Belbin's Team Role Model: Development,Validity and Applications for Team Building*

abstract This paper brings together research into and using the team role model developed by Belbin (1981, 1993a ) in an attempt to provide an exhaustive assessment of construct validity in light of the conflicting evidence so far produced. Role theory is used to contextualize the origins of the model. The psychometric properties of the Team Role Self‐Perception Inventory used to assess a person's likely behaviour in a team are examined along with 43 empirical studies that have tested theoretical associations between team roles and other cognitive or behavioural traits. While the evidence is mixed, we conclude that, on balance, the model and its accompanying Inventory have adequate convergent validity. However, strong associations between some team roles are observed, indicating weak discriminant validity among some scales in the Inventory. Through its coverage of important areas of teamworking, the paper contributes to the practitioner and research communities by providing fresh insights into aspects of teamworking and by suggesting new research agendas.     

Urban Industrial Land Redevelopment and Contamination Risk

This study examines the role of contamination risk on urban industrial redevelopment in the City of Chicago. The theoretical framework is the myopic optimal redevelopment rule which states that the redevelopment of an urban parcel will occur when the parcel's value through conversion to a new use, net of construction costs, exceeds the value of the same parcel continuing in its current use. Contamination liability is modeled as a land demolition cost that is capitalized into bid value. Assuming that the magnitude of this land demolition cost is a function of the a priori probability of contamination, the effects of contamination risk on land value and on the probability of redevelopment are estimated.     

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO PRIVATISE ROYAL MAIL

In classical myth Cerberus was the three-headed dog that guarded the entrance to hell. The Royal Mail Group ('RMG'), as the holding company is currently called, is a three-headed dog that should be put down. This paper examines the problems underlying RMG's three businesses - letters, parcels and counters - and suggests that if Cerberus were privatised as three ordinary dogs and the holding company abolished, they would have much better prospects of profitable survival.

本文结合主要国家实践,分析了一国住房贷款二级市场的驱动因素、成功要素及其主要的经济金融功能;在总结次贷危机带来的市场发展启示的基础上,探讨了未来房贷二级市场的主流模式。鉴于房贷二级市场对中国经济金融长期稳定发展具有一定的重要意义,文章进一步探讨了我国建立证券化房贷二级市场的模式选择与发展对策。     

The Postal Services Act 2000: competition is coming

In The Postal Service: Competition or Monopoly (IEA, 1970), I argued that the Post Office's monopoly of the letter should be removed. Thirty years later, an Act has been passed setting up a regulatory body with powers to do just that. PostComm will need to ensure the continuation of the universal postal service. To avoid market distortions, the Post Office will need to keep separate accounts for its services and to eliminate its historical internal cross-subsidies. All operators, including the Post Office, with licences to provide postal services may be required to take account of the needs of the disabled, and other disadvantaged groups. The counters network may be subsidised by the DTI. It now remains to be seen whether PostComm has the will and the muscle to open up the postal market to effective competition.
