empirical studies of firm performance and to the elaboration of insights from the resource‐based view of the firm. We use a formal value‐based model to study how frictions—incomplete linkages in the industry value chain that keep some parties from meeting and transacting—affect value creation and value capture. Frictions arise from search and switching costs and moderate the intensity of industry rivalry and the efficiency of the market. We find that firms with a competitive advantage prefer industries with less, but not zero, frictions. We show that rivalry interacts nontrivially with other competitive forces to affect industry attractiveness. Firm heterogeneity emerges naturally when we introduce resource development. Heterogeneity falls with frictions, but the sustainability of competitive advantage increases. Overall, we show that introducing frictions makes value‐based models very effective at integrating analyses at the industry, firm, and resource levels. Using order-theoretic methods, we derive sufficient conditions for the existence, characterization, and computation of minimal state space recursive equilibrium (RE), as well as Stationary Markov equilibrium (SME) for various classes of stochastic overlapping generations models. In contrast to previous work, our methods focus on constructive methods. Our existence results are obtained for models that include public policy (e.g., social security policies, transfers, taxes, etc), production nonconvexities, elastic labor supply, non-monotone income processes, and long-lived agents. We distinguish conditions under which there exist various subclasses of minimal state space RE, including bounded, monotone, non-monotone, semicontinuous, Lipschitz continuous RE. Finally, we provide monotone equilibrium comparative statics results on the space of economies for some RE.  相似文献

This article identifies the effect of trade policy on market power through new data and a new identification strategy. We identify market power by observing how exporting firms price discriminate across markets following variations in bilateral exchange rates. Pricing‐to‐market is prevalent in all countries in our sample, even among small firms, although it is increasing in firm size. More importantly, we find that the effect of nontariff measures (NTMs) is not isomorphic to that of tariffs. Whereas tariffs reduce the market power of foreign firms through rent‐shifting effects, NTMs reinforce the market power of nonexiting firms, domestic and foreign alike.  相似文献
