Concerns that small firms encounter credit constraints are well entrenched in the literature, despite widespread empirical
evidence that a relatively small proportion of small firms have their loan applications rejected. However, many firms may
be discouraged from applying for fear of rejection. These businesses are the focus of this paper. Based on responses to a
large-scale postal survey of UK small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), we find that twice as many businesses were discouraged
from applying for a bank loan than had their loan request denied. More particularly, we observe a number of distinguishing
characteristics of “discouraged borrowers” (relative to applicants). These include: strategy, sector, prior entrepreneurial
experience and banking relationships. The implications of our findings for policy and future research are briefly discussed. 相似文献

Over the past 30 years, the economies in Europe have undergone major transformations that have been powered by diffusion of information and communication technology (ICT), intensification of innovation, and reforms in the financial sector to support innovative endeavors. The primary objective of this study was to examine the causal relationships among ICT diffusion, innovation diffusion, venture capital investment, and economic growth for 25 countries in Europe for the period from 1989 to 2016. Using a vector error‐correction model, the study examines the underlying short‐run and long‐run relationships for the above variables. The empirical analysis shows that in the long run, venture capital investment, ICT diffusion, and innovation diffusion have significant impacts on economic growth in Europe. However, in the short run, the direction of the causality varies depending on the specific measures of ICT diffusion and innovation diffusion that are utilized. Results from this study provide valuable insights into the types of policies that will contribute to sustainable economic growth in Europe. 相似文献

This article provides evidence of the effect of military expenditures on the rate of profits for 24 OECD countries for the period of 1963–2008 by employing a panel autoregressive distributed lag model within a Marxist framework for the first time. Findings show that while for the whole period there is positive linkage between military expenditures and profit rates, in the post‐1980 era the impact of military expenditures is negative. Findings suggest weak evidence that there is positive linkage between military expenditures and profit rates for arms‐exporting countries and negative linkage for non‐arms‐exporting countries. 相似文献

Industry has been upgrading its production processes through eco-innovation combining environmental and economic benefits, thus reducing some resource burdens which otherwise lie outside economic accounting. Some companies have shown interest in evaluating investment options for resource burdens and total value added across a whole-system value chain. Our EC research project developed a method for whole-system assessment of eco-innovation with multi-stakeholder cooperation. In three cases presented here, tensions arise among various aims, resource burdens, system levels, beneficiaries and timescales, thus complicating the concept of eco-innovation as a win–win strategy. Radical eco-innovation would depend on extra functions, value-chain actors and resource usages which can provide greater overall benefits. But such investment faces many systemic obstacles. Eco-innovation remains path dependent, thus limiting the scope to internalise environmental externalities. The tensions and difficulties cast doubt on an EC strategy emphasising uptake of eco-innovative technologies as the means to decouple economic growth from resource burdens. 相似文献

The advertising industry influences culture through its pervasive messages that reflect and shape culture and through the role that advertising practitioners play as cultural intermediaries. As such, the manner in which advertising practitioners confront ethical issues is important. Drawing on Bourdieu's theory of practice, this paper examines how the perceptions, practices, and discourses of advertising practitioners in the Middle East and North Africa influence the advertising field's habitus and doxa. It demonstrates that understanding ethical problems is enhanced by examining them as macro, meso, and micro phenomena. However, that is not enough. Understanding how factors at the three levels interrelate, interact, and reinforce one another is critical to understanding the habitus. Underlying biases that shape the doxa can be explained by ideas central to behavioral ethics. A better understanding of the forces that shape the habitus and doxa with respect to ethics is key to moving toward a culture that encourages ethical advertising practices. 相似文献

How reward satisfaction affects employees’ turnover intentions and performance: an individual differences approach 下载免费PDF全文
We challenge the assumption that satisfaction with rewards has the same effect on the behaviour and attitudes of every employee, and hypothesise that there are individual differences in the effects of (satisfaction with) financial, material and psychological rewards on turnover intentions and task performance. Survey data from 179 employees are combined with supervisor‐rated task performance data and analysed with cluster‐wise regression analysis. As for task performance, no employee types or individual differences were found. However, we identified three different employee types revealing a unique relationship pattern between satisfaction with financial, material and psychological rewards and turnover intentions. These employee types also differed in socio‐demographic characteristics and work values. Our findings illustrate that to be able to fully understand the underlying relationship between rewards and employee outcomes, scholars need to adopt an individual difference perspective and methodology. Implications for practice, limitations and opportunities for future studies are discussed. 相似文献

The extent to which the emergent structure of an organization remains the same, regardless of the turnover of the members,
is one of the most interesting questions raised by the analyses of its evolution. This paper uses longitudinal network analysis
to provide an answer to this question. Its shows the usefulness of combining both dynamics and comparative statics (here,
blockmodelling) in the study of this evolution. An empirical study examines the evolution of the structure of the advice network
among judges of the Commercial Court of Paris. The combination of dynamics and comparative statics answers the initial question:
Radical structuralism turns out to be wrong. An answer depends on the dimensions of the structure on which observers focus.
The pecking order in the advice network remains relatively stable, regardless of members’ turnover. However, social differentiation
measured in terms of role relationships and division of work shows that the relational structure does not remain the same
regardless of members’ turnover. Specifically, relational processes within the organization, such as collective learning,
impose varying constraints on different kinds of members over time and the overall relational structure reflects these members’
changing reactions and responses to these constraints. Since the former vary, so do the latter, and so does the resulting

The paper analyzes the demand and supply characteristics of the Indian telecommunications market, with the aim of contributing to the debate on the effectiveness of universal access policies in developing countries. The discussion is supported by some empirical evidence derived from a small time-series-cross-section dataset, containing mainly information on the fixed-lines segment of the market. The analysis suggests that the price elasticity of demand for fixed lines might be sensibly higher than the levels usually found in developed countries, while the crucial role of income and other sociodemographic variables seems to be confirmed. The paper also studies the impact of cellular penetration on fixed-lines diffusion. The results suggest the existence of a (positive) network effect in low penetration areas, while substitution (displacement) seems to arise in the most developed ones. Finally, the paper analyzes the supply side of the market, to assess the impact of market competition on investment. Competition seemingly helps stimulating investment in the most developed areas, but does not seem to have a significant impact in the less developed ones. 相似文献

This longitudinal, qualitative case study examines trust-building processes and learning outcomes among entrepreneurs who
participated in formal networks designed to develop competence and knowledge. This study is built on rich data collected through
observation and video recordings made during network meetings and get-togethers. Additional data was gleaned from personal
interviews with participating entrepreneurs. All data sources reveal on how trust develops and how entrepreneurs can use networks
to learn and improve their capacity to exploit business opportunities. Studying how trust is built over time among entrepreneurs
who demonstrate a low level of trust when they join the network, this study provides insights into micro-processes and important
components of building trust. Findings suggest three processes that build commitment, companionship, and competence trust.
Moreover, acknowledging the notion of social learning, the findings suggest that when entrepreneurs build trust with one another
they can experience cognitive, emotional, and social changes by participating in a network. This may bring potential consequences
for their exploiting opportunies. Implications for academics and managers are discussed. 相似文献
