Managerial Choices in the Valuation of Acquired Goodwill in the UK

During the 1980s the UK regulations affecting accounting for acquired goodwill allowed managers to make accounting choices affecting recorded goodwill that best served their particular interests. This paper develops and tests the hypothesis that the proportions of purchase price assigned to separable net assets and consequently to goodwill are affected by gearing (leverage) and other considerations.     

The reorganization addiction in local government: unitary councils for England

Structural reorganization of local government is an addictive habit to which British government ministers and civil servants are peculiarly prone. In the latest instance, several unitary authorities were created where two-tier systems existed previously. Interviews and documentary research carried out before and after the reorganization demonstrate that many of the supposed benefits of structural change have not materialized, and some local authorities are still recovering from the resulting disruption.

As James Buchanan often asserted, in constitutional design “we start from here” which is to say we design a constitution to fit the institutions, social practices and so forth that we already have. Comparison of the complicated case of the US constitution and the failed attempt at constitutionalism in contemporary Egypt suggest that many societies are not yet ready for serious constitutional design. The English civil wars were about religion; the US constitution ignores religion and thereby avoids the grim conflict of church and state.     

Exploring the impact of mobile money services on marketing interactions in relation to consumer well-being in subsistence marketplaces – lessons from rural Cambodia

Abstract

The mobile phone has increasingly become a channel for providing access to formal financial services. There is a need to understand how financial service offerings, increasingly accessed through mobile phones, impact marketing interactions, specifically marketing exchange activities and social network relationships, to enhance consumer well-being (CWB) in subsistence marketplaces. Through interviews and contextualised observational research in rural Cambodia, findings reveal that the impacts of mobile money services on marketing interactions in relation to CWB can be categorised at two distinct levels. The first-level impact is the actual physical money transfer transactions as part of the marketing exchange activities which leads to the second-level impact on the social network relationships at interpersonal, social group and cultural levels. Drawing from these insights, policy-makers and industry stakeholders can formulate strategies and develop innovative service offerings through mobile phone technology to enhance CWB in subsistence marketplaces.     

The importance of risk and insurance teaching within the ARIA mission

The American Risk and Insurance Association (ARIA) is a scholarly association devoted to the study of and promotion of risk and insurance economics and has a history of innovative scholarship in fields that are vital to economic development and resiliency throughout the world. Association members have an equally important mission and history of passing along important knowledge to students and the risk professions. The Risk and Insurance Teaching Society (RITS) was established as part of the pedagogical and academic program roles of ARIA. This paper outlines the importance of pedagogy within business higher education and more specifically within the academic discipline of risk and insurance and the increasing role that RITS plays in pedagogical innovation and idea sharing among risk and insurance academics.     

Boundary problems with the “Russell” graph measure of technical efficiency: a refinement

In an influential paper, Färe and Lovell (J Econ Theory 19:150–162, 1978) proposed an (input based) technical efficiency index designed to correct two fundamental inadequacies of the Debreu-Farrell index: its failure to satisfy (1) indication (the index is equal to 1 if and only if the input bundle is technically efficient) and (2) weak monotonicity (an increase in any one input quantity cannot increase the value of the index). Färe et al. (1985) extended the index to measure efficiency in the full space of input and output quantities. Unfortunately, this index fails to satisfy not only indication and monotonicity at the boundary (of output space), but also weak monotonicity. We show, however, that a simple modification of the index corrects these flaws. To demonstrate the tractability of our proposal, we apply it to baseball batting performance, in which zero outputs occur frequently.     

Ambivalence toward a country and consumers?? willingness to buy emblematic brands: The differential predictive validity of objective and subjective ambivalence measures on behavior

Previous country-of-origin research has treated opinions of countries as either positive or negative, even though people may in fact hold conflicting opinions about countries. The extant literature on ambivalence suggests that the coexistence of positive and negative opinions of a country should increase avoidance of objects associated with that country, above and beyond the effects of mere positivity or negativity. Data collected from French consumers who varied in degrees of ambivalence toward the US reveal that ambivalence, measured indirectly through consumers?? coexisting positive and negative views, is indeed negatively related to consumers?? willingness to buy emblematic American brands. The findings highlight the latent nature of ambivalence, the difficulty of assessing the subjective experience of the ambivalence state, and the importance and practicality of using indirect measures.     

Corporate political activity: The good,the bad,and the ugly

Many executives mix business with politics, but to what end? Over the past 30 years, researchers have examined whether this practice leads to increased business performance, and have found conflicting results. Via meta-analysis, we reexamined these results and condensed them into one meaningful package. The good news is that businesses which mix business and politics generally receive handsome returns. The bad news is that engaging in political activity has risks and can hurt performance. The ugly news is that risks can be mitigated; however, the methods for doing so are likely to offend some firm stakeholders. Overall, we conclude that mixing business with politics is beneficial, although executives must pursue the practice with a hint of caution.
