Women's experiences of work and family conflict in a Chinese airline

Established literature on work–family conflict concentrates on the experiences of women and organizational equalities policies in Western contexts. This article examines the experiences of women working in a Chinese airline. Drawing on questionnaires and interviews with female employees and managers, we explore work–family conflict and gendered organizational perceptions of women's needs. Our findings suggest that work rather than family-related factors are the most influential causes of conflict for Chinese women in our case study. Cultural and social factors that shape familial relationships prove important in explaining these differences, but we also highlight the significant role played by gendered organizational culture.

Marriage,cohabitation and women's response to changes in the male wage structure

Using microdata and grouped data that cover the period 1996 to 2006, we assess the extent to which cohabiting women adjust their labour supply to a lesser extent, if any, than married women in response to changes in male wages. Both microdata regressions and grouping estimators unambiguously indicate that cohabiting women respond less to variation in male wages than married women. However, the magnitude of the difference is not sizeable. We also assess the magnitude of married men's and cohabiting men's own wage elasticities and find that they do not differ much. Combined with the fact that male earnings account for roughly two-thirds of family earnings, these two findings explain why the impact of changes in male wages on family earnings is very similar for married couples and cohabiting couples: in both cases, a 10% decline in male wages appears to induce roughly a 6% drop in family earnings.     

Multidimensional risk and risk dependence

Evaluating multiple sources of risk is an important problem with many applications in finance and economics. In practice this evaluation remains challenging. We propose a simple non-parametric framework with several economic and statistical applications. In an empirical study, we illustrate the flexibility of our technique by applying it to the evaluation of multidimensional density forecasts, multidimensional Value at Risk and dependence in risk.     

基于SFA的我国汽车制造业技术效率的研究

本文以我国汽车制造行业为研究对象,选取10家具有代表性的汽车制造企业2000-2009年的面板数据,运用随机前沿分析(SFA)模型,实证研究了我国汽车制造企业的技术效率。研究结果表明,我国汽车制造业的技术效率总体呈波动趋势;客车、重卡企业技术效率最高,乘用车企业次之,轻卡、农用车企业最低;东部地区技术效率高于中部和西部;技术效率影响因素方面,库存过高、研发人员过多以及汽车产量过大不利于技术效率水平的提高,而企业与供应商和客户关系的加深,能提高企业的技术效率水平。

The need for speed: impacts of internet connectivity on firm productivity

Broadband access is widely considered to be a productivity-enhancing factor, but there are few firm-level estimates of its benefits. We use a large micro-survey of firms linked to longitudinal firm financial data to determine the impact that broadband access has on firm productivity. Propensity score matching is used to control for factors, including the firm’s own lagged productivity, that determine a firm’s internet access choice. Instrumental variables estimates are employed as a robustness check. Results indicate that broadband adoption boosts firm productivity by 7–10%; effects are consistent across urban versus rural locations and across high versus low knowledge intensive sectors.
