Do all institutions benefit from leadership training? Challenging tradition through systems inquiry

There is a fascination in the business community with leadership. There is an endless stream of training and development programs on how to become effective leaders to the extent that leadership training is now a big business. But the fascination is not restricted to the business community. People are enthralled by the idea of leadership, search for more information on it, and truly believe that by becoming a leader, they can reach a more desirable future. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that all organizations do not benefit universally from their investment in employees' leadership training. After reviewing the leadership literature and systems concepts, it is recommended that the redesign of an organization in a social systemic framework will lead to optimization of benefit from leadership training.     

A dynamic multi-commodity model of the agricultural sector: A regional application in Brazil

This paper develops a dynamic model to analyze the development process in the agricultural sector. Formulated as a recursive linear programming model, it contains several commodities as outputs, farm and regional resource constraints on owned and purchased inputs-including working capital-and several farm sizes. The objective function is assumed to be separable for each farm size and additive for the region and measures for each year the net expected revenues from crop and livestock production less an investment charge. Prices are exogenous. The model is applied to a rapidly developing agricultural region in Southern Brazil and tested for its ability to trace regional farm sector development over a decade. It is then used to analyze the impact of alternative agricultural policies including price and credit subsidies.     

Blogging: A new play in your marketing game plan

The emergence, proliferation, and ubiquity of the Internet have not only transformed businesses, but also altered the relationship between businesses and the customer. Recent advances in technology have helped to migrate this relationship to an interactive level where technology contributes to brand building by creating and sustaining a long-term relationship with the customer. Media fragmentation and customer indifference to traditional marketing tools are forcing marketers to seek new opportunities so the marketing message not only captures customers’ attention, but also tries to engage them with the company. This paper discusses blogs within the context of creating this new, more enduring relationship with the customer. Blogs are discussed within the framework of Web 2.0, the next generation of the Internet, which is comprised of user-generated content and social computing. The use of blogs by several companies as tools to better engage the customer in the creation, delivery, and dissemination of marketing messages is also demonstrated.
